arriu··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
Blender is incredible, harfbuzz equally so, pretty much all modern browsers do the impossible so they need to be included as well.
arriu··on Cancer under age 50 increased 80% from 1990 to 2019
Interesting, where can I read more?
arriu··on Show HN: Near-realtime cloud maps for weather visualisation, 3D models and more
Awesome! Thanks for putting this together.

Is there any way to get non-processed image data? Without the nighttime adjustments?

arriu··on Blender 4.0 release notes
Having done both web and gl ux for a living, I think you might be overestimating the complexity of a gl implementation and underestimating the complexity of meeting the same specs using a web implementation.

While not quite the same thing, if you have the time, dip your toes into some immediate mode UI, for example imgui. It is enjoyable not a grind.

arriu··on GPU Survival Toolkit for the AI age
Are amd GPUs still to be avoided or are they workable at this point?
arriu··on GitHub Copilot loses an average of $20 per user per month
At that rate I’d run my own model
arriu··on FDA Approves First Oral Treatment for Postpartum Depression
As a Canadian, I can confirm 12 months is not enough let alone 6 weeks… I am deeply saddened at the thought of mothers having to go back after so little time
arriu··on Electronic Structure of LK-99
Im sure I’m not the only person thinking 24 years is way too long for such an important advancement.

Huge respect for those in this field or others that don’t give up after so many years. Thank you

arriu··on How to start a Go project in 2023
One thing I wish there was better support for is live debugging and stepping through code.
arriu··on Vaonis Hyperia: $45k digital telescope
This is definitely the nicest all in one that I’ve seen yet. I guess there is a market for this somewhere but I don’t get who.

At 45k though, they really should have used a mount that doesn’t suffer from field rotation on longer exposures.

Also, the tube seems long, would have went with a more compact design OTA and a wider aperture.

I’m happy to see the full frame sensor with 16bit ADC, seems no expense was spared there.

arriu··on U-2 pilot's selfie above China's balloon taken over Missouri
Has anyone seen a better photo of the balloon?
arriu··on How Micro Drill Bits Are Made [video]
“This video is not available in your country”

Anyone have an alternative link?

arriu··on AirGradient Open Source Air Quality Monitor for CO2 and PM2.5 Measurements
How does this compare to something like the Aranet4 module?
arriu··on TIL you can de-obfuscate code with ChatGPT
Could this be taken to the extreme by asking it to decompile assembly?
arriu··on Tell HN: It is impossible to disable Google 2FA using backup codes
They do, and Google does.

Job descriptions are usually something like: "As a Technical Evangelist, you will be the face of the platform and often the first contact our customers have with us, both online and in person."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_evangelist

arriu··on Tell HN: It is impossible to disable Google 2FA using backup codes
I agree to some extent but large companies do staff roles that have public outreach as part of their job description. Suggesting that no one is able to say "there is an internal ticket for this" is not the full answer.
arriu··on Tell HN: It is impossible to disable Google 2FA using backup codes
Whenever one of these threads about Google (or Apple) come up, I am shocked at the lack of response from people working at those companies. It seems reasonable that this site would be where you'd find someone from a team that interacted with logic that OP is having trouble with.

I'd expect to see something like a "hey, yeah, I know a guy on our team that might be able to get in touch with the team who maintains this. I've sent them this thread"...

I'm hoping OP got a private message.

arriu··on AMD, Intel, and Nvidia Reportedly Slash Orders with TSMC
They are forecasting a lower demand in the short term future. I’d guess they ran the numbers and producing fewer high cost items is more cost effective for them.

Unfortunately, this likely means more shortages and costs stay high for the consumer.

arriu··on Brooklyn Bar Menu Generator (2015)
Butter —- $13

Lol

arriu··on Nuklear – A single-header ANSI C immediate mode cross-platform GUI library
For people that have used both Nuklear and ImGui, how do they compare? Which would you choose for your next project and why?
arriu··on ‘My power’s low’: NASA’s Insight Mars lander prepares to sign off
Same reason the rockets NASA uses are not reusable. It’s not part of the mission.

Yes, it’s short sighted but unfortunately a result of extreme budget constraints.

arriu··on Apple announces ‘upgrade’ to App Store pricing, adding 700 new price points
Maybe something like a Bloomberg terminal on the phone?

It does seem like quite a reach but I think there are a few legitimate niche markets for that price point.

arriu··on Apple announces ‘upgrade’ to App Store pricing, adding 700 new price points
So no changes to the 30% yet?
arriu··on Blockbench – A low-poly 3D model editor
How does something like this compare to doing low poly work within Blender? I imagine this is easier but I’m not an artist
arriu··on Show HN: I made a 2D shoot 'em up game with Go, using Entity Component System
This is true but the rendering engine has done the heavy lifting to map calls to the gpu correctly.

More build info here: https://ebitengine.org/en/documents/webassembly.html

arriu··on South Asian people undergo type 2 diabetes remission with low calorie diets
I agree but I think we’re still working on understanding what a healthy human actually is. Other than the obvious signs, it’s quite complicated.
arriu··on D2, a diagram scripting language that turns text to diagrams, is now open source
I got excited that the title was for the D2 game. Cool project nonetheless
arriu··on I decided to stop working on Mighty
Putting market fit aside, Mighty was a technical feat coming from a talented team.
arriu··on How to use your DSLR from 2008 as a webcam in 2022 (NixOS)
This should work with a ton of other cameras from roughly 2008 onwards. So long as it supports live view over usb with gphoto.

The camera from this article is also known as the Canon 500 or 1000D in other parts of the world.

arriu··on Show HN: A GitHub business card generator
Awesome! Made a change to my profile as a result but I guess the site is caching generated profiles. How long is the cache?
