adisbladis··on Tvix – A New Implementation of Nix
Tvix explicitly targets stable Nix features, so supporting Flakes is a non-goal.

Many users have a poor understanding of what Flakes _actually_ are: They are a bit of UX glue on top of existing Nix features:

- Input/output schemas for `flake.nix`

- A lock file format

- CLI features to work with the two above

It's entirely feasible to build out a Flake user interface & evaluation support on top of Tvix without making it a first-class evaluator feature. See https://github.com/edolstra/flake-compat for prior art.

The key point of Tvix _not_ having support for Flakes is to not make special snowflake evaluator features that are tied in with it.

adisbladis··on Build your own Docker with Linux namespaces, cgroups, and chroot
This is only true if use a Docker based workflow using `FROM nixos/nix`. This image exists mainly as a way for people to try out Nix with, not to build production images on top of. We ship many things which bloat the image size but makes it nicer for interactive usage.

Using dockerTools from nixpkgs is much better and gives you much smaller images closer to Alpine size.

adisbladis··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
Lenovo's paid warranty has been fantastic for me in the multiple countries where I've used it (Sweden, Hong Kong and Mexico). In all three they sent out a local service technician that fixed the problem on-site.

Once it was a a worn out SSD that was replaced with one twice as big as that was the only thing they had in stock (Sweden), another time it was a broken connector on the motherboard (Hong Kong) and the third time it was a broken display (Mexico, Cozumel). I was most impressed by the service in Mexico as it's pretty far from any major cities and the technician came out after only a day.

If good warranty service is important to you I cannot recommend enough to get a Lenovo (T, P or X series) laptop and shell out for the extra warranty.

adisbladis··on Linux Touchpad Like MacBook Update: Touchpad Gestures Now Shipping
The way I position my hands over the trackpoint my thumb is already hovering over the touchpad.

Having to hold down a button to scroll is terrible ergonomics.

adisbladis··on Linux Touchpad Like MacBook Update: Touchpad Gestures Now Shipping
I exclusively use the trackpoint for mouse input and configuring the edge scroll to occupy the entire touchpad meaning that I can use my thumb to scroll without moving my hand away from the trackpoint.

In libinput the edge scrolling is hard coded to 7mm and previous attempts at making it configurable were rejected.

adisbladis··on Linux Touchpad Like MacBook Update: Touchpad Gestures Now Shipping
As someone who absolutely despises libinput (I have an unsupported use-case which will never be supported) I applaud this effort.

Thank you!

IMO (shameless plug, I'm the author) the best way to manage Python environments with Nix is poetry2nix: https://github.com/nix-community/poetry2nix.

adisbladis··on Revisiting how we put together Linux systems (2014)
These specific ideas? To the best of my knowledge, no.

Other related ideas like Nix/NixOS/Guix are solving some of the same problems outlined in the article in a much more systematic way that are not reliant on any one file system.

A bit of a shameless self-plug, but you can use both Poetry _and_ Nix! https://github.com/nix-community/poetry2nix
adisbladis··on SuperTuxKart 1.0 Release
It's very similar to what OsmAnd (free software map application for Android is doing).

The standard application from the Google Play store is limited in how many maps you can download and you can purchase the OsmAnd+ app for unlimited maps. Or... Get the same OsmAnd+ from f-droid :)

I quite like this model of charging users that are using the proprietary ecosystems. It sure worked on me, I happily paid for OsmAnd+ =)

Because it's a Linux classic. I remember playing this game over 10 years ago.
adisbladis··on In China, tattoos border on illegal – and they're his life's work
The Japanese culture is also extremely conformist and rule following. In my (limited) experience the letter of a rule is very important while the intent of the rule is not considered much.

I'd expect the rule to be enforced but I don't _really_ know.

adisbladis··on Ryzen R1000 SoC offers dual Zen and triple Vega cores with a 12-25W TDP
My girlfriend recently got one and it's a great machine!

Sure, it's no T/X-series but you are not paying for that either. I can't think of a better machine around the price point it's at.

In Hong Kong the 1080p model was on sale for ~400USD (with mechanical 500GB drive and 8GB RAM), well worth the money!

adisbladis··on In China, tattoos border on illegal – and they're his life's work
In Japan tattoos are generally banned from spa areas (which there are a lot of, pretty much all capsule hotels have one).

It was explained to me that this was a roundabout way of banning the Yakuza.

adisbladis··on Introduction to Go Modules
Go already has a concept called 'package' (think Java package).
adisbladis··on SHCL – An unholy union of Posix shell and Common Lisp
Imho all these tools like nvm, rvm etc are deeply flawed and doesn't really do their jobs all that well.

Where I work we use the nix package manager. Making sure your team is using the same version of node is just a few lines of config away:

  with (import <nixpkgs> {});

  mkShell {
    buildInputs [ nodejs-8_x ];
  }
Pinning the whole package tree is just a few more lines away and offers you full reproducibility but I omitted it for brevity.

Another upside is that this approach is language agnostic and works for all tools packaged in the nix package repository.

adisbladis··on LuLu: An open-source macOS firewall that blocks unknown outgoing connections
No sadly Opensnitch is dead. Evilsocket for whatever reason went back to OSX and I (who was the other large contributor) did not feel the motivation to work on the project anymore.

adisbladis··on An Advanced Intro to GnuPG
This is not my experience at all.. Most people I talk to about this loves their Yubikeys including myself.

I guess they have gotten a lot of flack for not being fully open source but in my experience most people are OK with this.

adisbladis··on An Advanced Intro to GnuPG
Actually it's very easy if you use git, just 2 lines of config.

  git config --global user.signingkey <your_pub_here>
  git config --global commit.gpgsign true
adisbladis··on OpenSnitch – A Linux clone of the Little Snitch application firewall
I just made an AUR package for this: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/opensnitch-git/

This is cool stuff! Wanted to have this kind of thing for a long while. Thanks for merging my changes so quickly too. Packaging would not have been possible without it.

adisbladis··on Async HTTP benchmarks on PyPy3
Pypy has pretty bad compatibility with a lot of C extensions (numpy comes to mind), this makes a lot of larger codebases unusable on Pypy. Also Python 3 compatibility has been pretty bad.

It seems like the Mozilla grant that happened a while back ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12255586 ) has really pushed Python 3 support forward a lot.

I think we may be getting closer to Pypy having more of a prescence in the server space soon if it continues to push forward at a similar pace.

adisbladis··on If I could amend PEP 8
I was the same and of the opinion that this was mostly a relic of the past.

Then I was assigned a project where this was enforced in the test suite and had to religiously follow pep8. It took a while to get used to but after a while the benefits (like fitting into everyone's editor configuration, cleaner list comprehensions etc) became apparent.

Now I'm the one to put flake8 as a part of the test suite in any new python project :)

adisbladis··on Google and ASUS Launch the $85 Chromebit, a Chrome OS Desktop on an HDMI Stick
Intel HD graphics is the GPU chipset. I have a tablet with the same Z8500 CPU with a 2560x1440 screen and it's really smooth. Supposedly it can handle 4K out of the HDMI-port but this is not something I have tried yet.
