werkjohann··on California Businesses Stop Hiring
In a way, they are. E.g. look at Apple, which is relocating a ton of roles to the San Diego area (and Seattle some).
werkjohann··on Ask HN: What photo sharing solution should we use for our destination wedding?
I wouldn’t call Shared Albums in Apple Photos high quality (and certainly not original quality). Unlike in Google Photos, sharing to Apple’s Shared Albums creates a separate scaled down copy of the photo instead of creating permissions to see the original photo.

It’s super frustrating.

werkjohann··on Why the rate of single men in the US looking for dates has declined
Why is the thought of other people finding happiness in a way different from you “gut-wrenching”? Such a strong emotional reaction to a lifestyle that has no direct impact on you doesn’t seem healthy.
werkjohann··on Blind people won the right to break eBook DRM, but they'll have to do it again
This is terrible, and while IANAL I’m confused why it doesn’t fall under ADA requirements to provide accessible versions of materials - especially school materials.

Also, can people really claim with a straight face that running a book through text-to-speech is the same as a real audiobook (that’s often a voice actor, right?)?

werkjohann··on Facebook Declared War on Apple, and It Just May Signal the End of Facebook
Anecdotal, but I’ve seen several folks get offers from FB and other big tech, and I’ve seen FB throw much more money at people. They also have better perks.

I think they know they need to use money to overcome their reputation.

Harder is taking control of the GitHub project where the bug tracker lives and people are used to sending patches.

werkjohann··on Public and private class fields
I'm curious, is JS your primary language? Getters and setters have been around since ~2010 (other languages also make heavy use of them, like Obj-C). I suspect that you only see this as "invisible" because you first learned a language that didn't have getters/setters (and if you started with modern JS, or Obj-C the fact that properties aren't "dumb" would just be a given). Thoughts?
werkjohann··on Javascript Fundamentals: ‘this’ keyword
JavaScript Fundamentals: it’s “JavaScript”, not “Javascript” :P
werkjohann··on Apple staffers reportedly rebelling against open office plan at new HQ (2017)
Not to mention being uncomfortable if worn constantly, and the distraction of whatever you play.
werkjohann··on “Buying this elsewhere” gone from Amazon Wish Lists
Awkwardly, it's still noted as a feature on https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=aw?...
werkjohann··on Ask HN: What tools have most helped your day-to-day productivity?
Walls. They block distractions to a number of senses: audio, light, smell.
werkjohann··on Guide to Sharing with Apple Photos
Author here. Sharing the photos and videos you take on your iPhone is a lot more complicated than people might imagine. Chances are you’ve shared photos with someone and unknowingly made a compromise that you didn’t intend to. After exhaustive testing of the various ways of sharing from the Apple Photos apps, I put together this flow chart so that people can make conscious choices about how they share photos.
