googlryas··on Ask HN: Why is there no P2P streaming protocol like BitTorrent?
Sounds like a recipe for dissatisfied users

"Why's my internet slow? Oh, YouTube is uploading a bunch of stuff to other people"

"How did I hit my bandwidth cap for the month already? Oh, youtube is..."

googlryas··on How to Win an Argument with a Toddler
If there's one thing on my 4 year olds plate that he "doesn't like", I have him close his eyes and try to guess which food item I just put in his mouth. After the game is over he'll usually just continue eating everything without complaint.
googlryas··on Meta antitrust trial kicks off in federal court
I'm positive that OP understands the reason for an FTC approval. Why did you cut the quote off in the middle of the sentence? The point is about why it's acceptable for the FTC to approve something, and then years later come back and change the decision.

What makes you think the products you like will even be launched, if the acquisition pathway to success is not available?
googlryas··on Evelyn Waugh’s Decadent Redemption
Why does HN lie? There are comments in this thread saying they were posted "18 hours ago" (eg from giraffe_lady), but I am positive I read these comments 3 days ago on the same thread.
googlryas··on How to bike across the country
I never slept in a post office, but rural firefighters were always very good to me on bikepacking trips. Plying me with food and letting me sleep in their gym or somewhere around the station.
googlryas··on How to Bike Across the Country
I bike packed 2000 miles around Europe, and one time in the mountains outside San Sebastian I was chased by a black bear. Weird people were probably the most dangerous wildlife, but like OP, basically every interaction with strangers I had was positive. But, I did move my tent a few times after setting it up upon realizing that the weird person I interacted with earlier knew where I was sleeping.
googlryas··on How to Bike Across the Country
After getting 4 flats in 4 days on a bike trip, I had good luck with anti-puncture kevlar tire liner tape.
googlryas··on Leaked data reveals Israeli govt campaign to remove pro-Palestine posts on Meta
This is exactly why I want to see the posts, because I don't really trust 3rd parties to accurately classify "peaceful content in support of Palestine". It's possible Facebook is wrong. It's also possible that it's filled with content that is peaceful in only the most shallow, ignorant reading possible. e.g. (paraphrasing from my facebook feed last year, on a post which was not taken down): "I'm planning a celebration on October 7th in support of my Palestinian friends, who wants to join me :)"
googlryas··on Leaked data reveals Israeli govt campaign to remove pro-Palestine posts on Meta
I'd like to see examples of actual posts that were taken down, rather than talk of the quantity, or who filed the reports.
googlryas··on If you get the chance, always run more extra network fiber cabling
I use the MoCA 2.5 adapter by goCoax. I won't say I recommend it since I haven't compared it to other adapters, but it appears to do what I want it to do and I get about 2Gbps through the adapters. Every one I could find seemed to be around the same price point ($60-$80 per adapter) so I just went with a well reviewed one.

I would definitely recommend if fishing cat6 is not an option and you would need to open up walls. Unless your BIL has a lot of kids and their friends over who all like to stream different 4k movies from a NAS, I can't imagine any normal user with 1gbps WAN finding 2gbps LAN insufficient.

Okay, so you stack the court. And then when the other team gets in there, they restack the court, and the restacked court overturns all the things that your stacked Court did. Repeat ad nauseam

It's an interesting tactic to blame the people that want to fix the bad thing, but can't for whatever reason, instead of blaming the people that are actually responsible for the bad thing, or are actively working against fixing the bad thing.
googlryas··on We don't have official RSS feed support for now, but we're working on a solution
I've been at Google 14 years and 2014 was around the time I noticed more and more people internally lamenting that old Google was dead.

I think you haven't been paying attention if you think people shooting guns at the public, or at cops, is an "extraordinary circumstance" in America. It's not just mall shootings, or parkland. It's also people just shooting at cops after getting pulled over for speeding, which is far less likely to get national news attention.

You're free to ignore it, but I added the point about grizzly bears because you seemed confused how a gun can help defend you against someone with a gun. It can help defend you against many threats, in fact.

Edit:responded from the account on my phone, sorry for any confusion.

googlryas··on The new toll to drive into Manhattan won't change much by itself
Possibly, but more likely is that cops don't like dealing with boring traffic offenses, and doing a bunch of paper work for them. And the money booked from the ticket, if it is even paid, goes to the general fund and not to the cops to buy fancy toys, so they have even less incentive to waste their time with it.
googlryas··on The SHA256 for this sentence begins with: one, eight, two, a, seven, c and nine.
While we're there, since the message has a fixed prefix, you can initiate the sha256 computation with it, and then repeatedly branch off of that for the test suffix.
googlryas··on In Germany, 27 are in 'preventive detention' b/c they might do climate protests
You are either extremely misinformed about climate change, or are intentionally being melodramatic.

The interesting thing about old people is they tend to die, and bequeath their properties to their children.
googlryas··on Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing
The US system is pay as you go, so it is just paying taxes on time, not ahead of time. Tax day is just the date when all your accounts are supposed to be settled up for the year.
googlryas··on Ask HN: What is your policy regarding smartphones for your children?
Nah, they're super enticed by it. For the first two years of my kids life, we had no screens in the house that he ever saw. We had old Nokia brick phones, no TV, and we only used a computer when he was sleeping.

Regardless, the moment he saw an iPad in the library, he wanted to stare at it and fiddle with it for an hour. Even to the point of completing ignoring the model train set which he loves.

I like the concept, but I'm not having much luck. I entered "weird looking monkey", hoping to get Proboscis, golden snub nosed, etc, but I just end up with the articles "Pet monkey","List of individual monkeys", "Ethnoprimatology", "Monkey".

Whereas when I type the same query into google, I get exactly what I expected. Which is kind of disappointing, I was hoping to find out about some weird looking monkeys that I didn't know about.

There is no such way to define strictly correct through logic alone in English. It's really just whatever people say.

After all, we have a ton of words that mix latin and greek roots/-fixes. Eg bioluminescence, bigamy, homophobic, etc.

googlryas··on Social media decline: Users are shifting to messaging apps and group chats
I've heard content creators either say explicitly in videos, or in text under videos, things along the line of "Sorry I made a mistake here but I need to get this video out". Imagine reading an essay where the author tried to pull something like that.
googlryas··on X plans to collect biometric data, job and school history
I've seen estimates that 65M Americans have twitter. 65M/330M is definitely enough of a critical mass to start something big.

Effectively, Musk paid $675 per (American) user to bootstrap his everything app. Probably easier to incrementally add features to the-app-formerly-known-as-Twitter than to build something brand new, even if you can get a ton of sign ups when it is first announced. Take threads as an example, people got excited for approximately 1 minute, then forgot about it.

googlryas··on How South Korea’s birth rate dropped below Japan’s
How exactly does that expectation work? What happens if you only pay 30% of your income to rent? Will you get passed over for a promotion if your boss sees you live slightly below what he is paying you, or something?
googlryas··on How South Korea’s birth rate dropped below Japan’s
It seems like now, more than any time in recorded history, the answer is "yes".
