warp_factor··on Unlimited Google Drive storage by splitting binary files into base64
The fact that this is even a remote possibility should worry everyone of the ugly monopoly that Google became.

I found myself in a similar situation a couple months ago. An android App falsely charged me on the Play store. After trying to contact Google for multiple weeks I gave up and disputed the charge on my credit card. This resulted in Google coming after me for 8.99$ and threatening me to close all my Google accounts including gmail, calendar, photos, drive and everything I rely daily in Google.

That was a wake-up call for me. I decided to move everything OUT of Google. That company got too much power, it should worry way more people.

warp_factor··on Show HN: 30 Hour Jobs – a job board for shorter work weeks
The issue is that when you work 30 hours you are still really working with the same output as 40 hours. You will basically squeeze the 5 days into 4.

I honestly feel it's easier to find a regular job and work from home 1 or 2 days a week and manage your week in such a way that you perform all your tasks in 4 days.

warp_factor··on Uber's Losses Reach Double Digits in IPO Debut
The vast majority of IPOs are successful and pop on opening.

Failing IPOs are the exception , not the norm. There were two very high profile failure lately (Uber and Lyft) so I understand why you are feeling so though

warp_factor··on Uber’s underwater investors
The fundamental question is if a product that can exist without an expensive component (lidar) will ever be of the same quality as the one with it.
warp_factor··on Uber’s underwater investors
I wish but unfortunately I think Uber became "too big to fail". When there is that much VC and corporate money behind an entity you can be sure that the rules of the game will be bent so that the big players don't lose to much of their chips.
warp_factor··on Uber’s underwater investors
the whole deck of cards is crumbling and the ones losing money right now are the little investors that bought Uber on IPO day because of the hype.
warp_factor··on Uber’s underwater investors
Why is Lidar the wrong horse? Because Elon Musk made a slideshow and you drank the Koolaid?

I don't like Uber but as far as autonomous driving is involved, Uber and Waymo use Lidar AND camera arrays versus Tesla only using camera arrays. I don't see at all how that is a deal breaker.

warp_factor··on Lyft’s revenues double, losses quintuple and prospects darken
Why would the bank need to hedge their exposure? Isn't part of their job to create those type of synthetic products based on risk profiles and trade them accordingly?

They might have edged their position by issuing an actual short, I'm only saying they don't necessarily have to.

warp_factor··on Uber opens at $42 per share
In 5 years I expect the MarketCap to be around 10B$ max. If Self Driving cars are a thing then even less than that.

their customer base will be richer//business people ready to pay higher sustainable prices for rides.

warp_factor··on Uber opens at $42 per share
This was used as a lame excuse.

Uber had actually something to win as you said because of all the free cash floating around and the fact that Uber is completely out of China.

warp_factor··on Uber opens at $42 per share
probably not bankrupt, but they will basically become a small ride hailing company with high prices. This will result in their stock falling dramatically.
warp_factor··on Lyft’s revenues double, losses quintuple and prospects darken
Analysts predict where the stock is going in the short term based on "sentiments" and "emotion". I wouldn't bet anything on them.
warp_factor··on Lyft’s revenues double, losses quintuple and prospects darken
My understanding of that Soros trade is that it was not an actual short (the product was not public), but it was a synthetic product that was correlated on the Lyft ticker, that probably behaved like a Short but wasn't a short.
warp_factor··on Uber prices blockbuster IPO conservatively to raise $8.1B
I'm tired of this fallacy. Amazon was losing money only because it was expanding. They could have stopped expanding and they would have made money instantly.

Uber on the other hand is losing money because they are actively competing. They cannot be in business without losing that money, that's where it's scary

warp_factor··on GM Cruise raises $1.15B at a $19B valuation from Softbank and Honda
Fine. They are at the point where they can eventually record a video on a fairly easy, almost empty, perfect condition, predefined suburban track. Noone knows how many attempts that video took.

This is the point that Waymo reached in 2012 if I remember correctly.

warp_factor··on GM lays off engineer who helped expose VW’s diesel fraud
Sure, you will pay 5-6k$ in rent (let's even say 8k$). But since you are making 25k$ a month after tax instead of 10k$, you are still coming ahead. Unless if you also need to buy a Tesla Model S like your cool neighbors.
warp_factor··on GM lays off engineer who helped expose VW’s diesel fraud
I'm pretty sure that the person you reply to had a crazy lifestyle inflation and is now unable to live "simply" again with less than 20k$ a month. This is everything that MMM warns about.
warp_factor··on GM Cruise raises $1.15B at a $19B valuation from Softbank and Honda
What do you mean Tesla is the most transparent player? They absolutely never showed anything else than slides and a 2 minute video. That's probably the least transparent from all the big players. You can go to Mountain View and see cars running right now. Or go to Phoenix and get into a Waymo car.

Again you got ahead of yourself with the Tesla hype.

warp_factor··on GM’s self-driving division Cruise raises another $1.15B
What advantage exactly? Yes they can get some data from some cars sometimes. They definitely don't have the infrastructure to manage the terrabytes per hour that the other classical players generate.

They might have an advantage in 15 years, when you don't need a lidar because cameras will be good enough

warp_factor··on GM Cruise raises $1.15B at a $19B valuation from Softbank and Honda
This is my feeling also. Tesla is absolutely nowhere, but they keep making noise and announcements. And what is amazing is that it works. Most people think Tesla is up there with the other self driving car companies
warp_factor··on GM’s self-driving division Cruise raises another $1.15B
Why would anyone take Tesla seriously? Anyone that follows the field know they are far far behind the big ones doing this for years (Waymo, Cruise, Zoox,...).

They did a huge PR//Marketing push, but didn't show anything yet.

warp_factor··on Repair delays for Tesla owners
reading the comments, I'm really amazed to see so many owners that complain about lengthy delays, but are "ready to put with it" because they want Tesla to succeed.

This would never fly for any other car companies.

Once more, it confirms to me that people buy a Tesla as a symbol//cult more than as a vehicle. Teslafans want to be recognized as those next level earth-friendly yuppies socialites. And it really scares me to see how many here go blindly with it.

warp_factor··on On Perks
free lunch is also good economically though, without free lunch most employees spend 1+ hours outside the company.

With free lunch, most employee spend less than 25 minutes eating, then going back directly to work.

warp_factor··on JetBlue explains to a passenger how it got a photo of her face
you would have passport control if you exited the country through some other non conventional ways.

The airlines are giving out all the information, that's why there is no need to do an exit passport control.

warp_factor··on Tesla Model 3 Effect – Chevy Dealers Discount 2019 Bolt by Almost $10k
I'm a big believer in electric vehicles, and it really frustrates me that the Bolt is unknown to the general public.

This car is a gem. Cheaper than a Tesla M3, and available before.

It shows once more that car buying is more about to be in a cult//group than really about the car itself. 90% of the attraction of the Model3 is that people will think you are somehow hype.

warp_factor··on Tesla Model 3 Effect – Chevy Dealers Discount 2019 Bolt by Almost $10k
did you even try the bolt? It would have been 10k less than yours, and based on the review not that far away in term of comfort//performance etc.

But I bet you didn't, because you don't really care. you wanted a Tesla because it's a hype car.

warp_factor··on Belgian programmer solves MIT’s 20-year-old time capsule cryptographic puzzle
That's why I love HackerNews, you can meet those type of interesting personalities and ask them questions right here!

Can you tell us a bit more about your self-taught background? What do you do for a living? How did you hear about the challenge?

warp_factor··on The Airbnb Invasion of Barcelona
the biggest issue I see with Airbnb is that it favors a small subset of tenants and makes it worse for pretty much everyone else.

Running an Airbnb is insanely profitable for the tenant and it is pretty much hell for everyone else living next to it. Ask neighbours of Airbnbs, they will all complain that it brings a lot of noise, people partying in the middle of the night etc.

My solution to this is that the cities should tax Airbnbs at a very high level. Probably upwards of 50%. There is a reason why hotels are built in specific places in cities, and why they have a frontdesks etc.

warp_factor··on A crowd-sourced social media swarm that is betting Tesla will crash
This comment is deeply annoying as I happen to know the self driving field.

Tesla is the most hyped and least proved contender. They moved the conversation around the AI chip but that doesn't matter compared to the algorithms that runs on it! Waymo and Cruise are years in front but mask managed to hype you and make you drink koolaid in such a way that you know think they are the leaders.

This is laughable.

warp_factor··on People Who Claim to Work 75-Hour Weeks Usually Only Work About 50 Hours
I met a couple subgroup of people that were weirdly proud of working a lot. And I caught a lot of them inflating their work hours (for example pretending they work 70 while they work a normal 40). To them it was a way to show off how important they supposedly are.

I really think that most people that pretend to work > 40 hours a week are not really working those hours. They might stay a lot at the office but are usually the least productive people ever
