stefan_kendall··on Gmail adding prominent 'Unsubscribe' option to marketing emails
Awesome. I've been fighting to unsubscribe from things for 3 years. From catchall filters that insta-delete to battling inscrutable unsubscribe pages, I'm pretty close to no spam.

I wish I could unsubscribe from everything at once.

stefan_kendall··on Is San Francisco losing its soul?
Don't you just wish every city and place could just stay the same forever?

No.

"Losing its soul" = Changing in a way I don't agree with, and maybe I'll try and use government to stop the change. I'm more important than the people causing the change.

stefan_kendall··on The indignity of no work
"Maybe the jobs are gone forever" - Good analysis, economist. This article is full of bullshit 'maybes' and aggressive 'income inequality' overtones.

I don't know how this garbage gets onto HN.

stefan_kendall··on A recreation of the first level of Super Mario Bros. in Python
If your position is "may", you're on shaky legal ground at best. Regardless, he would be forced to shutter his side project with a CnD, since I doubt he's willing to go to court.
stefan_kendall··on A recreation of the first level of Super Mario Bros. in Python
133 commits? And you have to violate copyright or trademark to learn? Please.
stefan_kendall··on A recreation of the first level of Super Mario Bros. in Python
Maybe spend an afternoon learning up on copyright and trademark law.

Why would you spend so much time on something that clearly violates the intellectual property of Nintendo?

stefan_kendall··on College considers basing president’s salary off that of cleaning staff
Another income inequality article. Get off hacker news and stay off.
stefan_kendall··on Women Outnumber Men For The First Time In Berkeley’s Intro To Computer Science
I've started flagging these stories.

It doesn't matter how many men or women work in particular careers. Technology is only singled out because the pay is high. Where are the articles about the lack of women in welding?

stefan_kendall··on Your Path to a $16B exit? Build a J2ME App
You absolutely need to "design down" if you want to support all of android. Go build an app with a reasonable number of users and you'll learn this the hard way.
stefan_kendall··on KitKat will make your SD Card useless
It's a crap addition that cheap people demand instead of buying phones that can hold more on flash. At least, that's the only argument I've ever heard for SD.
stefan_kendall··on KitKat will make your SD Card useless
Someone buried the lede. The real story here is that someone posted to Google+.
stefan_kendall··on Gabe Newell: Valve, VAC, and trust
Clearly you are unfamiliar with the caliber of comments on hacker news for the borderline-tech articles.
stefan_kendall··on As much Stack Overflow as possible in 4096 bytes
Maybe part of the story here is that gzip isn't the be-all-end-all of compression. A lot of the changes were made to appease the compression algorithm; seems like the algorithm could change to handle the input.

A specialized compression protocol for the web?

stefan_kendall··on No more `grunt watch` – faster builds with the Broccoli asset pipeline
Yet ANOTHER build tool. I've started placing bets on when repositories will flip to NEW-HOTNESS-BUILD-TOOL at the cost of actual product development time.

Engineers will constantly run toward shiny baubles at the expense of everything else.

stefan_kendall··on The C10M problem
Not really. Last I checked, stock Ubuntu was choking around 60k concurrent connections for no reason, and Fedora could handle a lot more. This was a couple years back, but I'd demand numbers before assuming the situation has changed.
stefan_kendall··on Ask HN: Is anyone successful with the 7-minute workout so far?
I'm not sure what you're doing with 20kg.
stefan_kendall··on My quest to fix a broken iPad
It takes several hours (something like 4) to fix a cracked screen if you know what you're doing ahead of time. Professionals can fix a screen in well under an hour.

It's something like $120 for the screen and replacement, or like $40 for the parts themselves. I value my time at greater than $20/hour, so I would pay to have this fixed every time.

stefan_kendall··on Lack of exercise kills roughly as many as smoking, study says
Suppose there's a vaccine that has a 1 in a million chance to kill you.

Also suppose you have a 1% chance to catch and die from a disease without the vaccine.

You would take the vaccine every time.

stefan_kendall··on 1 in 4 Americans Don't Know Earth Orbits the Sun. Yes, Really.
The form of evolution I was taught in school was strictly wrong. It's not hard to see why anyone would reject the principle outright.
stefan_kendall··on Airbnb and Housing
But my gut feeling tells me that supply and demand have nothing to do with price! It's all greedy landlords and tech elitists trying to evict me out of my home I can't afford.
stefan_kendall··on We made something. We use it. We love it. Apple rejected it
I fought the same fucking battle. Just keep appealing and cross your fingers you find a reviewer who isn't a dipshit.
stefan_kendall··on European Commission proposes a reform to the way the Internet is managed and run
Government rarely directly commands action. It's usually "pressure" in the form of mafia protection money.

"Maybe you implement this filter, maybe we don't break your fuckin' kneecaps."

stefan_kendall··on I've made an open source flappy bird clone
Hitbox detection is off, and the physics don't feel nearly as good. There's more to flappy bird than a bird moving through pipes.
stefan_kendall··on Flappy Bird creator, Dong Nguyen, taking down game; "I can't take this anymore"
He released 1.2 at least 7 days ago, given app review times.
stefan_kendall··on Restaurant fable explains everything wrong with San Francisco housing right now
More importantly, building down has geometric levels of cost and linear levels of return.
stefan_kendall··on Silicon Valley has a dress code
"You know plenty of women." Great anecdote, bro. I'm sure that represents an accurate percentage representation of the population.
stefan_kendall··on Silicon Valley has a dress code
A convenience sample is going to exclude women when you're targeting entrepreneurs, VCs, and engineers in the wild.

It could also be that the author was just less intimidated by approaching men than women.

I would feel awkward walking up to strange women and asking them if I could photograph them for an article I was writing.

Maybe the article should be titled "Men's fashion in Silicon Valley", which would be more accurate.

stefan_kendall··on Silicon Valley has a dress code
I rib people who wear suits to an interview, but I wouldn't exclude anyone because of it. It's impossible to really know what the dress code of a place is going in. "Business casual" or "Casual" or "Use your best judgement" don't mean anything at a software company.
stefan_kendall··on Show HN: thedaywefightback.js
Remember when fighting back involved marches and riots in the streets? Now it's a hashtag.

Waaaay more convenient. Things are definitely going to change.

stefan_kendall··on Grunt and RequireJS are out, it's all about Gulp and Browserify
Yay. Another week to waste rebuilding all the builds and fixing all the continuous integration jobs.

Is anyone else thoroughly unexcited about all this playing in the sand? We're building products; why do we spend so much time and money on build tool churn?

I avoid build tools whenever possible (using built-in build commands and things like compass), but when I do need a build, I just use Rake. My toolchain stays the same so I can get shit done.
