woudsma··on Automatic supercuts on the command line with Videogrep
Very nice project!

Would be cool if it didn't need a .srt file, but that it would scan the audio for a search prase.

Edit: Never mind, I see that you can create transcriptions using vosk!

woudsma··on Syntakt – 12 Track Drum Computer and Synthesizer
There is a learning curve to these kinds of machines, so it might be hard to play with it without some practice. I’d recommend to just buy one, and experiment with it. They can provide years of creative fun!
woudsma··on Syntakt – 12 Track Drum Computer and Synthesizer
I know, but I've come to the realisation that menu-diving devices just aren't suited to me. There's too many steps and combinations of keys to remember - is the feeling I get every time. Especially when you've got lots of gear in the studio already. I'll stick to a more straightforward drum machine and modular synthesizers. I wish Elektron would've added more knobs (encoders) and faders. I was looking into combining a Faderfox (or Oktakontrol) with an Octatrack, that seems a bit more intuitive.
woudsma··on Syntakt – 12 Track Drum Computer and Synthesizer
I love the sound, capabilities and build quality of the Elektron gear (especially Digitakt / Analog Rytm2), but I dislike the amount of menu-diving that's required. I find the interface a bit of a barrier. My Roland TR-8S has dedicated knobs to most of it's features, there's less 'magic' happening. I do really miss conditional triggers and a nice built-in effects chain like in the Elektron hardware.
woudsma··on Three areas where Google Search lags behind competitors: code, cooking, travel
This button doesn’t really work for me. Often I need to click it multiple times before a video dissapears from my recommendations. Same with the ‘Not interested’ button.

I’m guessing YT works with a system that is ‘eventually consistent’, but having to click the button 2-3 times before a video disappears doesn’t seem particularly consistent to me.

woudsma··on Due to failure in the IT system, it is not possible to run any trains today
I didn’t know about Travic, thanks!
woudsma··on Custom JavaScript controls can't capture the nuance of form fields (2021)
> The browser’s built-in controls are quite sufficient.

Until you work on global webshop forms, where business/management wants hundreds of exceptions to the rules. Few examples: form input pre-fills, custom validation, auto-complete fields, fancy dropdowns, email/postcode checks that need to happen while filling in the form. I could go on. And it all should be manageable from some ancient CMS, of course.

woudsma··on Grocery delivery “dark stores” in Amsterdam
AT5 (local Amsterdam news station) recently made a video about darkstores.

woudsma··on Pure Bash Bible – A collection of pure bash alternatives to external processes
Nice to see that the author uses Shellcheck. There is a very nice Shellcheck VS Code extension that links examples of good/bad practices when writing Bash. I can definitely recommend using it if you’re writing Bash scripts!
woudsma··on I took down my Starlink dish (but haven't cancelled)
$240 per month for internet, wow. I didn't realise things were that expensive for people living in remote areas.

I'm currently paying ~$40 (converted from EUR) per month for a 100Mb/s fiber connection.

woudsma··on Two Years Is Long Enough
I try to understand the current restrictions but the numbers don’t make sense to me anymore.

In my country there have been around 21k deaths from COVID (officially). 0.9% of those deaths were people that were between 0-49 years old. That’s ~200 deaths, in two years. The age group 0-49 represents 59% of the population in my country.

I wish we’d get some numbers that we can work towards, in terms of when we can open up society again. This is a very hopeless situation.

woudsma··on Tek Fog: An App for Cyber Troops to Automate Hate, Manipulate Trends
Anecdotally, I feel that some sort of tool like this is being used on YouTube as well. I don't use other 'social media' platforms.

I've created two accounts, one where I mostly watch left-wing videos and one where I watch more right-wing videos. Mostly local news and political discussions.

From the comment sections, it seems that the left-wing videos are very often 'under attack', as if someone sees a new upload from a channel and shares the link in a group, where group members comment (and dislike, RIP) in a negative way and about semi-related topics. Mostly conservative rhetoric and lately conspiracy stuff as well. Also upvoting of similar comments and negative replies to comments from 'normal' viewers.

I don't see it that often anymore in the past few months, but last year it looked like an obvious pattern to manipulate the discussion. Maybe the comments are all from unconnected individuals, but it felt unnatural and coordinated.

Actually you don't need sophisticated tools for this, just create a WhatsApp/Telegram group with a couple hundred fanatics that share links with each other to bash/hate on.

woudsma··on Tokyo police lose 2 floppy disks containing info on public housing applicants
I use floppy disks for my Akai S2800 sampler :) Originally built around 1992 it still works (and sounds) great! Modding it to support USB is too expensive, and I quite enjoy some of the limitations it brings. You have to get creative for some things.

woudsma··on Ask HN: I feel so shallow and dumb when I see what other smart people are doing
Social media hasn't been a part of my life for years now. It feels great, I wish I could get back the hours I've spent on social media. I see why people like it and how it can be useful, but if I would want to kickstart another depression I'd install the Facebook/Instagram apps again.

My social life has improved massively since I've quit.

Simply delete your accounts permanently. You'll thank yourself later! And while you're at it, update your /etc/hosts file to block all network requests to FB ;)

woudsma··on Ask HN: I feel so shallow and dumb when I see what other smart people are doing
It doesn’t matter.

I’m a bit of a ‘positive’ existential nihilist, and I strongly feel that everything I do is not important in the greater view of existence / nature. That doesn’t mean that I think everything I do is worthless, some things are definitely worth a lot to me. It comes down to what I think is important, for me. I have a tiny window in time to experience life on earth. I want to spend that time doing things I like, preferably with people I love. The chemicals in my brain makes me feel good or bad depending on the day, but this is something I just need to realise and reflect/act on.

I’m quite creative and relatively successful (I’m not a millionaire though), my hobby’s include making things (music/art/code/design), which I enjoy a lot. That helps me find some purpose in my life.

I can be very lazy and I don’t want to put too much effort into certain things. Which is totally fine! In my youth people always told me that I was lazy, and in general that made me feel guilty throughout my life. Luckily I moved on from that state of being.

Currently I’m doing a well paid ‘bullshit’ job and I’m paying off some debts, buying music gear and searching for love. I could die tomorrow, or in 40 years. I do hope that I can stay for a while. I like humans. It’s nice to see them learn something for example. Teaching is fun.

I’m diagosed with dysthymia FYI. I hope you can find some relief in your situation in sharing your thoughts, it usually helps to process thoughts by bouncing ideas with other people. I just want to say, it doesn’t matter. Some people would love to be in your position (technically speaking), the mental part you need to figure out for yourself! Luckily humans like helping each other, so maybe try to keep communicating with others. Peace can be found!

woudsma··on Ask HN: What are you using for public documentation these days?
As others in this thread have mentioned, Docusaurus is really good. It was very easy to add search with Algolia and meta tags for SEO as well.
woudsma··on Ask HN: Solo-preneurs, how do you DevOps to save time?
Not a solo-preneur, but I’ve had great experiences so far with Dokku, an open-source Heroku clone. I’m running ~40 apps on my single VPS since a couple of years. I use it in combination with Github Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines and Gitlab CI. I still feel very flexible working with Dockerfiles and different cloud services. I’ve only had to update the dokku-letsencrypt plugin a couple of times in the past 5 years. Note that I haven’t had to protect important databases with PII for example.
woudsma··on Show HN: OurBoard – free and open source online whiteboard
Heroku error :) That was fast.

Edit: never mind, back up!

woudsma··on When Facebook went down this week, traffic to news sites went up
They would, there are lots of local online platforms where they can have an online presence. In my country it's services like TakeAway, Deliveroo, Uber Eats that bring in a lot of revenue for smaller restaurants. If you don't want to hire a developer or local web development agency you can use Wix or any of the other website builders to create a small website for your business. If your company has a recognisable name, it's easy enough to get a fine ranking in Google's search results. I think we'd do fine without Facebook.
woudsma··on Bitcoin's growing e-waste problem
Nature doesn't care, life will continue to exist. Humans deserve nothing, we're only given a slice of time. Life on earth is both beautiful and merciless. We're involuntary actors in a fractal universe.

I do hope that we can develop effective methods to combat climate change so that we can enjoy clean water and a roof above our heads for a bit longer. It would be a shame if our civilisation disappears without a trace, lost forever to entropy. It would be nice to leave something behind, even though our existence is probably less meaningful than we tell ourselves.

I'm not unhappy, I feel blessed for being here and now. The only thing I'm fed up with is people blatantly lying, without repercussions. Big corporations have fucked up the climate by lying and they want me, the average citizen, to feel guilty of my carbon footprint.

We don't deserve these lies.

woudsma··on Ask HN: Any successful transitions from a tech/IT career to working in the arts?
The demoscene is fantastic, it’s just very math-heavy. I love shaders and the speed of GPU’s/parallel processing, but learning to write GLSL is hard especially when you haven’t had much math education. (Which is often the case for art students).

That’s also the reason why I mentioned Processing. It’s one of the few programming languages that’s very accesible for non-beta students because of it’s very simple and visual documentation.

woudsma··on Ask HN: Any successful transitions from a tech/IT career to working in the arts?
I’ve done the opposite, I switched from arts to tech. Being able to use programming to create art is fantastic. I can clearly remember the days where creating images _always_ was a manual task (I used Adobe Photoshop at the time). Now I would use Processing, Python, Node.js or look into Adobe scripts whenever I have to make graphics that involve some kind of automation. I wish I had that knowledge/skill back when I studied at my art academy.

Your question is about transitioning from tech to arts though, so I can only reply with the steps that I would take (with my currrent knowledge).

Art schools/academies often have part-time courses, or an ‘evening school’. My mom -a nurse by trade- actually graduated from a renowned art academy two years ago, by finishing the part-time course. Don’t be fooled by the term ‘part-time’ though, as any good art academy course takes a lot of time and effort. I’m glad I’ve got my degree. My current tech job is so much easier than studying at an art school.

I would strongly recommend that you find a good course at a good school and go for it. Online courses cannot replicate a good arts education. The in-person examinations and presentations are very valuable. Also consider moving (abroad) to find a good school if there are none near to you.

Your last sentence resonates with me, do it now while you’re still young! :)

I’ve worked as a coding teacher at an art academy, teaching graphic design students, FYI.

woudsma··on ASML, a $300B Dutch firm, makes the machines that make semiconductors
Apparently the machines are pretty hard to replicate, the company (ASML) has had to deal with a couple of corporate espionage cases in the past[0].

I'd really like this as well. Open-source it.

Modern social media platforms are highly profitable AI-accelerated mass manipulation systems, on steroids. These companies have little incentive and are very reluctant to changing their 'winning formula', obviously.

Misinformation is rampant and even rewarded as studies have shown repeatedly. Continuous exposure to these centralised feeds providing an infinite amount of content - managed by barely regulated for-profit companies - is worrying.

Also most platforms are based in the US, a country that has completely different social/cultural views (and laws) compared to the rest of the world. I'm glad I am not a US citizen for example. Still these platforms are being used worldwide, so I think that decisions made about the 'feed algorithm(s)' can have a big social/cultural impact on other countries. More studies (and regulation, taxes) are probably a good idea.

woudsma··on U.S. Sees Ongoing Spike in Gun, Ammo Sales: 'I've Never Seen Anything Like It'
> Once someone owns a gun, or a household has a gun with-in it, there are all sorts of disasters that can now occur that were not possible without one being present.

Amen. The 'upsides' of owning a gun don't outweigh the horrible potential consequences for myself and others around me. I'm really glad that guns are not as prominent in my country compared to the US.

woudsma··on Facebook users said no to tracking, and now advertisers are panicking
I don't mind to pay for privacy and transparency. FB and other platforms are hoarding and abusing highly personal information for profit, they're parasites.
