odshoifsdhfs··on The unreasonable effectiveness of one-on-ones
Why would anyone talk about their problemas at home with their bosses? Is this a US culture thing where work and non-work is blended so much that you mix and match conversations?

Both as a worker and a manager, I hardly know about other co-workers lives. Gay or not gay, married with kids, or eternal bachelor, I don't really have (or want) a clue about their private life, much less have a report tell me about his. Just say 'I am dealing with something, need some time off' and there, you got it, but I don't need to know your mother has cancer or you are going through a divorce. You are an adult, take the time and use it as you need.

odshoifsdhfs··on Windows 11 update changed default browser to Edge, Chrome search-engine to Bing
I am no fan of ms, but you make a good point. I usually use safari on my mac, and dl chrome for work (create a profile for each client, have gmail separated, etc). Never has google asked me to set the search engine and every time asked me to set chrome as default. It also does some ‘magic’ when i login to gmail and makes my session ‘identifiable’ to chrome.

I don’t use windows so am not a user, but can see how google uses chrome to make google the default and ms using windows to make bing the default (yes brwser vs os, but i would guess 90% of peope ha e no clue of the difference)

odshoifsdhfs··on Crypto leads to surge in online scams
Strange, I had something similar happening and they reverted/refunded me/did something (needed the police report first though).

In any case, sorry it happened to you.

odshoifsdhfs··on Crypto leads to surge in online scams
Did you try to work with your/estonia bank? Police can do something, but usually for small values is too much trouble, but with the police report, most banks are very accommodating (Estonia is in the EU and has to follow EU banking laws, so it isn't like the money went to some backwater, no law country)
odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: Where within Europe should we incorporate?
Not going over Poland, as they may have special laws, but in general in the EU, it is ok if you are a EU citizen and open a company in another country within EU. If outside the EU many (each?) countries have a 'list' of some countries they consider 'low tax' and you are forced to be taxed at home (basically, they tax you like you are a local company and have to supply all paperwork to your country of residence).

The problem is when you want to pay yourself from that company, where in general, you have to register with the tax offices in both countries (company country and your residence country and then you may be able to pay more taxes on your home country depending on many things).

Not a tax attorney or the likes, but my cousin is and deals with a lot of this as she works with some small seed funds and helps them incorporate in other countries.

odshoifsdhfs··on The Moderna vaccine can cause immune-mediated hepatitis
I am not against pushing vaccines. But if hiding/lying is the way they are doing, is it worth it? Will the public ever trust them again?

Let's say (as an experiment) we know that 10% of people will have life-long problems if they take the vaccine, BUT hiding this fact means that 90% of the population will probably take the vaccine and thus, 'saving' a lot of people. Is it ok to 'sacrifice' 10% for the remaining 90%? (I know the values are less, but the questions is, where we draw the line where we should 'hide' things or not). I still hope the side effects will go away, but after one month, this has serious implications in my life, and I feel betrayed for not being informed on the side effects correctly. And for sure, I will not have any other boosters, no matter what mandates or what else they will come up with, and right now, I am recommending others not to get the booster after my experience (maybe wrong, but my experience and suffering trumps any 'greater good' that may put my close friends/family at risk)

odshoifsdhfs··on The Moderna vaccine can cause immune-mediated hepatitis
> If downplaying side effects had an overall greater outcome, would it be unethical and "obviously wrong"?

Well, lets say that I will have the side effects for the rest of my life, or my kid (9y) will. So lying or hiding about the side effects is better for the big picture, and then fuck me/my kid? This is how you breed anti-vaxx and other people against goverment. 'We lied, but it was from your own good, sure, some suffered the consequenses of our lies, but hey, bars are open now, yay'

odshoifsdhfs··on The Moderna vaccine can cause immune-mediated hepatitis
Not the op, and didn't read the link, so no clue what it's validity.

BUT will say again, I am pro vaccines and vaccinated, but I still think the possible side effects are being downplayed in the media/state. I posted in another thread, but after one month, I am still having issues that are for sure linked to my booster shot. No-one told me about any of these possible side effects, but after suffering from them, and talking openly about it with many peopkle, I found others had exactly the same issues as I have after their shots (Pfizer if it helps anyone).

odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: How do you have fun without alcohol?
I wouldn't consider myself a full blown alchoholic, but have my issues with it. I never get really drunk, but enjoy daily drinks.

I honestly don't know what to tell you. Life is quite boring in general (work, home, prepare house work, cook, sleep, and if you are lucky you have a few hours for a hobby), and alcohol made the time go much faster. Meals are also more 'boring' without a nice glass of wine or beer to go with it.

The few times I was ok without drinking at all (as I am now), I basically focus on sports. That is probably the only thing I still find interesting and do fully sober. All my free time as I can, I use it to train, sometimes 3 hours, sometimes 6 hours a day.

TV, reading, woodworking even trying to code for fun always lead me to want to have a beer or wine with it, sports and competition doesn't.

No clue if it will help you, but try it and see.

odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: Nerds of HN, did you overcome loneliness?
a) stop calling yourself a nerd

b) your mind doesn't 'constantly revolve around tech and science.', you are just bad at other things and dismiss them or want to feel superior. Normal Relationships don't revolve around a single topic they agree on

c) if you are lonely, it isn't because you are a nerd (heck, being nerdy is even popular now), if because of your lack of social skills and do nothing to improve them

d) get the fuck out of the house and interact with people. Gym, bar, supermarket, sports league, hobby place, dog park, etc. Just because the person you meet doesn't have an opinion on linux vs mac vs windows, or if Pluto is or isn't a planet, doesn't mean they aren't interesting/know interesting topics. You are not special or better because you 'pursue' science

(sorry for the negative tone, but is needed, all the 'nerds' I see that are lonely are a result of putting science or correctness or tech as the highest thing in life, and being condescending to other's interests, which makes they not really relatable, and thus lonely)

odshoifsdhfs··on Stanford requires booster shots for all students
I'm vaxxed and had my booster:

1) I had my booster 2 weeks ago and still am having side effects. I had 2 days of feeling like shit and having my physical output at maybe 20%, slowly recovering but after 2 weeks still around 75% or so. Not sure if it will improve come the new competition season. Same issues were reported with teammates. (I play a sport competitively, 2 days before the vaccine I did a 4.5 hour hard intensive training day, was ok and recovered fine. Just yesterday I had a training match and after 1 hour or so was feeling the lack of strength and difficulty breathing). I am not high risk for covid related issues. Right now, the booster has been quite an issue for me, and if I don't go back to 100% soon, my next year tournaments/ranking is compromised.

2) My kid is at an age they are pushing for vaccine for his age group. His risk based on my country data is pretty much zero (4 severe cases, 3 had co-mobilities that a normal cold would get them in the hospital, and one apparent healthy kid had severe issues but recovered). Risks from the vaccine for this age group are bigger than covid for him. I am against vaccinating him. (mother isn't and he will be)

I am not anti-vaxx (I even got my booster) but if they told me I could be 2+ weeks at reduced physical capacity befora having the booster, I wouldn't have done it.

odshoifsdhfs··on Evergrande has defaulted on its debt, Fitch Ratings says

odshoifsdhfs··on The U.S. productivity slowdown: an economy-wide and industry-level analysis
Why do this?

Use that time to read or browse HN or something.

Lets say one hour meetings per day. This means 8-1 = 7 hours of real work. If you work the 8 hours + the meeting, if you ever have to go back to the office, either you will have to work 9 hours to produce the same as WFH (since now you have to sit on the meeting), or drop in productivity and get scolded by a manager (you are producing 12.5% less)

odshoifsdhfs··on Tracking Covid-19 variant B.1.1.529
I had to travel for work around europe. Some countries (norway for example) are very strict, I had border police/military (not sure what they were, but armed to the teeth) checking everything, and others, just seem like they dont care (I had a trip last week where to Denmark, and then back and I didn't show anyone at all my normal passport or covid passport. Just showed ticket and all was good).

So yeah, this shit will never end until countries that aren't dependent on tourism actually start to care about it.

odshoifsdhfs··on Individuals Matter
I got around this, specially around 'planning poker' when I got to be lead in these scenarios that forced you to do it. Whenever there is a discussing on how long something should take, whoever says the least amount, is tasked with the job. After 1-2 of these meetings, amazingly, all estimates started to come back quite higher than before.

I still believe that whoever takes the task, should be the one deciding how long it will take, and only after understanding the scope of the work. Planning poker is the most useless piece of shit I ever seen, and still, it is used all around by idiots. If I am asked to estimate something, I will always give the highest possible value and justify with "I don't know enough about it to estimate". If I am managing and I have a top down force pushing for this, I will always make sure that the stupid process is obvious how fucking broken it is.

You can probably buy something, and not even spend 30 years paying it. I am looking at an apartment right now for 169 that I think they will accept 150k. Assuming no downpayment (banks won't allow it but easier to do math), I could pay the same as rent and have it payed of in 15 years (about 900 a month).

But in general, no, housing market is out of reach even for the middle class and sometimes middle-upper class here (and other places in Europe). But that is what happens when money making machine goes brrrrrr, inflation goes to 5% and the likes, and the central banks still keep interest rates close to zero. Rich will get richer, and the poor, well, fuck them right? /s

odshoifsdhfs··on Portugal bans bosses texting staff after-hours
They are generally ok. They depend a bit on where you live, but not like in the US where the school funding comes from local taxes. If the school serves a lot of 'problematic' areas, there will be more issues/problems, but not because of lack of funding, just the kids that go there, but in general they are ok. A school in a high income area will get better results than one that serves people in the projects, but isn't due to the school/funding itself, but more about the type of students that are there. But overall, they are still good and I would have no issue with having my kid attending one (unfortunately, since the divorce, this has been a pain point between me and my ex, so easier to just keep him where he is)

Also, we have some national rankings of schools (both private and public) but don't get too hang up on that. My kid used to go to a very 'fancy', top ranked and expensive school before. Top of the ranks. Cost per month was over 700 euros. He was bullied there. Robbed of toys and things. His teacher couldn't get him to participate at all (he was identified as 'gifted' with an IQ of more than 130) or do anything in class. Talking with other parents, their kids had similar things happening (other kids stealing things). School tried to hide it until I threaten them with having the police involved (not exaggerating, I had 3 meetings with teacher and director person, and nothing was really done except vague promisses, on 4th time, I had meeting with my lawyer, I went to the meeting and said due to this and that, and the fact that what happening was crime A and B, and if it ever happened again, I would press charges both against the kid and the school (there is law where School is legally responsible if they are aware of this happening and do nothing). 10 minutes after leaving that meeting I had the school director/principal calling me to schedule an emergency meeting. After that meeting, it took me 2 weeks to move my son to another school.

He is now in a 'shittier' school, even has more 'problematic' kids, and there isn't a single issue, he loves it. He may not have fancy digital dry boards, and music lessons with some famous musician, but he is much happier kid. Just did his 'exams' and except for Portuguese (he hates it) scored almost max points in everything. Just because a school charges a lot and has all the 'fancy' things, doesn't mean it is the best for the kids

Ok, 3k will be more than enough. Will try to run the numbers below choosing high income options:

- 2 bedroom apartment in Matosinhos Sul (near the beach): 900/1000 euros (non 'fancy' places this will be around 500/600)

- Utilities (gas, electricity, water + internet/mobile/cable tv): 200

- Decent food for a family of four: 500

- Going out for dinner once a week with family: 150 euros

- Car: 600 (nice car lease, insurance + gas)

- Public transport for family: 100

Note all the prices are in the upper range. You can easily feed a family of 4 with much less or shopping around (we average 100 per person per month, but we still buy nice cuts of meat and the likes), just showing that it is well within the budget. Spreading out to non beach/not as close to porto places would reduce your rent almost by 50%. You can get a lease with insurance and maintenance included in the price for new a new Mazda 3 for 300 euros for example, leaving you with 100 on gas.

I bought my car upfront and I also own my apartment, so not the best example, but I still pay 300 euros of child support + private school for my kid (250) + other extras, and me and my gf (my kid stays with me 1/3 of the month only) don't spend over 1250 per month including those expenses.

odshoifsdhfs··on Portugal bans bosses texting staff after-hours
I'm portuguese, happy to help you there if you give more details. Where will you be living? Rent can range from 500/600 euros in the Porto Periphery to 1500+ in Center. Will kids go to private school (200/300 per month is common, but 'better' schools can go up to 800/1000 per month for the likes ofUBS, CLIP in Porto) or public school (free).

If you don't want to live a lavish lifestyle, I think 2000/2500 after taxes should be more than enough. Average Household income is around 1600 Euros (which is quite low tbh) but livable.

This will be huge.

There is a product I have been wanting to make, there is demand (customers have been asking for it), but would never work with the distributed personal iCloud accounts before. This will allow to consolidate all of it under businesses accounts.

Interesting enough, have other people in my circles that also have wanting to port somethings to be native like this and haven't due to being business apps and the 'individual accounts' being a show stopper to share licenses.

Worked on a product like spotify many years ago, just to chime in that jonorourke is right. I think we had 4 major deals with the labels (Universal, Sony, WB and one I can't remember), and then just a few deals with some smaller labels which to be honest, weren't really important for the userbase/revenue (sure you may want Beethoven's 5th played by the Czech Symphony on the London Hall, but 99.9999% of the users just wanted to listen to the stuff from the major 4)
odshoifsdhfs··on Workers in Portugal could see healthier work-life balance under new labour laws
Yeah, and now Sweden is/was considering limiting this as it considers Portugal a tax haven for their nationals. This (and previous) government can suck balls. They don't give a shit about the actual portuguese living here. High tax rates, shitty public services, but if they can attract any foreign money to look good, fuck the portuguese.

And don't get me started on how these foreigners that get tax exempt status drive up prices of everything here (ps: no problem with foreigners per se, just the ones that get special tax status). Had French and Italian people here literally tell me that what they save in taxes with these schemes basically pays for the house, so they don't mind paying more for the houses (I worked with some real estate companies)

I think this may depend a lot in which European country. UK is absolutely filled with self deprecating humour no matter your race or sex.

I am currently at an hotel with an international audience and was part of the daily 'show' a couple days ago. I made the entire audience laugh when I joked about not knowing how to sexually satisfy a woman (I am a white man if it helps).

Think it depends a lot on the general tone. Are women targeted for sexist jokes as much as men and the jokes are free for all? Probably ok. If 95% of the sexist jokes are about women, probably not ok.

But for example, I found that a lot of Eastern European men make sexists jokes that are mean and at the same time, can't take the smallest joke about themselves (or worse, their own sexuality).

Context and culture matters.

Well, maybe most people have finally seen through what a BS most of the VC/Start Ups are if you are an employee with shitty behaviour from founders/investors that you realize the best way to go through life is to do the same they do, just from the other side.

If you don't own a significant (5%+) chunk in a company, don't do a single minute of non-paid overwork. Do the bare minimum to justify not being fired (and this is key, if they don't fire you for that, it means they accept that what they pay you is being returned to them in work, so why give them more output for the same money?). Save your energy and time and focus on you, your family, your projects. Companies don't care for you, so why the fuck care for them. Get in. Put the minimum that the company accepts for they pay and get the fuck out. Anything else is just bad choice that are have more positives for the companies and downsides for yourself
