odshoifsdhfs··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
investment rental properties, just normal investments with boring returns, carpentry, electrical installations, handy-man jobs.

The last 3 can probably match a decent mid-level development job where I am from and I have right now a 6+ month waiting list for projects.

Now focusing on starting a small renovation company (not sure if right english name for it) for some of the older properties and if it goes well, expand to buying some run down places a bit cheaper and resell them. (Had limited success with this before, but was subcontracting most of the work, now want to bring it in-house) (ps: not buy for 100k and sell for 500k, but something like buy for 100k, spend 40-60k and sell for 180k)

odshoifsdhfs··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
I don't know if it is related to promotion, but last few months there has been a push to use more and more AI in everything. As I said in a different comment, I know for a fact that part of the investment they got was contigent on part of it being used on AI.
odshoifsdhfs··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
I don't really care about the dev future as a few years ago I started to divert from it and most of my income is in other things.

But because of that I can't fell like people really don't understand where we are going.

I have a conspiracy theory that even VCs are on it. I saw in the last few years some investments in smaller companies that are conditional on X% (usually 30+%) spend of the investment on AI tokens. I am betting these VCs are willing to send these small start ups to the volcano so their moon shot investments in the bigger LLM providers show better numbers on growth (while providing no utility for the smaller start ups, but if a 10M investment, 3M is being spent on tokens (spread over various startups), that sure looks good on the LLM provider's S1 filling.

odshoifsdhfs··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
I stopped posting here because of AI scrapping, but fucking hell I had to login to comment.

I has this stupid same shit done in a PR just a few weeks ago. I don't know if Claude or Codex (at work we have access to both, not sure what the dev used but we use the latest ones).

We had a function called:

`getObjectsInfo(objectIds: [number]) -> [ObjectInfo]`

I don't know what the dev prompted, but the PR was 90+ line function and 300+ lines of tests because the model decided to create:

`getObjectMetaData(objectId: number) -> ObjectInfo`

with added tests and so on, when just calling it with `getObjectsInfo([objectId])` will do the trick, no new code or tests

The output and logic was 99% the same, same types and db calls, but because I assume in the prompt the dev said 'Metadata' instead of 'Info', the model decided to create a 500+ changes PR.

odshoifsdhfs··on I let AI build a tool to help me figure out what was waking me up at night
Maybe take your mother to brunch or something. I am pretty sure it will be better than any chatgpt session she has running for a week
odshoifsdhfs··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
Yes. Why the fuck are we pretending they are not? Even his husband is a valid target as he knows who he goes to bed with and where the caviar comes from. (I will probably say his kid no because he has no responsibility/understanding of this)
odshoifsdhfs··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
I hope so, because if instead of reflecting and trying to prevent whatever I created is used to hurt people, my option is to try to lobby/shield me from it, I hope the angry mob to come after me and put me my head on the stake, I will deserve it.
odshoifsdhfs··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
Well, you know, dead palestinians aren't paying their salaries or investing in their companies, so they aren't as important as a accelerator that in the last batch had 90+% of 'AI' companies.

Think of the investments they may lose. We can't have any of that can we?

odshoifsdhfs··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
So, OpenAI, Brockman, not sure about Altman directly, donated millions to Trump&Co, support and let use their technology to kill/harm millions of people, and now we are supposed to pretend to feel sorry for them?

None of those news items, comments, news made you want to get away from this, but now that your YC buddy is the target and whatever else fuck is used to justify it? When ICE killed american citizens, school girls killed it was all 'we flagged this as flamewar and what now' but now because he is part of the cadre, NOW it is disgusting? I would laugh if this wasn't the fucking future we are at, just sucking to these assholes

odshoifsdhfs··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
So.. like Altman?
odshoifsdhfs··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
I don't know if he is a racist or not, but forget HN. Last couple years it has gone on the deep end, not sure if delusion or $ interests, but it is impossible to have a decent conversation here. I think the only reason this article stayed up is because OAI is starting to be a bit 'toxic' now, but if this was published a year ago, it would have been flagged to oblivion.

So just ignore those points and flags. HN *used* to be a nice place for intelectual conversations, even if you disagreed with each other. Now is nothing more than bots, people with financial interests in this bubble or sycophants.

odshoifsdhfs··on AI Gets Wrong Woman Jailed for Six Months, Life Ruined
But have they have tried the latest models? I understand this from October last year but Opus 4.6 is light and day and I wasn't a believer but now with this latest model it changed everything. it hasn't send any innocent person to jail yet and identified all my neighboorhood creeps 100%.

odshoifsdhfs··on AI should not replace people at Atlassian, says CEO
You are being downvoted because of the 'me too', but think you are refering to companies copying other companies (Amazon hires 10k? We hire 10k! Google fires 5k? we fire 5k) and not the 'me too' movement about sexual assault/harrassement.
odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: Is Claude down again?
please please please tell me this is real

because if it is, god, I'm done with this industry. just done. I rather sell my toenail clippings for scraps of food than deal with this shitty insanity

odshoifsdhfs··on Uber is letting women avoid male drivers and riders in the US
I've been falsely accused of sexual harassment by a manager (woman) when I was the victim myself from her(I rejected her, next day she accused me of grabbing her in the ass and some nasty words, which I NEVER DID) and even had a witness that could corroborate that she was the one doing it. I was fired and didn't even have a chance to defend myself. (and no, trying to use legal means would be an uphill battle that my lawyer recommended against).

I do believe women when they say they are assaulted/harassed, I don't victim blame, but after that experience I just avoid any situation that could cause someone to cause me harm by lying, so yeah, no being alone with women that aren't family, no giving or helping women that are alone, etc.

odshoifsdhfs··on Layoffs at Block
Not directly at YOU.

I will stay "Fuck you". I've been in this working field for 25 years or so (and more as a hobbyist). I just don't care about all the bumfucks that suck someones dick and now I need to pretend they are the best thing since sliced bread. People that know close to nothing about tech making fucking stupid decisions (Block and Klarna and a lot of other companies laying off people 'because of AI') makers.

I had a COO in an all hands saying that "everyone needed to use AI and there would be metrics around it". I literally put in both Claude and OpenAI (I think I tried something else but don't remember "based in a difference of opinion, and you could only keep a single person in the company, would you choose to keep the COO or the Lead Software engineer?" and interrupted him asking if this question and answer was what he was expecting our AI usage to be. (ps: try it yourself, see what the all mighty AI says). I never heard a pip from him since then.

And fuck move to Tier-1 cities. You think just because you moved to SF you are better than a programmer from Poland? I've worked with ex Google/FB/Netflix and Apple. Top senior developers. Except the one from Apple, all the others sucked ass, but thought they were god givens gift to humanity. (At least I was payed very well to fix they fucking mistakes).

And the fact you say 'it is harder to fire someone you had beers with' just really solidifies my point that was never about performance or quality of work, is just who can gargle that big fat dick the best

(ps: I'm in general not against AI but ok with people using it to improve a bit of productivity, I'm against top down decisions that AI will suck your dick while writing python at the same time and if you are a programmer, you better get your dick sucking skills up because that is the only way you will keep your job)

odshoifsdhfs··on Andrej Karpathy talks about "Claws"
It wasn't about the submission itself, is just about every post/comment you do about AI. I don't downvote you or anything, but a bit tired. So if it can save me time to just skip over submissions/comments I will do.

(for the rest, I was able to hide in Safari using manarth comment here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46341604

If anyone has one that will also work for user comments I would appreciate it.

odshoifsdhfs··on Andrej Karpathy talks about "Claws"
Hah i didn’t see who submitted it but as soon as I read your message i thought it was simonw, and behold, tada!

HN really needs a way to block or hide posts from some users.

odshoifsdhfs··on Show HN: I quit coding years ago. AI brought me back
I will say it for you though. If the calculator doesn't work or shows wrong results, then it is shit. I don't care if made with AI, humans or monkeys.

`Professional Calculators

Free, accurate, and easy-to-use tools for finance, math, and everyday calculations.`

So yeah, fuck this. Website looks 99% similar to the many shadcn themes available, has some errors in the calculations and then have a new account propagating 'ohhh look at me, I did all this with Claude/GPT/my aunt's raspberry pi running X, AI is amazing. All Hail AI.` is tiring and I'm just going to assume it is either paid marketing, people invested directly or indirectly in these companies or just sycophant idiots.

Also, anyone knows an extension or website where I can just filter submissions if they include AI or LLM or Clause in the title? Getting really tired of this shit.

odshoifsdhfs··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
fuck it, just donated 500 (there goes my drinking money for the rest month! probably helped I am drunk right now)

edit: just realized it is the 2nd. hard month ahead I guess!

Thanks for the reply. No hack clubs in my area so seems it is a no-go for now.
odshoifsdhfs··on Hotel booking sites overcharge Bay Area customers
RIU hotels does. If you are part of their program after you stay you can go to your profile and add points for previous stays that weren't booked through them

odshoifsdhfs··on We are teen hackers from around the world who code together
I will dive into the webpage a bit better later on, but at a glance I don't seem to be able to find how to 'help' as an adult. Would love to either organize or help something in my town.

I could only find a slack channel to join but no other public info. Was this how you got in touch with them? Or did I miss something?

odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: My director got fired. His rival is taking his place. What to expect?
Haha don't! But appreciate the concern, and evil is in the eye of the beholder or something like that no?

Just after 20+ years in the business, as the LP song went, in the end it doesn't even matter. So just look after yourself, your own, and f* the rest. If there is something you can take advantage of, do so, because companies will do their most on their end to do the same. Saw friends thrown out in the street while manager/bosses took big bonuses for 'reducing costs' (aka firing people). So just flip that shit, make them pay, make them suffer. make them PAY!!!

odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: My director got fired. His rival is taking his place. What to expect?
Well, just come out as gay or recovering alcoholic or something that will make them think twice about firing you by being afraid of a lawsuit. Should work at least for a few months until you have some time to figure your next move
odshoifsdhfs··on Making your own hot sauce
Massa de pimentao has various recipes (as pretty much any sauce here). You can even buy in store different brands that have different flavour profiles. I guess you will have to tweak a more generic recipe to match the flavour you are looking for (or if you have some brand/restaurant you like, I can try and see if I can find it).
odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: How to handle a senior hire turning out to be junior?
You fucked up, but most likely you are playing with vc money so who gives a fuck? Pay him, keep him. Chances are you will fold in a year or two so at least you make someones life a bit better for a while.

You not saving the world or anything like that, so just syphoon as much of the idiots vcs moneys to normal people lives. That is the goal with start ups right?

odshoifsdhfs··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey

odshoifsdhfs··on Be My Eyes’ AI assistant starts rolling out
I am a volunteer at Be My Eyes.

Just wanted to say, not talking whatever you feel you should do, but me and others I know don't feel at all like you are 'Bothering a random human multiple times a day'. I personally feel extremely lucky when I get a 'call' and am able to help.

Not much else regarding your comment, just wanted to let you know that I have had very satisfying 'calls' and I am always looking for the next one and always happy when I do.

odshoifsdhfs··on When did people stop being drunk all the time?
Only if you measure cup (200 or so ml) of Gyukuro to an expresso (30 ml). Per 'weight' it has much less then coffee. (same measurements: 100 ml of expresso is about 210 mg of caffeine and 100ml of gyukuro is about 70mg of caffeine)
