If anything in TCM worked and wasn't risky, what would stop big pharma putting it in a pill or lotion?

Alternative medicine that works becomes medicine.

primax··on FDA says marijuana has a legitimate medicinal purpose
This hopefully is the precursor the DEA needs (plus a political push) to reschedule cannabis.

primax··on Ask HN: How many of you are self employed?
That sounds like a fantastic business. Are you hiring more fractional CTOs? I'd love to check you guys out and apply.
primax··on Ask HN: How many of you are self employed?
I am at the moment due to being in a bit of an odd situation.

I've been hit by layoffs in tech twice in the past 2 years. Once due to the consultancy I was working in selling, and all non-billable roles being terminated as a part of the sale. Then I joined a mid-sized startup as a head of engineering, and it turned out their remote work policies were bogus and they wanted me in the office all the time, and so they ended my probation.

So I'm a bit disillusioned with the hiring process in tech right now, so I'm working on two things:

1. Building market pricing intelligence software (basically manual scraping and data engineering, but I have plans to make it more sophisticated) to track prices of products in the market. I've got a couple of profitable no-risk ways to use this data, and it's started off nicely. And I think one day the tool will be worth a lot.

2. Working in my wife's gourmet packaged food business. It makes good money, and a large part of the business is waiting around for dehydrators or ovens to do their thing... so it means I have time to work on code while bringing in steady money.

I'm going to check out the fractional work/moonlighting job sites someone else posted as it might be a better way to more effectively make money to support my family while I build, but then again it's pretty satisfying working with my hands making food.

primax··on A practical guide to quitting your smartphone
I find disabling all notification sounds and vibrations, with the exception of the phone ringer does the job for me.

I'd like to get rid of the smartphone entirely, but it's a great podcast and audiobook delivery device.

primax··on DIY MBA: My Reading List (2019)
I was surprised when I did my MBA how they didn't cover anything to do with entrepreneurship... but then again it is a masters of business administration.

This is an alright list of books, but as other posters have said anyone following it will sorely miss out on practice experience.

And service working as a hospitality worker.

No one would ever be rude to servers again.

primax··on Unbricking my MacBook took an email to Tim Cook
I've long wanted something like this for addresses or contact details.

You register your address somewhere, and give access to it to companies by signing their certificate. When you update your contact details, you do so in one place and it sends a notification to each organisation to update their details.

It'd be better as well if you could revoke your permission with that company so they can't contact you.

primax··on VW is putting buttons back in cars
I'd disagree, because a button for everything means a button for every function. This very quickly becomes cluttered, which is the opposite of minimalist.
primax··on Inside The Chaos at OpenAI
Personally for me I've found that since Google search has been wrecked by SEO, or pivoted to targetting zoomers and gen alpha, it just doesn't work the same for me in my 40s. It used to be fantastic, but several times a day my search queries end in frustration like they did in the pre-Webcrawler search era.

Increasingly now I use ChatGPT and sometimes Kagi. And they just work like I expect. I can think of one time that ChatGPT has failed me, which was when I was trying to remember the terms OLTP/OLAP in database architecture. But for a long time now it's been a very effective tool in my toolbox, while Google increasingly wears out.

primax··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
This was pre-1983. Forking wasn't a thing at the time. Any kind of code management was cutting edge, and cross-platform shared code wasn't even dreamed of yet.
primax··on After Boeing declines to pay up, ransomware group leaks 45 GB of data
Sure, but that was leaked in 2004. A very different time for email, and where attachments were generally smaller.
primax··on Starship will attempt a launch this Friday
Agreed. And honestly, not having to worry that my kids will be shot in school is a big psychological comfort
primax··on Scientists discover why dozens of endangered elephants died

primax··on Amazon's Fallout TV series gets a 2024 release date

primax··on Brave layoffs
I would have thought a browser's users were sticky enough to not be effected by the economic environment. Or at least as much as most businesses.

I suppose their advertising revenues could be impacted.

To say that you must have no idea how cheap helicopter flight is now, and how expensive lab equipment of that caliber is.

Please pop several pegs forward or back on the Dunning Kruger chart please.

primax··on Mystery 'golden egg' found on ocean floor
Having sequencing equipment on ship is undesireable.

There are practically no scenarios where the effort of making such equipment seaworthy is worth doing, compared to putting samples on ice and waiting until back in port to test.

If something was absolutely urgent it could be transferred to a helicopter. But I can't imagine any scenario that this ship would need that for.

primax··on Ask HN: Those with ADHD. What's a hobby that never gets boring?
I would second this. Currently I'm off working on my bread making and cheese making skills.

The (obvious) good thing about this hobby is it makes you a great cook! That shouldn't be underestimated as it's a key life skill

primax··on Google preemptively banned hundreds of millions of 'pirate' URLs last year
Because there are a large cohort of Googlers and Xooglers here who are resolutely in denial that their golden goose is not dying, and they insist it is in fact fine. Whereas nearly any knowledge worker using Google daily for the past decade can attest to it's rapid decline in quality.
primax··on My Caste
You're right, yours is a very shallow argument.

Unless you can reveal anything about the inner workings of the tenure board, you are taking your impression of a broad organisation and applying it to a specific department, a management structure and a board for which you are ignorant.

Please don't make sweeping generalisations and minimise the position of the author unless you have actual knowledge that might let you walk in his shoes.

primax··on Record low sea ice led to catastrophic breeding failure of emperor penguins

primax··on Record low sea ice led to catastrophic breeding failure of emperor penguins
> The crucial thing for me to remember is that it wasn't my fault. I can do whatever I want because 100 companies are responsible for 71% of GHG. It is their fault and their shareholders' fault and my behaviour has no effect.

Those companies make things that you buy. If you didn't buy them, they wouldn't make them.

Ultimately all of this can be drawn back to the consumption of the individual.
