“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” — C.S. Lewis

branon··on Google kills two-year “Pixel Pass” subscription after just 22 months
Parsec and Steam's remote play feature support both LAN and WAN. Mileage varies, wired LAN is better than wireless LAN is better than WAN.

You're correct in the notion that running these types of apps relies on your home Internet connection (along with your hotel connection or wherever you're located). This is almost certainly lower performance, lower quality, and higher latency than gaming from a Google datacenter via Stadia.

branon··on “AI has turned every WiFi router into a camera that can work in the dark”
Every Wi-Fi router, or only routers it's trained on, deployed into rooms it's been trained on with camera footage?
branon··on Spotify looked to ban white noise podcasts to become more profitable
My thoughts exactly. How out of touch are these people?
branon··on 2009scape
There's a similar project where the intent is to automate the game - https://github.com/dginovker/2006rebotted

I think 2009scape itself might even have some automation-focused servers as well

branon··on "About 67k” sites are banned from submission on HN, the list is kept secret
I don't really mind this, it's an open secret that discourse on HN is deejay'd behind the scenes by the mod team and I think it helps set this site above all the rest.

The exact mechanisms by which this moderation is accomplished need not be public, that's the balance between the secret part versus the open part.

branon··on YouTube-Dl Site Goes Offline as Hosting Provider Enforces Court-Ordered Ban
It's laughable how symbolic and ultimately meaningless this is. GitHub has already proven themselves to be a good actor in this particular fight, so not only is the repo online, but we also have http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/

The Uberspace provider is appealing the decision as well. Even with the site down, this looks incredibly positive from where I sit. Rightsholders and litigators get stuffed, we always win!

branon··on GM confirms $130k Cadillac won’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
I was being facetious, I of course read the "article" before commenting. Only the first paragraph was actually about this particular vehicle model, the others went on random tangents about GM/Tesla business direction and Apple sales data.

The large pillar-to-pillar screen is pretty cool but the text doesn't specify whether it's touch or not. Squinting at the image a bit, pretty obvious that it is. Same for the center console.

I suppose it's a given that all screens have to be touchable now. Such a drag, input challenge is dangerous when hurtling down the highway. Prefer to have physical controls I can grab onto.

branon··on GM confirms $130k Cadillac won’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
Good! Hopefully it will have no touchscreen either, only tactile buttons.
branon··on YouTube will now show a blank homepage if you don’t have watch history on
Sounds minimalistic, I like it. My dummy Google account loaded in a Firefox container tab with YT watch history disabled just got even better.
branon··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
The irony here is that you will get NVIDIA (and AMD) drivers vendored through Windows Update automatically by default. These work fine for 3D acceleration, and don't install GFE or require an account.

You'll just be a few versions behind, not sure what their release cadence is for this. But as far as I know this is a net positive to the Windows PC user and potentially eliminates needing to deal with GFE/Adrenalin as long as you are satisfied with the builds Microsoft is shipping you.

> I can't think of any way that making an accommodation wheelchair friendly inconveniences anyway.

Well, I've sacrificed a heck of a lot of great parking spaces to accommodate the differently-abled.

> Why should they have to endure having those epithets hurled at them?

I contest that the mere act of reading or hearing certain words could be construed as a task of "endurance" - one is perfectly free to avoid reading or hearing such things if one finds them overtaxing.

On the other hand, if one chooses to "endure" for a moment, one might realize that the schizophrenic delusions of a madman have little bearing on the exact epithets being "hurled" (hurled where? Nowhere in particular, unless one glows in the dark!)

Sticks and stones... RIP Terry. I also don't mind that he was banned from here though, as much as I'm for unfettered speech, if the person in charge decided they didn't wish to host his, that was their prerogative. Terry certainly had other outlets.

branon··on The death of privacy front ends?
Teddit, my preferred Reddit frontend, still manages to have an updated frontpage, but clicking on anything gives HTTP 429 for several weeks now (I think, only use it intermittently).

If the frontends quit working though, I just won't go to those websites anymore.

branon··on WHO aspartame brouhaha
Oh no! I've been drinking Zevia daily for almost a year now and it 100% replaces conventional HFCS soda for me. We haven't had Coke in the house since we discovered Whole Foods sells 12-pack cases of Zevia in all flavors. My favorites are cherry cola and Dr. Zevia, with cream soda and root beer very close behind.

Some flavors are caffeinated, others non-caffeinated, and I'm just as subject to caffeine addiction as I am to sugar, so the option to keep some of the spice flowing is nice.

The only flavor that didn't cut it was the mtn dew flavor, can't really replicate that particular beverage without all the bad ingredients so it fell a bit flat.

The other drink that's good are the carbonated sucralose drinks in the tall plastic containers. They sell under a few brands, most often Sparkling Ice or Sparkling Frost.

There is also powdered and liquid drink additive, sold as Stur (stevia), PurAqua (sucralose), and True Lemon (cane sugar + stevia) - no carbonation here, but fine in a pinch.

Hydration comes into play. I drink a lot of this stuff figuring hey, the first ingredient is water, so I probably don't need to drink as much water, right? But my lips still get chapped if I don't have at least one glass of pure water a day.

branon··on WHO aspartame brouhaha
Pet peeve of mine is trying to buy those packaged cups of pre-cut fruit in liquid. In the US at least, the fruit can be found floating in several subtly different liquids, including:

* a light sugar syrup

* a heavy sugar syrup

* a naturally sweetened stevia syrup

* fruit juice from concentrate (usually/always white grape juice even though there are NO grapes in the product), with no added sugar/sweetener

* the fruit's own juices, not from concentrate, and with no added sugar/sweetener

* plain water and nothing else

The sugary syrups taste fine but I don't want added sugar in my fruit. Stevia doesn't combine well with fruit, because the fruit (peaches, say) is already sweet and the stevia taste clashes badly. Same for the white grape juice from concentrate - why would I want my peaches to taste like grapes?

Only the last two are acceptable to me - I want the fruit floating in _its own juices_ with no modifications made. Water is also fine but is even more rare than juices-only.

Guess which types are the hardest to find at the grocery store? Yeah, the last two, juices-only and water-only.

Similar story for applesauce. There are several different sweetened varieties, but unsweetened applesauce is comparatively rare. The best applesauce is unsweetened with cinnamon added ... mmm! But make sure it's not the type with apple skins floating around in the sauce, that's just wrong.

branon··on WHO aspartame brouhaha
Any stevia users here? Never liked the taste of aspartame (sucralose is okay) but if the docs start pondering whether or not stevia has links to cancer, I might be nervous. I drink a lot of the stuff.
branon··on Let's Encrypt issues 35 certs every second
It doesn't, no. Whoever told you that is wrong.

Bad actors can get TLS certificates issued for their phishing sites just the same as you can for a regular website. Encryption is for everybody.

branon··on People are paying to break printers with sledgehammers in smash rooms
Only traffic headed towards the router's WAN interface is dropped, LAN communication is allowed unfettered.

In my opinion there's never any reason a home office printer with one or two users should need to talk to the Internet.

branon··on FDA approves first nonprescription daily oral contraceptive
When will they come up with one that men can take?

Burden has always been on the women to take the contraceptives. Aren't their reproductive systems more complicated than men's anyway? Will there ever be a pill that can make me shoot blanks for a while?

branon··on People are paying to break printers with sledgehammers in smash rooms
Also a satisfied Brother laser printer user. I have the unit blocked in my router so it can't surreptitiously update its firmware and start doing this.

I always buy the Brother toner cartridges because they're the best quality, reasonably priced, and I want to support the business model of the only(?) decent printer manufacturer left.

All of this said, if I found out the printer was locking out third-party toner cartridges, I'd stop at nothing to defeat the lock, and would only use knockoff toner from then on.

It's an honor system through and through, I hope somebody in charge takes note.

branon··on Review: The AYANEO 2S is my new favourite handheld
Aren't MMOs usually on the lower end of graphical fidelity? A lot of them are quite old at this point. RuneScape runs great for example.
branon··on PHP packages for Ubuntu EOL releases put under paywall
This is pretty much how it's always been, LTS gets 5 years of support, then after it goes EOL you can pay Canonical for backported security updates to important packages.

What I'm not clear on is the relationship(s) between:

* Canonical's LTS lifecycle/extended support scheme,

* the linked deb.sury.org repository,

* and https://www.freexian.com/lts/php/

It sounds like deb.sury.org is voluntarily halting _their_ PHP packaging for the EOL Ubuntu release, and recommending this alternative vendor Freexian instead (why not recommend Canonical ESM, do they not do PHP?)

The claim being that "it's not possible to build the packages any more" but I'm not sure why this would be, necessarily. More a technicality because the upstream distro will be gone/paywalled so a downstream PPA can't reasonably provide support? But then how is the other vendor doing it?

(Looking closer, Freexian's PHP packager appears to be the same guy running deb.sury.org so while it _is_ turtles all the way down, none of this seems unreasonable to me)

branon··on The only acceptable rating to leave an Uber driver is 5 stars
Black Mirror episode "Nosedive" is relevant here.

Professionally, I feel I'm fighting against the corporate oligarchy when I rate all workers (telecom customer service reps, Microsoft support personnel) as five stars irrespective of how I actually felt about the service. I get paid the same at my job regardless, so it seems a waste to not be collaborative.

Recreationally, maybe it's an American thing. Our culture is one of generosity in spite of (not necessarily because of) the experience. I'll tip decent at a restaurant even if the food wasn't great or the service was slow. Granted, I might never go back, but if I'm there, I'm there to have a good experience and to be a good patron. Something would have to be VERY wrong for me to change course.

I don't use gig apps like Doordash or Uber often. I Uber'd once in an emergency and rating the driver was the last thing on my mind. He got 5 stars of course, but he always would have, unless I somehow never made it to my destination.

When interacting with large (or even small) businesses, gratuity items are one of the few things I as a customer have complete power over. For meals, I've already factored the tip into the cost so it's no sweat. For apps, the decision is even easier. One tap on the 5-star button and I can increase the level at which Uber values this non-employee? Easy.

Maybe it comes from the bad old days of raiding Internet polls and intentionally trying to disrupt corporate properties online, but I approach it from the mindset of "how much fun can I have with this?" and always using the highest rating seems the most amusing to me. Sometimes it's legitimate, other times it's more rueful, but it is always good-faith patronage in my opinion.

Somebody mentioned an Uber driver who crashed his car (hopefully not at-fault). I assume they didn't crash on purpose, so we know that guy was having a supremely shitty day. Yeah, I'd probably rate them 5 stars just for the hell of it. It had to have been the most memorable Uber ride ever. Maybe that's not worth much, but it's also not incentive to actively work against your fellow man on behalf of a corporation.

If corps want to farm out KPI work to the customer, I'll gladly oblige, but I'm going to mess with your stats for my trouble ;)

branon··on Has Xbox lost the console wars?
Microsoft has been keeping the Windows platform away from the gaming market in favor of Xbox, I'd imagine to avoid competing with themselves. Xbox has to have been getting subsidies from somewhere to run Game Pass. Despite all this help, they do seem to be stuck third place. Excluding Nintendo as a competitor seems wrong, it's not just about current-gen.

I don't play Activision/Blizzard games or use Xbox so I'm not really invested, but I tend to oppose market consolidation and monoculture whenever possible. That said, lately game releases have been pretty lackluster with some major flops and lots of remakes coming out. If the underdog thinks they can turn the tide by acquiring a major studio, I don't particularly want the government in the way either.

branon··on Jellyfin: Free software media system
Your filenames can't have colons in them? Sounds like a side-effect of keeping compatibility with 30 year-old Microsoft filesharing protocols. Samba is cool and everything but SMB has no advantages over NFS, SSHFS, or even bind mounts on the same host.
