gizmodo59··on Steve Ballmer Says Smartphones Broke His Relationship with Bill Gates
> Internet Explorer was a hugely successful browser dominating the market.

Mostly because it was shipped with Windows and many people wont change it (Non tech). Furthermore, setting aside the anti-trust case, I would rather say they did not capitalize on that start they got IMHO.

gizmodo59··on How Hackers Broke into John Podesta and Colin Powell’s Gmail Accounts
> I personally believe it does

Not to sound arrogant, I really like to know some reasoning behind it. I'm even more curious to understand if you are an American citizen.

gizmodo59··on Google's “Director of Engineering” Hiring Test
Its not that simple. There are quotas by country. For someone with a let's say Bachelors or even Masters degree from certain countries, just money wont get them GC soon. The wait time is several years AFAIK.
gizmodo59··on Oracle’s Cloudy Future
A genuine question: If you have worked with any fortune 500/1000 companies (Lets pick non software based companies) either directly or if they are your customers, how many of them use Oracle database or SQL Server?

Some of the reasons why this trend WILL continue:

1. Critical software like databases needs support. To the point where there should be someone who can come on premise to fix things.

2. We need to use X because X is used by other big corporations and you never get fired for choosing X.

3. The products (Oracle,MS SQL) are not that bad. (Not sure if there is a better way to put this)

I could be wrong, but I can't think of any other important reason. Can anyone pitch in their experience?

gizmodo59··on EpiPen Maker Quietly Steers Effort That Could Protect Its Price
Adding to this, if you have insurance most of the hospitals will jack up the prices. One of my friend did not have the insurance card, so the hospital billed X$ and told him that if he later gives the insurance id they will charge them. He later called the hospital and gave the insurance details and he is charged (X+Y)$. Being the first time he got sick this year, he had to pay his entire deductible meaning he paid more because he HAD insurance.
gizmodo59··on EpiPen Maker Quietly Steers Effort That Could Protect Its Price
One of the things I do not understand is, the explanation given is that Obamacare fixes the donut hole where people who are not enrolled in company sponsored/medicare could get insurance.

This has just let the drug companies to raise the price without any backslash because the end user is "not" paying the price. However, the rising premiums and plans with high deductibles meant that the drugs are still not affordable even if you are covered by some insurance.

What is the solution to this? Single-payer health care?

gizmodo59··on Google to acquire Apigee
2018: Support is discontinued. Please use our forums where intelligent bots will reply you.

2020: We are now discontinuing Apigee.

gizmodo59··on The Correct Way to Validate Email Addresses
Asking to retype though being a simple solution IMHO is asking for a lot. Consider a user who uses mobile phone, even copy paste is annoying. Validating if the mail box exists and that it does not belong to a provider like mailinator and then sending a confirmation link to them works. While its not perfect, it does address lot of other concerns without sacrificing user experience.
gizmodo59··on How Google obliterated my 4 year old Chrome extension featuring 24k+ users
Google is highly unreliable for developers. The number of products that are discontinued are staggering. Not trying to be pessimistic but unfortunately many feels like that.
gizmodo59··on An account of a serious medical emergency on a transoceanic flight
I just read the wiki about fuel dumping. Based on that it seems less likely that most of the passenger flights have fuel dumping capabilities. Nice read though.
gizmodo59··on 90% of software developers in the US work outside Silicon Valley
Perhaps the take away is that 10% of all the Software Developers in US are in a very small area which is indeed high.
gizmodo59··on Seymour Papert has died
I'm not sure about this. Stanford/Harvard is much more than the curriculum.
gizmodo59··on Guide to Demo Day Pitches
Is it Aaron Swartz in the picture? Felt a little bad.
gizmodo59··on Microsoft Ships Python Code in 1996 (2009)
Don't large corporations switch to a statically typed languages when their code base grows? (FB tried Hack, Google still uses Java(Ads)/C++, Netflix using Java) Personally I felt the same when dealing with large code base. Does this apply to anyone else too out here? I'm really curious to know how much of the main revenue generating and critical code are in a statically typed language.

That being said, I love python and its the goto language when it comes to shell scripting replacement/quick internal web applications/dev ops stuff etc.

gizmodo59··on C14 – Cheap, secure long term cloud storage
http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/ I do not understand why many choose to do it. It is definitely annoying.
gizmodo59··on How to Pick Your Battles on a Software Team
If something is the best way to do, then the one who is proposing it has to convince others usually. More often its about showing them how it can save lots of time in the future. But the reality is that people don't want to spend time unless it has a big business impact and the time it takes to learn/modify is justified by the cost.
gizmodo59··on Docker 1.12: Now with Built-In Orchestration

gizmodo59··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
This is an all cash acquisition.
gizmodo59··on Google stores voice searches

"identify an actual human inside the mothership"

This is so valuable. I was intrigued by who wrote this and no wonder it is Patrick. (I highly recommend this article by him: http://www.kalzumeus.com/2011/10/28/dont-call-yourself-a-pro...).

My two cents: Talk to human. Develop social skills they matter more than what you think.

gizmodo59··on Julie Rubicon
By seeing the title along with the domain facebook.com I couldn't resist but click. Perfect click bait. Though a good story.

gizmodo59··on A Message to Our Customers
I'm really curious as I have been hearing this many times.

Diversity need not be a reason for non unification. India for example is so diverse that each state has its own language, food, culture etc..
