zacharyz··on Tech job relocation market is recovering. The competition is growing faster
I don't disagree. My observation of at least one major large company is that rather than rely on h1bs they are instead building out offices in other countries and dramatically increasing hiring there. I doubt they are the only company doing that, but I don't see anyone talking about it.
zacharyz··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
The justices seem to have argued that eliminating a platform for speech does not inhibit your ability to voice that speech on another platform, so is not a violation of the first amendment. I think this is an important outcome and really goes against what many so called "free speech absolutists" would argue.
zacharyz··on Reading on smartphone affects sigh generation, brain activity, and comprehension
I have been doing a lot of kindle reading lately and have noticed that I sleep easier when I transition to the actual e-ink device versus reading on my phone. I suspect it is due to the backlight (blue light, which has been shown to effect sleep and intensity).
zacharyz··on Comma.ai, self-driving cars and indefinite optimism
Still one of my favorite raps of all time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iUvuaChDEg&ab_channel=geoho...
zacharyz··on DoorDash from Application to IPO
They did something similar to where I live. When I found out just how much of the cost goes to them rather than the business I stopped using them. It is better to support local businesses by just ordering pick up and and tipping them directly.
zacharyz··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
What makes it flawed? It is a legit strategy that occasionally works at the pro level.
zacharyz··on Deeplearning.ai: Announcing New Deep Learning Courses on Coursera
That unfortunately doesn't apply to all their NDs. Some of their newer ones (like the self driving car ND) doesn't offer any sort of tuition back.
zacharyz··on Acme Klein Bottle
Or read some of his books like The Cuckoo's Egg. He was honestly one of the reasons why I got into computers as a kid.
zacharyz··on 4-Day Fast
Yep - in the intermittent fasting community, BCAAs (which the author was probably taking) are known to kick you out of the fasting state.
zacharyz··on Pebble CEO explains why he sold to Fitbit
You can get by with wearing an apple watch while you sleep. It charges mostly to full in about the time it takes for a morning shower.
zacharyz··on Unity raises $181M round at a reported $1.5B valuation
For what its worth, Unity is a pretty global company. They have marketing based in SF but also have an office out of Bellevue. The majority of development though is still based out of Copenhagen and other European companies.
zacharyz··on CurrentC Ends Beta Tests, Will Deactivate Accounts
I have no problem using it every where NFC POS terminals are here in Portland. If more places that use square had NFC reader I would be using apple pay well over 80% of the time.
zacharyz··on How Old Do I Look?
Just going by the test images it seems to rate everything about 5 years younger than what I would guess (people and their kids, kids being the same age and obviously not twins).

With that said, it guessed my age nearly spot on. When I get carded most people think I am far younger.

zacharyz··on Graph of Foursquare's Popularity After Removing Check-Ins
I think you are confusing the initial statement. Foursquare perceived users as "frustrated" before Swarm because of the conflation of reviews and check-ins with in a single app. The pivot was to create a new app and separate the concerns.
zacharyz··on What D3.js is Not
D3.js may not itself be a charting library but there are numerous adaptions that make it easy to work with - especially with angular: http://code.shutterstock.com/rickshaw/ http://nvd3.org/
zacharyz··on The Truth About Google X: A Look Behind The Secretive Lab's Closed Doors
It is a bit annoying. Arthur C Clark suggested using nano tubes in a space elevator over 20 years ago - so what exactly did google x bring to the discussion?
zacharyz··on Facebook acquires Oculus VR
This was more a recent development and not covered in MoD and is the reason he left id. He wanted id to focus on VR but he couldn't get bethesada to buy in to the idea.
zacharyz··on Apple CarPlay
You don't even need to look that far back. Cars being released as new today have horrible speech recognition compared to what you can get with siri/google now.
zacharyz··on Introducing Paper
It looks beautiful - which is what I have come to expect from the designers over there at facebook. I love how Mike and Sharon's trips are used in their marketing materials, it is a nice personal touch.

The facebook timeline is starting to feel extremely stale - if facebook can make it so its users can tell better stories then I am all for it.

zacharyz··on Amazon Drones - 60 Minutes [video]
I never saw that '99 special on Bezos. I was surprised to see how cheerful he was at the time. He always seems so stern and serious these days - a man to be feared and respected rather than mocked for being playful.
zacharyz··on Google BBS Terminal
They just hit the limit: ERROR: Quota Exceeded. Please see http://code.google.com/apis/websearch
zacharyz··on Moot 1.0 launches with embeddable forums and commenting without iframes
I thought he was involved as well (considering the name) which made the manifesto claim about reducing "memes, funny pictures, viral videos" funny considering that moot builds products that are just the opposite of that.
zacharyz··on Quitting LinkedIn
It looks good! I am not a huge fan of the name though.
zacharyz··on The Real Silicon Valley
From his site it sounds like he was a designer working on picplz and app.net. My guess is the competitor he was talking about was instagram.
zacharyz··on Bill Thurston has died
Outside In, the movie referenced in the article, can be found on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeYo7MHuj0g
zacharyz··on Resume.io - Crazy-simple online resumes with impression tracking.
I was hoping it would act as a linkedin importer with impression tracking. The thing I like about linkedin is that I keep that information updated anyway and if anyone needs to pull a resume they can do so from my profile. This, while nice, is more work - which makes it not all that useful.
zacharyz··on Apple’s iOS 5 Update Now Available For iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch
This makes me wonder how the majority of the people are even going to use it if it isn't immediately obvious how to activate it. I used this gigaom article to setup it up on my 3gs: http://gigaom.com/apple/ios-5-imessage/

It works pretty well and I can't wait for the mac version.

zacharyz··on Pinterest raises $27 million in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz
"The start-up, which has no revenue to speak of yet"

This is the aspect of the site that always made me scratch my head and say "huh?"

It is no doubt a well designed site that engages women. Despite being in beta and invite only I know a bunch of women who are really into it. I don't think being engaging is enough though - where do they go from here? How do they actually justify the valuation? Are they going to have "paid" posts for advertising? Are they going to some how sell the data mined from their users? Paid accounts?

This site seems like it is going to be even harder to monetize than reddit.

zacharyz··on Notifo (YC W10) Will be Shutting Down
Ahh all good reasons, I figured they were still chugging along with Leah still being involved.
zacharyz··on Notifo (YC W10) Will be Shutting Down
What indication is there that Convore isn't doing well? What is the measure for success for it?
