timdiggerm··on Pirating the Pirates
Are you speaking purely of the technical difference, or do you know what that particular community calls itself?
timdiggerm··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
It doesn't have to, sure, maybe, but what indication do you see that the owners of these companies have any future in mind other than one in which they are in control of the majority of the wealth and power? These are private companies, not publicly owned infrastructure.
timdiggerm··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
We need a legal structure to make companies liable for the actions of the agents they've made.
timdiggerm··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
> I consider OpenAI to be as economically motivated as any other actor in this space and playing around with user data like that would destroy their business.

It's a gamble that this would be overlooked compared to the reputation they build for solving the thing

timdiggerm··on Mechanical Watch (2022)
It's been more than a year since his last post. Anyone know what's up?
timdiggerm··on Rumors of my death are slightly exaggerated
You know, he's the perfect subject for a kind of Chuck-Norris-joke-esque thing
timdiggerm··on Canvas online again as ShinyHunters threatens to leak schools’ data
What a failure of university leadership to allow or even encourage that practice
timdiggerm··on Southwest Headquarters Tour
> Ask them about the chickens hanging from the bottom.

Maybe you should tell me about the chickens, since I am unlikely to ever get to ask anyone at Southwest HQ.

The periodic table in the "Create Everything At Once" collage is not so impressive.

What did you think it was before you read this brief Wikipedia article?
timdiggerm··on New bill would let New Yorkers hang solar panels from windows
> Our electricity is unmetered and included in our rent. My unit has an individual circuit breaker box, but how would solar power be fed into such a system

I don't understand. These systems just plug into wall outlets. The big difference is that, instead of saving yourself money, you'd be saving your landlady money on the bill.

timdiggerm··on Emperor penguin and Antarctic fur seal now endangered
It's not as though people intentionally made these endangered because they have insufficient love for penguins. We have unintentionally done it because we have insufficient love (care) for them and many, many other things, creatures, people, etc.
timdiggerm··on Kindle to end store downloads and registering for 1st-5th gen kindles in May
Yeah but HN commenters are not a representative sample of the ebook consumer base
timdiggerm··on We found an undocumented bug in the Apollo 11 guidance computer code
It's not a shallow dismissal; it's a dismissal for good reason. It's tangential to the topic, but not to HN overall. It's only curmudgeonly if you assume AI-written posts are the inevitable and good future (aka begging the question). I really don't know how it's "sneering", so I won't address that.

So you're saying Pangram isn't worth much?
timdiggerm··on I'm Getting a Whiff of Iain Banks' Culture
The key line "I’m getting a similar sense for the recent US foreign interventions and wars. They all seem to work slightly better than they should."

There is no measurement of efficacy here. It feels like these things are working better because the US military is now doing big public things, but that is not necessarily a good change over not-doing-big-public-things.

Wait where does the idea of consciousness enter this? AGI doesn't need to be conscious.
timdiggerm··on Is beef tallow making a comeback?
It's not a liquid, but it's pretty soft.

But can he speak Italian lawn games?
timdiggerm··on The writing is on the wall for handwriting recognition
For that to be relevant to this post, they would need to write with secretary hand.
timdiggerm··on A Spectral-Geometric Proof of the Riemann Hypothesis
I look forward, should this prove correct, to the explainers from Quanta, Numberphile, etc.
timdiggerm··on Laptops with Stickers
The edginess was, at the core of it, what made them fun in the first place
timdiggerm··on Laptops with Stickers
You're right, you just can't make memories without injecting ink into your skin.
timdiggerm··on Laptops with Stickers
Right, which tells us that what was fun about it was feeling cool for doing something unusual.
timdiggerm··on The next chapter of the Microsoft–OpenAI partnership
> Progress in AI is happening faster than ever before

Is it happening faster than it was six months ago? a year ago?

timdiggerm··on Sora 2
Yeah, and definitely not AITok
timdiggerm··on Sora 2
That's interesting, but how many people are actually going to just scroll and watch these (thereby generating ad revenue)?
