runj__··on My parents collect cans for a living
I don't know about "respectful" for both parties. Bottle collectors trying to take/steal not yet empty bottles and cans has become more of a rule than an exception in parks in central Stockholm.

I'm still very much in favour of container deposit but I'm growing really tired of forceful collecting.

runj__··on Adele gets Spotify to take shuffle button off all album pages
Two of those are just indicators of what playlist and song is playing, sort of like pwd, sure you can press them to pause but that's hidden functionality. The top and bottom pause buttons are for people who don't know about keyboard shortcuts and don't want to move their mouse all the way up or down the app.

I know you really don't mean it but... Criminal?

As lover of flying I might have my feathers ruffled but there's certainly other pros to flying (the view, the feeling of takeoff).

Maybe I'm just trying to justify my love of flying, still though.

runj__··on Google sends anti-regulation propaganda to small businesses using Google Maps
So, how was the island?

I've experienced similar things, seems like one of the simpler problems to solve.

runj__··on Programmers’ emotions
On a societal and evolutionary level they're necessary feelings, on an individual level they're just burdensome. You can reason your way to the same results.

Then put a gun on it and you have something even worse!
runj__··on Dutch forensic lab says it has decoded Tesla's driving data
Isn't tail-gating more common in non-self driving cars though?
runj__··on Apple requires account deletion within apps in AppStore starting January 31
It can just go through a manual review and delete the parts that they're are legally required to delete. While I don't agree with a lot of the money laundering/terror financing laws banks shouldn't have to delete your data if you're trying to avoid taxes or whatever.

INITIATION is the important part, if they fail to delete the parts they're required to delete, F them: get them off the app store.

I _know_ that all actors on all shows share some kind of relationship. Adam was one of the first I saw to show his off screen life (probably in some kind of persona). It's both interesting and sad seeing Adam relating to a former friend, I've seen him acting and I've seen him "not acting".

I'm thankful they did this video.

runj__··on Genius Sells to Media Lab for $80M
It's the interpretations that will be difficult to replicate elsewhere, I used it a lot studying literature. It's difficult to extract money and gather a large audience/contributors from something like that.
runj__··on Git password authentication is shutting down
I'm also a dingus and I am sometimes forced to clone private repos to new machines which doesn't have my keys. I know that ssh-agent is a thing which is sometimes set up but I still don't really know how it works, and sometimes it doesn't work at all with weird proxy servers and whatnot.

I wish there was some way of _manually_ identifying via a simple link or QR code or whatever.

runj__··on The mystery of the lost Roman herb (2017)
Last time this was discussed on HN someone brought up that there's a perfume that tries to replicate the smell of silphium:

https://www.storaskuggan.com/products/silphium

It smells great!

runj__··on Harvey’s Casino Bomb
What parent commenter is talking about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead%E2%80%93crime_hypothesis

It is very much a hypothesis, but it certainly could be true.

runj__··on Gamification, life, and the pursuit of a gold badge
I fall for badges and XP, I know it's not real but it triggers something in me. Duolingo have an anniversary "event" in June and I practiced more than ever to get a silly badge, same things with the streaks, I have no real reason to to a lesson on a Saturday when I have a hangover, I have _negative_ reasons to do so. And yet, that streak...

The McDonalds app also uses points but I'm not that interested in purchasing 10 Big Macs to get a free Happy Meal, but if they had streaks...

runj__··on The economics of dollar stores
I somewhat agree with you but I really do like some kind of curation, even if that curation is done by the market. There's nothing inherently good with a surplus of bad goods. I'd prefer a copy of "The Library of Babel" vs. all of the books inside of it.

I love the internet.

runj__··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
Sorry about replying to a week old post but your link and post really made me think:

I think the initial HN comment was justified albeit a bit nerdy, the marketing was just poor at the time. Not being able to delete a post is sort of a problem with all written media, the internet is not your group of friends at a bar. Being able to distance yourself from something that you've previously said might be a solution, an "I stand corrected" button might be a solution. Perhaps just being able to add a strikethough to an old post.

runj__··on Google Dataset Search
The person who added the data set is the same person that owns the business, so this seems pretty likely.
runj__··on Why I Work on Ads
Wouldn't traditional "offline" advertising be even worse?

"We suspect X million people watch this TV show (based on highly inaccurate Nielsen ratings) and then stayed around for the ad break, pay XX dollars."

"XXX people passed by your billboard, XX saw it, X people visited your website and made a purchase, pay XX dollars."

runj__··on Why I Work on Ads
It's amazing to see the amount of people in this post that don't click ads. I really try to avoid to click them, I quite often open an incognito window to search for product I've just seen in an ad (I'm sure Google will find a way to figure out that an incognito user with the same IP as me is... me, but it feels better to try).

But I do click ads in my work, if the top (ad) link on Google is something relevant I might click it if I don't care for the company. I try to avoid clicking links for companies I really like since I work in a very ad heavy industry and know how much CPC can cost.

runj__··on What Snoop Dogg’s Success Says About the Book Industry
Hasn't this always been the case? 1000 copies sold is seen as pretty ok for a first time author. It's kind of the same as with musical artists.
runj__··on Earth Restored – 50 restored images of earth released
I cried a little at the the shot of the lander and earth from the command module, the thought of every single other human in the same frame is just too much.
runj__··on Spotify continues to remove Joe Rogan episodes
They tricked a bunch of users over to their (awful) podcast playing experience, playing (free) podcasts is cheaper than paying for music for your subscribers. I don't think they've made their money back on it yet but any user that plays a podcast is just free (or unspent) money for them.
runj__··on The political case for a blanket cryptocurrency ban
"Scam" would indicate intent which I'd seriously think you'd be hard pressed to find behind the bitcoin white paper, it would be a really bad, slow scam if it included the number of steps where bitcoin would be where it is right now.

I can put a virus on someone's computer and make them mail physical dollars or make dead-drops or whatever to remove it, ransomware is not a problem of cryptocurrency.

runj__··on Inside a viral website

runj__··on Suez Canal says traffic in channel resumes after stranded ship refloated
I had great fun reading about the number of helicopters and starships needed to lift the ship and probably took something away from it for future endeavours. Really great for thinking about scale.
runj__··on Concern in Europe that the Ariane 6 and Vega-C rockets will not be competitive
The US govt isn't the only customer though, if I'm not mistaken they're paying the market price just as everyone else? Sure they subsidise launch prices by creating a market, but they do that for all companies, right? SpaceX doesn't win all contracts.
runj__··on Minecraft vs. Roblox (2020)
I never got a chemistry set primarily because my parents thought of them as a bit dangerous. I would have loved a set that was "guaranteed" safe just to get anything at all.

I probably wouldn't have become a Nobel prize winning chemist with my n00b/safe set but it might have set something off.

runj__··on Minecraft vs. Roblox (2020)
I've worked professionally with a person who found their love for programming by modifying Minecraft mods. I'd say he was far better than the vast majority of bootcamp devs, even without much real work experience.

Finding out what is fun for you is such an important step in self-actualisation and a continued interest.
