timdiggerm··on Kodak factory tour: How does Kodak make film? [video]
I guess you were unaware of the fact that he worked in missile testing & development for years and years?
timdiggerm··on Ask HN: What does 12:00 AM mean?
I think, though, that your example is less convincing, since the hour changes.
timdiggerm··on Facebook approved paid ads inciting violence against the Rohingya
It's not asinine, it just depends on if you value ethics or growth.
timdiggerm··on Overtone is live programmable music and visualization
The website header makes it look like this is called Covertone
timdiggerm··on Tell HN: Did you know you can negotiate price on many things?
The trick there, of course, is that you have to not want some of the stuff that sells out
timdiggerm··on Cities should not pay for new stadiums
Here in Montgomery County, MD, I am unaware of any high schools with a Field House. The idea that they're standard is just completely bizarre to me.
timdiggerm··on Electric fields, not individual neurons, may hold information in memory: study
It's true, blind people are only considered disabled because of sighted people.

I am not sure this is the convincing argument you think it is, however.

timdiggerm··on Computer Randomly Plays Classical Music (2007)
You think they would have?
timdiggerm··on Mother Earth Mother Board (1996)
I dunno, the Internet Archive has no problem hosting other issues from the same year
timdiggerm··on Mother Earth Mother Board (1996)
Sadly, although the Internet Archive has several of that year's Wired issues scanned, they do not appear to have December.

You can read it in a collection of his writings (https://archive.org/details/someremarksessay00step/page/120/...) but that's not much different (and less accessible) than the link on this post.

timdiggerm··on Gmail’s fake loading indicator (2020)
But why? Why is that important?
timdiggerm··on Project SPHINX – When the USSR tried to change the computer (2019)
The design is cool, but was any of it actually functional at all?
timdiggerm··on Ex-US President Donald Trump announces social media site
This is amusing, given that the Soviet newspaper was Pravda, or "Truth"
timdiggerm··on A River Reawakened
This is beautiful writing, worthy of the beautiful Olympic Peninsula, but the lines about "when the world was young" are misguided & misleading. It's only something closer to "when the world was as-yet unoppressed by foolish industrialism" or something like that.
timdiggerm··on Pacific islanders likely found Antarctica first: study
If there were Roman stories of reaching a land across the sea that sounded a lot like North America, then you'd be right.
timdiggerm··on A martian’s review of The Martian (2015)
In his second book, Artemis, Weir manages to build a somewhat more complex character...but with the exact same voice as Watney. It's disappointing.
timdiggerm··on Siemens acquires Supplyframe, owners of Hackaday and Tindie
You've conflated might with right, I think. It's pretty clear the comment you're replying to was not judging this on financial terms.
timdiggerm··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
I mean, it worked out great for the Instagram guys, right?
timdiggerm··on Highest French court reclassifies Uber drivers as employees
...aren't taxi drivers employees?
timdiggerm··on Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Tolkien Elves
I think it's more just that because everyone assumes they have pointy ears, it's good to point out that the text doesn't say so. It's good to point out common assumptions, as it helps us realize the unconscious biases we bring to a text.
timdiggerm··on In the 1970s, NYC Dabbled in Carpeted Subway Trains
Update: They have actually received all of the 7000 series cars, and it's 60% of the fleet.

timdiggerm··on In the 1970s, NYC Dabbled in Carpeted Subway Trains
Yes, but it's less than half the active rolling stock. 538 vs 648 of the 7000 series, and and there are still 100 more 7000 series cars yet to arrive, which will lead to more retirement of the older cars. Once the 8000 series starts arriving in 2024, the end of carpeted trains (which will by then be...I dunno, less than a third of the cars?) will be very near.

timdiggerm··on Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1834)
I've heard of them, but never actually heard their music.
timdiggerm··on Microsoft urged: Open-source Windows 7 to 'undo past wrongs'
That would be very-FSF of them.
timdiggerm··on The Magical Excel 97 Far East Language Build Screwdriver
Just that it's funny
timdiggerm··on Is Perl 6 Being Renamed?
Okay, but is it a good, useful programming language? In some ways, the long development timeline suggests a slower, more stable way of doing language changes that appeals a lot to me.
timdiggerm··on The new Dropbox
At least the interface is still the same colors, instead of the gross palette of the blog and their rebrand.
timdiggerm··on Firefox: The Evolution of a Brand
This is probably a good move, as "Firefox" has much better name recognition than "Mozilla"
timdiggerm··on Robocrop: world's first raspberry-picking robot set to work
This is true for any enforcement of laws though?
timdiggerm··on IQ rates are dropping in many developed countries
Why do you use "should" instead of "would"?
