smlacy··on The Slotted Counter Pattern (2020)
Really just a special case of sharding.
smlacy··on The Slotted Counter Pattern (2020)
Usually for this kind of use case you want both INCREMENT and DECREMENT. Using a random number for the "Slot" (AKA "Shard") seems like an anti-pattern. If the Slot were derived from a hash of the data itself, then DECREMENT would be much more straightforward.

If you're curious what a "real" performance of this piece sounds like, here's a great version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QKnUzyh84U

For me this transitioned the piece from "a fun academic exercise" to "an amazing piece of real music"

Also includes a great explanation of the piece musically.

smlacy··on Open-interpreter: A natural language interface for computers
I find the "Can you ..." phrasing used in this demo/project fascinating. I would have expected the LLM to basically say "Yes I can, would you like me to do it?" to most of these questions, rather than directly and immediately executing the action.
smlacy··on Developing a D-20 Watch for Tabletop Roleplaying Games
Cute idea.

Not a single photo of this from any other angle than straight-on, so I presume it's very thick and that such off-angle/oblique photos would be unflattering to the product.

If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he eats forever.

These instructions are a fish, and don't really any is the core principles and knowledge that a developer should really know.

Yes, it fixes the problem but doesn't really address the "Why?" part at all.

This is absolutely the very last thing in the world I want to say/hear about a car. We're literally trusting our lives with these software updates, and this bar doesn't sound nearly high enough.

smlacy··on Regex character "$" doesn't mean "end-of-string"
It's easy to get the canonical answer:

$ man pcre2syntax

Where you'll find the following block under ANCHORS AND SIMPLE ASSERTIONS:

         $           end of subject
also before newline at end of subject
also before internal newline in multiline mode
So all the cases of "newline at/before end of subject" are covered here. Then, the question becomes "what is a subject?" Is it line-by-line? Are newlines included? What if we want multiline matching? That's where re.MULTILINE comes from, it's not "multiline matching" (sort of) it's "what is the subject of the regular expression that we're matching against"
smlacy··on Optimizing the Particle Life: From 400 to 4M particles
The thing you describe as "per-pixel optimizations" is exactly what a fragment shader is? You don't need "a polygon" per say, you can just run said code over ever pixel in the frame for each frame. This is how simple screenspace effects are implemented, compositing, HDR, etc.

I'm also a 3D printing noob and recently (~4mos ago) purchased a P1P.

- It's amazing.

- I'm using it for a lot more (mostly just fun, not functional) things than I had originally expected.

- The kids aren't as interested in printing stuff out as I had expected. A little interest in the beginning but now it's mostly just my thing (as expected?).

- Printing terrain models is super fun & easy. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DRiqX20-68)

- I wish I had just buckled down and gotten the P1S from the get-go. (mostly because of noise and just general "cleanliness"). My upgrade kit arrives tomorrow.

- As best as I can tell, anything less than the P1P/P1S (Ender3 etc) requires a lot of tweaking/tuning/fussing to get nice prints. I get amazing looking prints with little/no effort.

- Friends bought one of these ~$300 "toybox" printers and it was so bad they couldn't get it to print anything reasonable and returned it. I've printed some STL files for them without issue.

smlacy··on The evolution of the On/Off power switch symbol (2008)
No discussion about use of 0/1 for power switches is complete without mention of the original IBM 5150 (original PC) power switch, which is the first place I ever remember seeing the "binary" 0/1 used to mean "power on / power off" on electronics.

smlacy··on A guide to home row mods
Welcome to the world of being someone who uses the Dvorak Layout. I quickly learned that my brain can't hold "two layouts" and my qwerty-layout touch typing pretty much evaporated after focusing on typing exclusively Dvorak. I can touch type Dvorak at over 90wpm, and Qwerty at maybe half that at best.

The thing that you somewhat over-exaggerate is the frequency at which I'm not using "my own computer" that has been already setup with Dvorak. Its exceedingly rare that I ever type anything on someone else's machine.

smlacy··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?

smlacy··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Often times "Reliability" is calculated as "fraction of cars that have a recall or other unscheduled maintenance during the initial N months of ownership" and I believe Tesla is actually quite high in this regard?

smlacy··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Very weird how EVs and ICEs are intermixed.

I would expect vastly different results across different drivetrains, and probably even more differences across shape/size platforms (compact, sedan, truck, van, etc.).
