erik_landerholm··on She’s Got Game
yeah, it is. I get that they have oil, that doesn't explain the fascination. I could see an attitude of necessary evil, but a lot of americans think the saudis are some kind of beacon in the middle east.
erik_landerholm··on China Built a Vast New Infrastructure to Imprison Uighurs
I’d take it further. If you do business in/with China right now you would of done business with nazi Germany.
erik_landerholm··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
Planned breaks. Plan to watch a movie or do something at a specific time for a specific duration.

Exercise of any kind will do it, but you need to Do It for at least 30 mins, imo. It takes a while for your brain to context switch completely.

erik_landerholm··on Oatly: The New Coke?
12 ozs in your coffee...ohhhkay. What a dumb article.
erik_landerholm··on ITER: World's largest nuclear fusion project begins assembly
From Here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1p6jrlbUOuuOCHnhR9fcsvnQJl4d...

"Most of the power (~100 MW on ITER) released in SOL flows in an extremely narrow channel ~1 mm"

wow

erik_landerholm··on Pentagon's UFO Unit to Disclose Some of Its Findings to the Public
define often? You would have to know how often they visit to say they crash often. What if they have been operating here for thousands of years and we have a crash or two. Would that be often?

Stealth? How do you know anything we have can track them very well? What if they have to let us track them, or there are certain operating modes where they are susceptible to radar and other times they are totally invisible.

Making any conclusions about why they would not be tracked or wouldn't is pure speculation and worse based on our own capabilities. 'Stealth' from radar might be incredibly easy for them.

erik_landerholm··on Pentagon's UFO Unit to Disclose Some of Its Findings to the Public
> The actual footage and pilot accounts are consistent with submarine launched weather balloons, halo artifacts on IRST systems, and similar banal explanations.

This is totally incorrect. There is nothing balloon like or halo artifact like about the tic-tac and Fravor's description. It's just not true.

I agree that many of the people around the ufo phenomenon are cranks and liars, but that doesn't mean everyone is or that all sightings and eye witness testimony are fake or lies or misunderstandings.

What fravor and people on the nimitz described is nothing like what you lumped everything under, it's just not. If you want to call them all liars too, that's fine, but if not, what they described, the eyewitness accounts are not what you described.

erik_landerholm··on Launch HN: Reploy (YC S20) – Instant fullstack staging environments for web apps
I’m a co-founder of Release. We can create/manage all envs from static builds with a single backend to production of very complicated apps.

But, we started with the idea of Review apps for more complicated apps than heroku can do.

There are many companies trying to solve this problem in various ways, or smaller parts of it, which is good, validated the space.

erik_landerholm··on Y Combinator has lost its soul: A YC founder's perspective
As someone who did yc in s09 and w19, it was very different. But, you get out what you put in, like most things. These generalized critiques are useless. B2b is thriving at yc because it’s easier and more in the wheelhouse of developers. If there were tech climbers there I didn’t meet them. There are so many people the useless are easy to avoid. We got 6 months of work done in 3 months and the bigger check vs 09 was very helpful.
erik_landerholm··on We Don't Hate PHP
The part on database access is not a plus for php. Writing sql like that is horrible, especially when it's simple. I'm in a huge refactor right now, where i'm utilizing postgres schemas and doing it with php, like in the article would be absolutely horrible.
erik_landerholm··on Cryo-electron microscopy breaks a key barrier
Dumb question, but if electrons are basically point particles, why is hard to get below 1 angstrom resolution?
erik_landerholm··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2020)
We are! Only one role right now : https://releaseapp.io/company

erik_landerholm··on Across furtive videocons, junior VCs wait for the layoffs to begin
This article reads like a bad gossip rag but instead of being about failing celeb marriages it’s less interesting.
erik_landerholm··on NBA suspends season over the coronavirus after player tests positive
The cure is worse than the disease.
erik_landerholm··on Please stop recommending Gitflow
We implemented Gitflow almost exactly how it was described in the original blog post a while ago. It was simple and we built continuous deployment around it and it posed 0 challenges in that department. It was much harder to change culture and build a process and systems to actually do the continuous deployment than Gitflow ever caused. I disagree with about everything in this article.
erik_landerholm··on Launch HN: Release (YC W20) – Staging environments made easy
It’s good that multiple companies are trying to solve the problem, as it’s a big problem. I’ve not used Dockup, but from reading the docs and from other feedback I’ve heard, their solution seems like a more involved process to get running. And I think you pointed that out in your comment.

From our basic understanding of Dockup that primarily is a result of reading their documentation, it appears that the customer has to do a lot of the DevOps/AWS/Kubernetes work on their own to get things going. A big point of differentiation for us is we’re trying to automate as much of that as possible and make it accessible to developers without having to get DevOps involved (or get them involved as little as possible).

We have a solution for database and seed data that we are currently testing with customers. As far as auth'ing with 3rd parties we’ve had to solve this problem for ourselves (our integrations with Github/Bitbucket present this issue with ephemeral environments) and our approach is to take those learnings and create simple generic solutions for them. Right now we would solve that with any customer as part of our onboarding.

I’m not quite sure what challenges you had with subdomains while using Dockup. We auto-create subdomains for all your staging environments including managing dns, either in our cloud or in your AWS account. We have some documentation on how you design your architecture/app for staging environments here: https://docs.releaseapp.io/multiple-environments.

Dealing with subdomains ends up being part design issue (not hardcoding IP/host names, etc) and part using a system that can handle all the complexities around dns, and networking of your services.

We don’t have time limits on the environments. We will be adding administrative settings to allow customers to control the life-cycle of their staging environments. At this moment, they can be created manually or through a pull request. If they are created through a pull request, they are automatically removed when the pull request is merged or removed. But, this is how Release works at the moment based on customer feedback and can be adapted to your use case.

We have worked on this problem all through our careers. We are encouraged by all the companies trying to solve this issue. We feel our approach is unique in its simplicity for the end-user, but we are aware of the complexities inherent in generalizing an approach for other people. It’s hard.

I really appreciate your feedback and would love a chance to show you what we are doing and hopefully we are different and useful enough for a system as complex as yours. If you want please reach out at founders @ releaseapp .io

erik_landerholm··on Federal safety official slams Tesla, regulators for misuse of its Autopilot tech
My friend has one and uses the auto-pilot responsibly, works very well. Until someone shows me concrete evidence that autopilot is responsible for an inordinate amount of accidents at a rate higher than normal human driving,...this seems like a huge waste of time and fear mongering.
erik_landerholm··on More bosses give four-day workweek a try
Do you actually like your job? I don't mean any disrespect, but I've had jobs I don't really like and I get where you are coming from. Right now, though and at other times, since I've had my own companies, 6 day work weeks and 10-12 hrs a day was not even an issue. I feel like if people go to 4 day work weeks, people that love their jobs and are willing to work 1.5times as much or more will have a huge advantage over the long haul.
erik_landerholm··on Launch HN: API Tracker (YC W20) – Track and manage the APIs you use
Two of the last companies I'd ever want to work with or rely on, other than that...
erik_landerholm··on Event-Driven Architecture
I couldn't agree more. It's like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
erik_landerholm··on New books mount aggressive but ultimately unpersuasive defenses of multiverses
The large hadron collider hasn’t seen any evidence that SUSY is right. We have been stuck trying to develop a theory of quantum gravity for a long time. We are making a lot of progress in emergent fields, biology especially, but the fundamental fields have stalled on the biggest questions, imo.
erik_landerholm··on ‘Evil Corp,’ a $100M Cybercrime Menace
omg..this part: "Here’s where it got interesting. Each of these mule recruitment sites had the same security weakness: Anyone could register, and after logging in any user could view messages sent to and from all other users simply by changing a number in the browser’s address bar. As a result, it was trivial to automate the retrieval of messages sent to every money mule registered across dozens of these fake company sites."

Amazing....

And the picture of the Russian tool in question, with his cat and his clothes. Could he be anymore more stereotypical Russian Goon looking?! He looks like the evil character in an Austin Power's movie...

erik_landerholm··on “Snowcrash” to be HBO series, compete with actual early Metaverses for viewers
I hope it doesn't suck. It seems like every few years a network tries to make a sci-fi series, it bombs and then it's years before anyone tries again. I would love to see Revelation Space (by Alastair Reynolds) get the budget of the mandalorian or huge big screen budget, but alas, that will never happen.
erik_landerholm··on GC Fun at Twitch
If the ballast works and they can "afford" it within whatever parameters they are using to define "afford", I'm all for that method.
erik_landerholm··on Narcissistic CEOs weaken collaboration and integrity
Hmmm...my experience is very different. A lot of seemingly normal people are just fine, if not happy to be led by psychopaths and narcissists. They view their "confidence" as a plus because they don't dig deeply or are just scared, wimps and like a big strong "asshole" to lead them. I honestly blame the rise of asshole CEO's and leaders on the normies, who don't want to be be held accountable.
erik_landerholm··on It’s Not Enough to Be Right – You Also Have to Be Kind
correct. my vegan in-laws, have been vegan for 40 years now and they are in very good condition for their age. Saying it's "unhealthy" with no nuance is a ridiculous statement. It is in a no-way a fact. People that speak like this give people that speak in facts a bad name.
erik_landerholm··on [dead]
Ridiculous

erik_landerholm··on 'Not One Drop of Blood': Cattle Mysteriously Mutilated in Oregon
And cleaned the blood off the ground?!? Doesn’t seem reasonable someone took them somewhere else killed them and brought them back, but if not where’s the blood?
erik_landerholm··on Tom Delonge’s UFO Research Center Is Making Politicians Demand Answers
Exactly. I understand skepticism when it comes to ufos, I’m of the belief most of the reports are nonsense and/or the ramblings of the mentally ill, attention seeking, etc. but, I feel like people should at least have read or listened to the pilots to have an opinion on this one.
