serpix··on Cheap, green hydrogen would be a breakthrough in clean energy
And that is why heating with gas needs to die a quick death.
serpix··on Parents’ trauma leaves biological traces in children
Ignorance is precisely what keeps the trauma train rolling.

What Valakas said. Also learn about the autonomous nervous system, fight, flight, freeze, befriend. The amygdala has role in decision making. Learn about slow and fast thinking.

The best advice is therapy. Internal family systems is said to be by far the most effective and there are others similar.

serpix··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
Given a COP of 5 for a ground source heat pump you can calculate 60/24 is 2,5kW power draw around the clock. Multiply by 5 give 12,5kW heat non stop. That is a lot of heat.

2000 sqft is 185m2 which is a mansion by my standards though :)

serpix··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
A air-water heatpump for heating that shower water would pay itself back in a few months. Solar panels would get the rest. Water is probably your biggest energy sink.
serpix··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
Something is off here, even if both your cars use about 40kWh per day, every day (which is humongous) that would still leave an absolutely staggering 60kWh/day. That would be the same as heating with electric alone a house in the Nordic Lapland during winter.
serpix··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
I measured a groundsource heatpump to consume about 30-50 kWh per day in -20c for hot water and heating a 100m2 house. About 22c indoors in a 70s somewhat poorly insulated 1-story brick/stone house. A good 1/3 of that energy goes to hot water. In houses where hot water is heated with electricity the ratio might be even worse.
serpix··on Finland will seek NATO membership immediately
As a Finnish citizen, reservist this has been a very emotional spring. Both of my grandfathers were in the war with Russia. Both of my grandmothers had to leave and burn their homes in the areas annexed by Russia. Twice. I am 100% for Nato.
serpix··on Two-minute battery changes push India’s delivery riders to switch to e-scooters
Recent road trips show that the weakest link are humans which have to take a longer rest period than the car needs to recharge.
serpix··on Ask HN: Do you ever service your vehicle?
Lease a smaller battery EV. I would definitely do this in the states / Canada as the lease prices are dirt cheap.
serpix··on Last Day of IKEA in Moscow
Supplication to a tyrant worked only to incite unprovoked invasion and war crimes. The west believed that integrating Russia through economy and trade would bring us together. It only revealed Russia is not yet ready and still believes everybody is out to get them like some traumatised recluse. Enough is enough, the west has awoken to the sad reality that Russia has not changed.

Also the Baltic sovereign nations remember very very very well what it was like under Russian oppression. They are not going back to that.

Finnish people remember burning their homes ahead of the advancing tank armies. We remember both wars and many of us have the memories in our blood.

serpix··on What’s so hard about understanding consciousness?
if you did not have full conscious awareness when regaining first sensations, then what was it that remembers this experience? I'm saying that there was full consciousness already present as you remember everything.
serpix··on Device wraps around hot surfaces, turns wasted heat to electricity
In the Caribbean you get unlimited free energy from the sun, considering that solar panels are very cheap you could just rig the system to dump all excess power to the water heater, but considering you already get unlimited solar power you could just place the water tank in the sun to heat water. If that is not enough a home made aluminum can heat pipe plus water pump or just a long black hose with a water pump would nearly boil your water during the day.
serpix··on Geothermal's path to relevance: cheap drilling
I had my borehole going straight down about ~150m deep from right next to the side of my house. I moved the lawn right next to the pipes.
serpix··on Geothermal's path to relevance: cheap drilling
that is a ground-source heat pump as the heat energy is mostly from ambient solar. But yes very common and I used to have one in my home before I moved away. It cost practically nothing to keep the house at t-shirt temperature during -25c cold weather snaps.
serpix··on Nearly 40% of adults from 25-54 are unpartnered [Pew Research]
A relationship and need for connection is a built in primal need we have. The western mindset is heavily placing monogamist relationships in the context of a win-lose game. A zero sum game. No relationship survives this, as the whole point of being with another human is emotional growth, security and healthy dependence from each other.

Teal Swan has a brilliant video on the zero sum game mindset.

serpix··on Norway to hit 100% electric vehicle sales by early next year
The cars and equipment themselves are also airlifted around the world. The whole entourage is a massive waste of resources.
serpix··on Sauna use as a lifestyle practice to extend healthspan
Snow shoveling is a strenuous exercise and gets the heart pumping fast. Temperature doesn't mean that much while doing hard workouts outside.

Last winter I was drenched in sweat while shoveling my yard and it was -15c outside. Only wore slim pants and long sleeve shirt.

serpix··on Gas Engines, and the People Behind Them, Are Cast Aside for Electric Vehicles
Prius and other Toyota hybrids actually burn gasoline going downhill. Try it. Put B and go downhill and observe the consumption, the engine is on and burning gas.
serpix··on LEVC unveils e-Camper range-extender electric camper
I'm planning a future where I retire in a pure electric mobile home. Charge in the sun and use syngas for cooking and boosted heating in the winter. Heat pump keeps the interior cool or warm.

I have no desire to maintain and pay for a static property which just rots in place and requires constant maintenance and upkeep.

A smaller mobile home I can easily just tinker around in and keep it tidy and running.

I have a permanent wanderlust and desire to explore.

serpix··on AWS Frankfurt incident
so, well over 140 Celsius then as there are saunas that are that hot and breathing in them is fine.
serpix··on Wolf packs don't have alpha males and alpha females
Just observe how any child is in relation to the parent.
serpix··on Six years of professional Clojure development
as both a Scala and Clojure polyglot I would pick Clojure over Scala every single time, the Clojure REPL development style alone puts Scala behind.

Scala and SBT is a nightmare, I don't want to touch it ever again.

With Clojure you are done before Intellij has even rebuilt your indexes /s.

serpix··on Association of sleep duration in middle and old age with incidence of dementia
My dad is like this. Please tell me as I am curious, do you tend to self-reflect or have a vivid inner world? I'm trying to understand how my dad does this and my current theory is that he simply does not dwell on things and runs mostly on instinct.
serpix··on Two days with Volkswagen’s electric ID.4
The only thing fossil cars have remaining is range and charging speed and I suspect is only a few years to go. Everything else is in another league.
serpix··on A 25-Year-Old Bet Comes Due: Has Tech Destroyed Society?
Absolute madness, you and your enemy will be dead anyway from the fallout and nuclear winter.
serpix··on React created roadblocks in our enterprise app
You just got steamrolled by .NET OOP dinosaurs, React played no part in it.
serpix··on Full success of first-ever cubesat mission equipped with Hall-effect propulsion
What does this even mean? DeltaV would have been much more understandable.
serpix··on Messengers of hope: two mRNA Covid-19 vaccines herald a new era for vaccinology
and possibly infect scores of other people, some of them not so lucky and will get the serious case requiring hospitalisation or worse.
serpix··on 1.7M premature deaths annually from air pollution in India
I concur. The pollution becomes evident at the airport, inside the hall you already see and smell the smog and you are still inside a building. Going outside you think you're in the middle of a wildfire.
