stefan_kendall··on Dogecoin decides to allow annual inflation of 5 billion coins each year, forever
Except that the price of doge was driven up by individuals believing they weren't buying into an inflatable currency. The fact that this article got upvotes and the comments around indicate that people are gonna pull out.
stefan_kendall··on How in-app purchases have destroyed the game industry
You are unique in this. They would get almost no sales and destroyed in reviews if they charged the real price of the game ($20).

Instead, they use IAP. Some users buy nothing, some buy the $69.99 game, and on average everyone pays $20.

stefan_kendall··on Rackspace’s Policy On Contributing To Open Source
So only open source work doesn't need to go through a lawyer?

"You can claim a copyright, but only if you couldn't be successful enough to make money."

Sounds like a big "fuck you" to me. Other corporations just ignore side projects outside the problem domain of the business. By making this statement explicitly permitting open-source, it feels like the screws are setup for the moment someone wants to make money.

stefan_kendall··on Vinod Khosla Wants Californians To Keep Out of Martins Beach
It's his property. And the state is threatening to reject his development permits if he doesn't cave to their will.

Fuck the city government. I hope he can keep his private land private.

stefan_kendall··on How to stop giving a f**k what people think.
I saw the censored fuck and immediately couldn't see anything else.

Fucking have a goddamned fucking opinion, or don't. Who is the author trying to impress with censorship? Asterisks won't get you more retweets.

stefan_kendall··on Take Buffett's Billion
Calipari makes 5.2 last I checked, and he's tied into advertising all across kentucky.
stefan_kendall··on South Korea bans unremovable mobile bloatware
My iPhone doesn't. Probably a market effect.
stefan_kendall··on Buying a laptop, check if it has nVidia Optimus, its purpose is infuriate you
Bootcamp can even install Windows to your macbook pro from an ISO. Works great.
stefan_kendall··on This is What it's Like to Be a Woman at a Bitcoin Meetup
Immediately becoming physical is a valid showing of sexual interest. If she wasn't interested, she should have stopped it immediately.

I've had it go both ways and end in sex, although never in a professional setting.

stefan_kendall··on Demonstration at Home of Google Developer. Google Bus Blocked in Berkeley
But aside from all the great free services google provides, and the money it has poured into its offices and the surrounding area, what has it done?

What have the Romans ever done for us?!

stefan_kendall··on Demonstration at Home of Google Developer. Google Bus Blocked in Berkeley
It is extremely difficult to legally buy and conceal a handgun that conforms to California law. You also can't pickpocket a gun to anyone carrying it appropriately.

Try to take a gun from a cop and see what happens.

stefan_kendall··on New Year, New CEO for GitHub
The code review pales in comparison to Crucible. Vertical diffs only, can't ignore whitespace without losing the ability to comment, and there's no fast navigation through files.
stefan_kendall··on Apparently It’s OK For iOS Apps To Ask For Your Apple ID And Password
Everyone I know with family members tries to share a single login across all devices to share purchases.
stefan_kendall··on CarWoo is shutting down
Cars are commodities, and should not be sold by salesman on commission. I'm not buying another car until mine falls apart.
stefan_kendall··on Crowded Out of Ivory Tower, Adjuncts See a Life Less Lofty
Yes, I do not wish to finance someone else's dream. I could have told this guy 20 years ago that his life plan was awful and going to lead to financial hardship.
stefan_kendall··on Crowded Out of Ivory Tower, Adjuncts See a Life Less Lofty
Different markets.

Demand for the jobs is high, and supply is low. This keeps pay low.

Compare to tuition. Demand has been increasing over the last decade, and supply has remained relatively fixed or grown slowly. As more students seek to acquire trash art history degrees, price has risen to match the demand.

stefan_kendall··on Our 1 week side project is a Best New App on the Mac Appstore - what now?
In app purchase. Build out some premium feature and charge for it. You have the install base.

Unlike up-front sales, in-app purchases pay out as a function of your install base over time, instead of purely just the sales numbers.

That said, 1500/day isn't all that much, but you can make a good bit of money with the right up-sells.

stefan_kendall··on Why Does A Good Kettle Cost $90+?
Why does an "X" cost "$Y+"?

Because that's the price the market will bear for X. Cost has nothing to do with it. If I could sell you a kettle for $100,000 that cost me $100 to build, I would absolutely do it.

stefan_kendall··on Show HN: Ken, Curation of best programming news on the Internet
Painfully slow, and now throwing 404s. Devs get hard-ons for fat client front-ends when web servers since the early 90s have been able to trivially serve up this kind of content.
stefan_kendall··on Why rampant video game sales are bad for players
More users is not always a good thing. Support costs increase linearly for a while with the user base, and then I'd suppose superlinearly.

Apple has departments of people dedicated only to taking phone calls.

I would rather have 10 users at $10,000 each than 100,000 users at $1 each.

stefan_kendall··on Readers' tales of extreme commuting
There is no such thing as a "nice car" with respect to long distance travel. They're just not optimized for it.

Maybe when the cars drive themselves the situation will change a bit.

stefan_kendall··on NC Electric Car Drivers Begin Paying $100 Annual Fee
Your scale is way off. I see electric cars everywhere.
stefan_kendall··on Jan. 1 has become the birthday for Afghans who don't know when they were born
What stops someone from stealing my cats out of my apartment?

1.) Most people don't want to.

And if they did get stolen, how would I prove they were mine? I have no registered documentation of the cats!

Except for photos, and dozens of individuals who have seen me with the cats.

You don't need a government certificate to bring a civil or criminal case against someone.

stefan_kendall··on Such DFW. Very Orwell. So Doge. Wow.
The intentional breaking of form takes more mental effort than just writing normally.

Good slam on the mentally handicapped, though. Good for you.

stefan_kendall··on The Day We Fight Back
Modifying websites is not "fighting back". Your time is wasted and meaningless and will not evoke change.
stefan_kendall··on Singapore bucks the trend and welcomes Bitcoin
Unless you're a country bound to a currency controlled by another nation.

Say the Euro collapses. There are many countries who may suddenly decide it makes sense to switch to a new currency. Some may consider BitCoin. In the historical case of Europe, this is unlikely, but it could happen elsewhere.

BitCoin might be a harbor in the face of runaway inflation. Even the swings of BitCoin pale in comparison to periods of massive inflation in several countries.

stefan_kendall··on All Norwegians become crown millionaires, in oil saving landmark
I absolutely guarantee you that you can live quite healthily without dairy. You're essentially arguing against all free trade. Should Norway policy ensure it can build its own computers, phones, or shoes?

A world that relies on trade is a world at peace.

stefan_kendall··on BMW shows off 'drifting' self-drive cars
Please stop "leisure driving". Traffic is a tremendous drain on my life as it is with superfluous cars on the road.
stefan_kendall··on Report: 47% of U.S. Jobs At Risk of Being Automated Out of Existence
I wish I could hide luddite articles like this permanently.

Technology improves efficiency, which eliminates the need for workers. Economics is not a zero-sum game, however. More money saved means more money invested, either by the individual or the bank in the case of pure savings.

Easier lending means more businesses in more industries. Everyone didn't starve to death during the industrial revolution. Dock workers didn't just commit suicide en masse when most of them were obviated by the invention of the shipping container.
