vanilla-almond··on EU Commission Regulation on green tea extracts in food supplements (2022)
EU Commission Regulation extracts (UK to follow EU regulation)

> "The mean daily intake of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate resulting from the consumption of green tea infusions ranges from 90 to 300 mg/day."

> "The Authority also concluded that, based on the available data on the potential adverse effects of green tea catechins on the liver, there is evidence from interventional clinical trials that intake of doses equal to or above 800 mg of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate per day in the form of a food supplement, has been shown to induce a statistically significant increase of serum transaminases in treated subjects compared to control subjects, which is indicative of liver injury."

vanilla-almond··on Miyazaki Hayao's final film 'The Boy and the Heron,' sets North America release
From article:

> The highly-anticipated film released in Japanese theaters earlier on Friday as “Kimitachi wa Do Ikiruka” (“How Do You Live”). In an unprecedented decision by producer Studio Ghibli no images, trailers, synopses, advertisements, or other information about the film have been made available to the public prior to its Japanese theatrical outing.

> “How Do You Live” has been the movie’s informal English title throughout its production phase, but Gkids says that “The Boy and the Heron” is now the official international title. In keeping with Ghibli’s Japan omerta, Gkids says it will not release any further details or marketing materials at the moment.

vanilla-almond··on What do you think about the next-gen bookmarking tool?
I like some of the bookmarking ideas you highlighted. Both and Chrome and Firefox bookmarks seem completely neglected.

Interestingly, Microsoft’s Edge browser have a feature called 'collections'. A souped-up bookmarking feature: visual links, images, notes. Also, Edge lets you edit and annotate PDFs. (Chrome and Firefox display read-only PDFs).

This random YouTube video makes a case for Edge 'collections' and PDF features: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fjwNMyHWCY&t=152s

vanilla-almond··on Fake sugars sneak into foods and disrupt metabolic health
The Washington Post article say: "Two sweeteners in particular, saccharin and stevia, worsened the participants’ blood sugar control"

But the research paper from Cell says "Sucralose and saccharin supplementation impairs glycemic response in healthy adults." Stevia in the research paper is not stated as "impairs glycemic response". [1]

Is the Washington Post article correct about the research paper findings?

vanilla-almond··on An overview of single-purpose Linux distributions
Is there a minimal or custom Linux image suitable for the following scenario? A custom Linux + web app combination:

- a Linux image that can upload to a VPS

- a Linux image including your web app and essential tools (web server, database)

- anything not needed from the Linux image is removed (tools, utilities)

The idea is that a custom Linux image (which includes your pre-installed web app) can be installed to any VPS: pre-configured to be Linux only for your web app. (Note: this a scenario without docker.)

vanilla-almond··on The price of ‘sugar free’: are sweeteners as harmless as we thought?
This was a frustrating read. The article freely used the term "sweeteners" but without making the distinction between artificial sweeteners (saccharin, aspartame) and natural-derived sweeteners (stevia, xylitol). Later in the article, the term "artificial sweeteners" imply that all sweeteners are problematic (including natural-derived sweeteners).

There are more natural-derived sweeteners now available, although they may be heavily processed. Examples of natural-derived sweeteners: stevia, xylitol, inulin, erythritol, monk fruit extract.

The following paragraph from the article is sloppy:

> "A couple of studies suggested that daily use of a sweetener called stevia could reduce a child’s risk of getting tooth decay, but in another study, children who consumed more than 250ml of artificially sweetened drinks a day were even more likely to suffer from toothache than those who drank sugary soft drinks or energy drinks, even after adjusting for levels of tooth brushing and economic privilege."

The linked study (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdfdirect/10.1111/1753-6...) does not mention stevia at all. The linked study refers to "sugar-sweetened beverages". But misleadingly the article author start with stevia (a natural-derived sweetener) then switches to the term "artificially sweetened" and links to the study. The reader is left the implication is that all sweeteners cause toothache.

vanilla-almond··on BBC documentary used face-swapping AI to hide protesters' identities
...so my b.s detector is in the red on this one

Why? A 2020 documentary called Welcome to Chechnya looked at repression of LGBT Chechens and was the first documentary to use "advanced facial replacement techniques using artificial intelligence and novel visual effects technology so the viewer could see real faces displaying real emotions while still protecting the identities of the speakers" [1]

The documentary was released by HBO Films. The BBC also broadcast the documentary.

vanilla-almond··on Roald Dahl's writing shed (1982) [video]
Some quotes from Dahl from the interview:

The discipline of writing:

"Your concentration is fairly intense. You're lost into this world of the story that you happen to be doing - it's terrifically demanding you know. What do I write four, four-and-a-half hours a day - so a quarter of my waking hours I am completely immersed in a dotty world of fantasy."

Writing for children vs adults:

"To my mind, there's no question that to write a children's book of comparable quality to a fine adult novel or story is more difficult - it's much more difficult to achieve the children's book."

Shopify announced staff layoffs in July 2022. The Shopify CEO expressed the same sentiment repeated later by Stripe and Facebook:

"...given what we saw, we placed another bet: We bet that the channel mix - the share of dollars that travel through ecommerce rather than physical retail - would permanently leap ahead by 5 or even 10 years."

"It’s now clear that bet didn’t pay off. What we see now is the mix reverting to roughly where pre-Covid data would have suggested it should be at this point."

vanilla-almond··on Ask HN: Do you live close to your family?
I live about 30 minutes away (by car) from my parents and see them often. We all live in the same city.

When I started working from home during the pandemic I contemplated a move away to a different, more distant location. But I have stayed put because my parents are frail and not in the best of health. So being close nearby to my parents is important to me.

vanilla-almond··on Microbiome-driven effects of non-nutritive sweeteners on human glucose tolerance
Yes, I have replaced sugar completely with stevia. I have tried different stevia brands and found them fairly similar - they are a mixture of stevia blends with erythritol.

I found one stevia brand with a 1:8 ratio (1g of stevia = 8g of Sugar i.e. 1:8 ratio). Found that too sweet for me and had a bitter aftertaste. I usually buy stevia with a 1:2 ratio (i.e. 1g of stevia = 2g of Sugar).

I use stevia in tea and coffee. Have also used stevia successfully to make cakes, cookies, and ice cream.
