stretchwithme··on Most airlines face bankruptcy by end of May, industry body warns
I am ok with putting these airlines on life support until things get back to normal, but ONLY if airlines are required to get insurance or build a rainy day fund to handle similar future events. And only if shareholders and bondholders are not bailed out.

There are risks in this business and lenders and shareholders should have already taken that into account when they make their decisions. It's not the job of government to handle these risks.

We need to keep this industry going but also start to be more responsible about risk. And that will mean moderately higher ticket prices.

stretchwithme··on Ask HN: Was the Y2K crisis real?
An avoidable problem can become real if you don't take the actions required to avoid it.
stretchwithme··on New Bill Would Give Nearly Every Californian $1,000/Month
Oh, there is none. Government is as pure as the driven snow here.
stretchwithme··on The economics of all-you-can-eat buffets
A friend of mine, not a native speaker, calls them "eat all you can" buffets.
stretchwithme··on Volkswagen exec admits full self-driving cars 'may never happen'
It will happen. When it will happen is impossible to predict.

But I am pretty sure it will happen within 20 years. 5 years? Unlikely.

In any case, it will require much better testing than just letting it learn on the street. A vehicle should be able to deal with a snow covered road in the dark going down a hill with babies crawling across the road.

And EMP-induced total electrical failure. No sense in a million people getting injured at once, should that ever happen. Emergency brakes should quickly engage in a predictable way when power is lost.

stretchwithme··on Comac engineers miscalculated the forces that would be placed on the engines
Probably why Idiocracy will not come to pass. And truly idiotic civilization will succumb to its competitors.

All the more reason to avoid a single global government. Besides never being able to escape tyranny.

stretchwithme··on The case for being a medical conservative
omg. If you did everything a doctor suggests you do without a critical ear, you'll probably die younger.

You just care an lot more about the results and have more time to focus on researching just one person's condition.

But you're also a lot more likely to be kidding yourself than a medical professional is. But I think sometimes they just keep that to themselves sometimes because it's too hard to challenge an idea a patient has locked on to.

No easy answers.

stretchwithme··on Products I Wish Existed
I would like to see security get into guarding the entrances of convenience stores using AI. If someone could potentially robbing the store, wearing a mask or carrying a gun, why should the door remain unlocked?

Lock it, alert a human at the company to review the situation and either open the door for them or call the police. Loop in the clerk if the network goes down.

Also, along these lines, created an AI doorman for a building, with a similar review process. Have the residents also help with reviews if the network is done.

stretchwithme··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions? (2010)
I suppose an army of inept bots could throw me off.
stretchwithme··on Store the proof of a webpage saved with SingleFile in Bitcoin
This sort of thing is going to become very important for photos and videos. Being able to prove that an original earlier unaltered version of a video exists will allow us to reject AI-altered fake videos.

Indeed, once it becomes commonplace, videos that do not have a blockchain record recorded close to creation time will be suspect. The less time an AI has to alter a video, the less likely alteration is.

stretchwithme··on Black boys don’t need more discipline, they need mentors (2018)
I agree with that. At some primitive level, I think we see our fathers as protector and provider. When he's not around, the pressure is really on boys to assume that role. And so it without the maturity and tools that adults have.

My father moved out when I was 14 and, although he was never far away and visited all the time, I was pretty angry about. For years. It really wasn't even his fault.

It is not just an issue for black boys, of course. Rates of fatherless homes have been rising in the US for whites and hispanics too.

stretchwithme··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions? (2010)
I predict by 2029 Hacker News will be overrun with AI bots and nobody will be to identify them.
stretchwithme··on Apple's products are getting harder to use, ignore principles of design (2015)
I really doubt Steve Jobs would have given the touch bar a green light.
stretchwithme··on Kansas City is first major city in U.S. to offer no-cost public transportation
Singapore has a better system. They force you to save, but it's your money. You can use it to buy a home.

So you don't start getting it back when you're old. It can serve you much earlier.

I think the rate of home ownership there is over 90%.

stretchwithme··on Apple's products are getting harder to use, ignore principles of design (2015)
One of the biggest time wasting annoyances Apple has created is the touch bar virtual escape key. I'm triggering it constantly. How did they not know this was a problem before they brought it to market?

Thankfully, they're going back to a real escape key in the latest MacBook Pro.

And what happened to the backlit Apple on the lid? Another sacrifice to the god of thinness?

Like getting rid of the Kensington security slot. My first MacBook had that and I used it with a cable lock in coffee shops. Also sacrificed to eliminate size and weight, I suppose.

stretchwithme··on Reasons Why Job Seekers Are Not Given Feedback
Giving people feedback is not always a good idea. Sometimes the information just helps them to hide something from the next person they encounter.

This is true in many domains, I think. You should not explain to the conman how you saw through his lies. That will help him fix that and con more people.

You shouldn't tell people in your dating profile what turns you off. They'll just avoid revealing they have a third arm if that's one of your turn offs.

I think interviewers have incentive to help people they like but no incentive to help someone they don't think they want to see in the candidate pool down the road.

Maybe they will point you to things you can learn if it will make you a better candidate but not if will just help you tune your pitch.

stretchwithme··on Kansas City is first major city in U.S. to offer no-cost public transportation
I'd rather see nothing being subsidized.

If you want to help the poor afford public transit, lower their taxes. Maybe not taking a substantial their working capital and giving it back to them when their old isn't such a bright idea either.

stretchwithme··on America’s Air Quality Worsens, Ending Years of Gains, Study Says
It's probably a lot due to the California fires. Last November we had the worst air quality I've seen since I moved here in 93.
stretchwithme··on Can You Copyright Work Made by Artificial Intelligence?
I think the intellectual component to randomly generated content is distinguishing between the good and the bad. And there's a lot of bad.
stretchwithme··on Can You Copyright Work Made by Artificial Intelligence?
Creating an intelligible work through a random process takes a really long time. It took Earth hundreds of millions of years.
stretchwithme··on Can You Copyright Work Made by Artificial Intelligence?
Why not? You can hire a human to make something for you and you can own the copyright to that work. You certainly are financing the creation of a work made by an AI.

And an AI isn't a person, legal or otherwise.

stretchwithme··on What a Year at a Mechanic Shop Taught Me About Process (2016)
I prefer to call all human inventions technology, because even if a technology is old, it's still serving its purpose. Even if we're taking it for granted.

Plumbing put us all out of the water carrying business. But without it, daily life would be very, very different.

Google's definition of technology is interesting. - the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. - machinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge.

I guess technology is the process of making technology. Pipes are a technology, but most of technology is over.

But it also sounds like technology when a plumber is applying his knowledge of metal and fire and gravity to solve a new problem.

stretchwithme··on Why the Government Isn't a Bigger Version of a Startup
How much currency a country prints and how much it borrows are two different things.
stretchwithme··on Why the Government Isn't a Bigger Version of a Startup
I think you're confusing money with resources. Money is a medium of exchange. The resources are real.

Governments frequently consume more resources than they can purchase with the taxes they collect.

Yes, they could just print all the money they could ever need. And when they do, inflation runs wild. Then a government cannot borrow in its own currency because no one will trust it. Or it must pay a high rate.

The US government is in a unique situation. It's been able to print much more than a government normally could because it is the most trusted reserve currency in a rapidly globalizing world. Trillions of dollars are held overseas. And if the dollar loses that role, you will see a lot of inflation as those dollars return to the US. Even if it doesn't lose that role and the world just stops taking additional dollars, the US would have to print less to keep the same rate of inflation.

Most governments don't fall into this category. And no country is in this category forever.

A country's currency is really just another form of debt. And while it may never run out, the more it prints, the more it declines in value. It's not debt people can collect on, but the law of supply and demand will certainly collect on this debt.

And it's also a tax, a tax on savings. And the country could remove dollars from circulation, thereby reducing this debt and reversing the decline in the value of savings.

stretchwithme··on Why the Government Isn't a Bigger Version of a Startup
And many who talk about how we should gladly pay our taxes get or figure they would get more than they pay in if everybody would happily pay as much as they possibly could.

Not that the amount of taxes paid ever stopped a government from trying borrow and spend way more than that.

stretchwithme··on Why the Government Isn't a Bigger Version of a Startup
Why would anyone think that?

A startup can't coerce people to become its customers. A startup has to convince individuals to part with their money voluntarily.

stretchwithme··on Effects of Vitamin D and Omega-3 Fatty Acid on Biomarkers of Inflammation
Delay eating until you are actually hungry in the morning and avoid sugar or carbs for as long as you can throughout the day.

Just eating sugar makes you crave sugar. Don't even add it to coffee.

stretchwithme··on Is Inequality Inevitable?
Income inequality is a sign that an economy is functioning properly. For people vary greatly in their talents, ambition, tolerance for risk, vision. Some can lead, delegate and inspire, while others cannot.

Some are great at collaboration, others love confronting difficult challenges. Some are great at squeezing suppliers and others good at pushing people to adopt the next wave of technology. Some know exactly what people want and others are incredibly creative. Some never stop learning.

Some do none of the above and only want everything defined for them with no risks or growth required.

How could anyone analyze all of this incredible variability and decide whether people get too much money for their contributions?

Income inequality rewards the development of all of those qualities.
