“Necrobotics”, now that’s a term to add to my “I have no mouth and I must scream” nightmares
bigodbiel··on We haven’t killed 90% of all plankton
Not surprised, during Nietzsche’s time we had the rise of Spiritism, which presented itself as a “science” first and philosophical doctrine second.
bigodbiel··on Lego embraces modularity, metaverse with its software engineering culture
Thank you! The whole text lacks cohesion, it talks in buzzwords. This feels like some PR stunt without target audience.
bigodbiel··on What's the deal with all those weird wrong-number texts?
Exactly! Even Microsoft had a paper on this ‘Why do Nigerian Scammers Say They are from Nigeria?’ [1].

'By sending an email that repels all but the most gullible the scammer gets the most promising marks to self-select, and tilts the true to false positive ratio in his favor.’

Q Productions presents!

As conspiracy theory, it predates Trump/Qanon, we’ve had David Icke with his adrenochrome from children sucking reptilian royalties

bigodbiel··on Star Citizen is doing 'bedsheet deformation' physics now

bigodbiel··on The “New Chronology” of Anatoly Fomenko
Conspiracy theories are all fun and games until some idiot decides to shoot a pizza parlor or even start a war. Like any country Russia has a handful of conspiracy theorists, sadly it also has a phenomenal domestic propaganda machine which feeds directly into mass psyche.
bigodbiel··on As a live-in tutor, I’ve watched rich families adapt to Vladimir Putin’s war
“foreign soil” comparison isn’t really applicable here, it’s literally across the border, more like invading Canada. Ukrainians make up the second largest ethnicity inside Russia. And besides the war in Iraqi was off the heals of 9/11 and Afghanistan invasion, and still had saw many anti-war protests.
bigodbiel··on Hyperborea
I know people scoff(ed) at A.Dugin, but considering how Kremlin’s rhetoric has evolved recently, it is undeniable that it’s converging with (or its facade has dropped) the latter’s theories.

And Hyperborea takes, sadly, prominent stage.

bigodbiel··on Ask HN: Why did the ruble stabilize and what's going on?
>60% of global GDP is not a small fraction. As for countering sanctions, no one doubts the cat and mouse chase, but the Kremlin will be forced to funnel these to its weapons industry undermining economic and social development, akin to North Korea mid/long term.
bigodbiel··on Ask HN: Why did the ruble stabilize and what's going on?
Expecting concessions or not, it is undeniable that a quick victory wouldn’t have brought this amount of pain and isolation. Foreign reserve confiscation was enacted immediately and definitely unexpected, but other measures are being enacted with every passing day the conflict lingers.

bigodbiel··on Moskva cruiser sank while being towed in a storm – Russian Defense Ministry
I disagree. The "western world", that is Anglo-American centric world order, doesn't matter, but the Kremlin (not its ultra-nationalists calling for total war) knows it needs its ex-Soviet satelites plus China, India, etc.

This is about a new world order.

bigodbiel··on BBC: Killings in Bucha are deliberate massacre – Ukraine
It’s about a new world order. The end of the transatlantic alliance and liberal world order. The expectance was for other nations to follow suite, including Germany to take over the EU under its mantle.

This was supposed to be just the beginning.

bigodbiel··on Russians Are Racing to Download Wikipedia Before It Gets Banned
Even then, I can see a real market potential for bootleg sneakernet [1] dealers. VHS bootleg of western movies being dubbed by a single person were all the rage in the late 80’s Soviet countries [2]. If the internet is fully closed off, a new market for sneakernet of Internet segments would evidently emerge.

bigodbiel··on Saudi to consider accepting Yuan for oil sales
Petrodollars obtained by exporters is used to buy US based assets and/or financial instruments (treasury bonds, stocks, real estate), literally “recycling” all that extra capital... though the Saudis have been dumping a lot of their assets for a few years already, as they plan on diversifying their economy but I guess that’s tangential

bigodbiel··on What Nuclear Strategic Theory Says About Deterrence of Irrational Opponents
They didn’t slaughter because of religion, it was always because of power and means to attain or hold it. From the Crusades, Inquisition, Capitalism-Socialism to modern day Jihadism, it’s all ultimately about power.

bigodbiel··on Ask HN: Why does the Ruble still hold 50% of its value?
Simple: ruble conversion to USD or EUR is extremely limited; iirc only $10k can be withdrawn from dollar denominated accounts, currency exchange is largely restricted for business and individuals, the stock market remains closed, large businesses have been forced to sell foreign currency reserves, the Kremlin plans on repaying foreign debts in rubles only (ie technical default).

The hope is that the west unfreezes its Central Bank reserves, meanwhile they are buying time.
