karmicthreat··on People Who Apply for Jobs by Showing Up
My first real software gig was having a conversation with someone and them asking if I knew anything about making a flash program talk to a ticket printer. I described the approach I would take and they said they would pay me XX an hour if I could get close to my estimated time. So I wrote them a little python service to handle their flash games printing. It took a whole lot more time than I thought mostly because the flash games were written by a contracting group in India. But that started me out.

Mind, it was a completely shit service. I mean every time I think about it I think of more vulnerabilities. Unfortunately the contractor leading things had very little clue. So they were no good for guidance. It wasn't until my next job that I really got some mentoring.

karmicthreat··on Eve Online's most notorious player has quit the game
Goonfleet has always loved their charismatic fascist leaders though. A whole lot of the early GF propaganda was veiled Triumph of the Will.
karmicthreat··on Eve Online's most notorious player has quit the game
He was previously a DC lawyer who FIREed and moved out to WI. I think he made a little money but I don’t think it was anything other than toy money.
karmicthreat··on Eve Online's most notorious player has quit the game
I mean at the end of the day Goonswarm was entertainment for Mittens. So when imaginary spaceships become unfun, its probably time to go.

He was far better than Remedial was.

karmicthreat··on Entire telecomm infrastructure of Iceland sold to private equity?
Not only will it not lower taxes, people will pay even more for the service with higher increases each year.

And in 10-20 years with no investment they will wonder why the telecom system is breaking.

karmicthreat··on A new trade and liberal arts school: “College of St. Joseph the Worker”
Probably get you through more doors than someone without one if you both have zero experience. It can lessen the hurdle of getting that first experience also if you take advantage of internship your university can arrange.
karmicthreat··on A new trade and liberal arts school: “College of St. Joseph the Worker”
UT Austin is a completely established school. I'm talking about the deceptively named University of Austin which is the Musk, Rogan, Fridman affiliated school opening maybe soon. I don't know if those 3 are actually affiliated with it, but their names come up with it.
karmicthreat··on A new trade and liberal arts school: “College of St. Joseph the Worker”
These new "freedom" or other themed universities set my griftdar off every time. Like the University of Austin does. I'm not very fond of the grifty nature of established post-secondary education either. But you at least get something of some value at the end.
karmicthreat··on Tesla Autopilot Almost Steers Model 3 into Oncoming Train
I'm a terrible driver and its probably best there is an automated system to back me up. And from my experience with my daily commute, there are also many other terrible drivers on the road. While Autopilot isn't perfect, its better than just throwing your hands up and saying nothing can be done about accidents.
karmicthreat··on Raspberry Pi Pico W: your $6 IoT platform
It has more to do with the RPI people not communicating about their supply issues effectively and not being effective in working with customers to plan for them.

While that doesn't currently affect the Pico, maybe it will in the future. So its probably just better to sidestep the whole thing and not use their products.

karmicthreat··on What do Starlink’s latest Ookla results mean for its RDOF winnings?
I meant 10 years total. 2018-2028.
karmicthreat··on What do Starlink’s latest Ookla results mean for its RDOF winnings?
It mean pretty much nothing. SpaceX has 10 years (2028) to get things up and running. If Starship isn't running in a year or two SpaceX has more trouble than just the RDOF competition. 2.0 Starlink sats are theoretically a 10x capacity improvement and it NEEDS Starship for launch. Falcon can't lift it.
karmicthreat··on Raspberry Pi Pico W: your $6 IoT platform
The ESP32 wrover modules that come with 8M of PSRAM are pretty cost effective. 3-4$ in single part quantities is pretty good.
karmicthreat··on Raspberry Pi Pico W: your $6 IoT platform
ESP32 products.
karmicthreat··on Raspberry Pi Pico W: your $6 IoT platform
I'm going to avoid RPI products where I can for right now. All the issues with availability have turned me off on them. Their attempts to get compute modules to businesses using them for products seems to have failed (or at least I have heard nothing from them). And this part in particular seems under specced compared to the competition.
karmicthreat··on Whatever hit the Moon in March, it left a double crater
The government decided to finally take out the Moon because it was interfering with local tv channels.
karmicthreat··on Ask HN: What do you use VMs for regularly?
I help one of my co-workers out with some industrial work. Its AB Studio 5000 and Wonderware edge. These programs are terrible. They are not backward compatible so the standard thing every control engineer seems to do is have 500 different VMs. One for each version of each individual program. It's bonkers.

Working on industrial equipment even with current technology is like going back 20 years. The controls software ecosystem seems to just barely be accepting version control now. Instead of just directory after directory of duplicates named "XXX - v1.000 - I really deployed this one to plant XXX"

karmicthreat··on Tesla’s ‘phantom braking’ problem is getting worse
Thats deep rain. For some reason someone thought using machine learning for wipers was a great idea.
karmicthreat··on What a gas stove ban means for restaurants
What's a good one in Chicagoland? I get over there every once in a while.
karmicthreat··on What a gas stove ban means for restaurants
I miss Korean BBQ on a gas or charcoal burner. The only places I have ever managed to have it that was at Jongro in NYC or everywhere in Korea. The electric burner experience just isn't as fun.
karmicthreat··on Tesla’s ‘phantom braking’ problem is getting worse
There is a long list of things that work poorly and would be nice to change out with something that works.

UI - Just let me integrate 3rd party apps finally.

Deeprain - My car likes to run the wipers on a perfectly dry sunny day sometimes. To my great vexing annoyance.

Autoheadlights - Its just bad. On off, on off constantly.

Deepsleep - Car just doesn't want to wake up sometimes. Either on entry or when accessing it on my phone.

karmicthreat··on Show HN: A friend and I spent 6 years making a simulation game, finally released
I'm in this boat also. Geforce Now https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce-now/ has worked pretty well for me with these sorts of games. It's not perfect, but it's been relatively responsive.
karmicthreat··on House Bill Funds CHIPS Act, Stresses R&D
It's not less chemical intensive at all. Some aqueous processes have replaced more toxic ones. But dissolved copper and solvent waste makes up the majority of ever fabs waste stream. TSMC/Intel etc have made pretty big strides in zero landfill hazardous waste. It just gets recycled and used in other processes internally or by other companies.

I don't know what the Chinese fabs do, so I have no idea if pump their waste out into the environment.

karmicthreat··on Hack a satellite
I love working on these. I'm not really into CTFs but I learn quite a bit each time I participate in Hack-a-Sat. The astrodynamics questions in CTF1 were quite hard, such as make a star tracker and find your position.

karmicthreat··on Intel can’t grow profits in a global chip shortage
If that was the case the compute modules would be unaffected. You can't get even those right now either.
karmicthreat··on OpenMower – Open-source robot lawn mower [video]
I worked in this space for a while. It’s a hard problem because none of the mowers take topology into account. Mostly they try to navigate a planned path along a 2d plane and just compensate to stay on their path. So the mower will attack elevation changes wrong.
