rev087··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
Pretty much what I would do. Netflix has such a large catalog, that I don't bother cancelling during periods when I'm not even using the service. If the content I'm interested in is spread through various services, I'll simply sign up, watch what I wanted to watch, then cancel. One month's subscription is enough for me to catch up on a season's worth of some series I like.

This however creates the incentive for providers to start enforcing long term contracts for the regular price, or a much higher price for a monthly plan, in which case DVDs will be relevant again for me.

rev087··on Twitch is acquiring popular video game community and software maker Curse
I'm on the same boat, the only complaint being the lack of history search. And I like Discord so much that I switched our office from Hipchat to Discord, despite it being exclusively marketed towards gamers.

We have been completely happy with the switch, in special the ability to hop into voice chat with remote coworkers with one mouse click.

rev087··on WhatsApp is back online in Brazil
I'm Brazilian, my phone got bombarded with "<user> just joined Telegram" notifications today.
rev087··on Flexbox Froggy: A game for learning CSS flexbox
This was incredibly educational for me. My only feedback/request would be to reinforce the difference between `align-content` and `align-items`. I still don't quite get when to use which.
rev087··on Flexbox Froggy: A game for learning CSS flexbox
I too struggled on the last level, which was certainly jarring because the ramp up until that point was quite gentle.

That said, I did enjoy the last level as a challenge; it prompted me not only to review earlier levels, but also check documentation elsewhere. Much like a real-world challenge, these can be valuable learning experiences.

rev087··on Thoughts on RethinkDB and GraphQL
I might be the exception, but I find Github comments much easier to digest and manage as an archive than mailing lists. In all the years working in the industry, I could never get used to mail lists.
rev087··on Ask HN: How often do you Google for answers while coding?
For me, depends on the level of experience I have with the language/platform/library, ranging from once a month to a dozen times in a day.
rev087··on A game whose source code fits in one tweet
Has been like this for as long as I can remember (at least back to IE6).
rev087··on How I created two images with the same MD5 hash
Valid criticism, but Blogspot is to blame here.
rev087··on Looks by Dr. Dre
To counterbalance, I think the Beats products look great and I've been tempted to buy them, but this very "image" around the brand sets me off greatly. That's the problem with endorsements, you end up wrangling your brand image with that of the celebrities endorsing your product.
rev087··on Jq: A lightweight and flexible command-line JSON processor
I've been using this for a while, and it's wonderful to parse the output from API calls requested via curl, as well as quickly checking a specific package.json field from the npm output. The --json flag is handy for the latter.
rev087··on Dash – Beautiful instant offline docs for almost everything
You just need to get used to incorporating Dash into your workflow. If it helps convincing you, Dash also has tabs and uses the same shortcuts as Chrome.
rev087··on Introducing Swift
Apple is a big, rich corporation. But in that campus there are still human developers.

Radical hypothesis: what if this started as a pet project, got the attention of more employees, then management (with or without convincing from said developers). Management sees the value in the project, and funds it officially. You know, like other big, rich corporations...such as Google.

rev087··on Learn AngularJS with free interactive lessons
While Angular can certainly be used for simple progressive enhancement-kind interactions, its strength lies in single page/fat client apps, and in this case not having javascript and still getting basic functionality would mean duplicating it on the server. Still, it would be a good idea to display a noscript message alerting the user about the JS requirement.
rev087··on Word Lens (Quest Visual) is Joining Google
My thoughts exactly. Also, I wonder what ever happened to Google Goggles, which as I recall was very similar technology.
rev087··on Off-Canvas Sidebar Transitions with CSS
That's pretty neat, but this demo uses some sort of scrolling emulation, so in the iPhone (tested in a 4s) this particular implementation breaks: Taping the status bar to scroll to the top, momentum scrolling, elastic bounce at both ends.
rev087··on Why I threw away three Jawbone UPs, sold my Fitbit Flex and deinstalled Human
The bit about taking a picture of food you are about to consume and reading/logging nutritional data might be closer to viability once smartphones get Kinnect-like 3D sensors, making it possible to read volume data. Google's [Project Tango](https://www.google.com/atap/projecttango/) is one such initiative.

Does anyone know of any computer vision research into identifying food?

rev087··on Night Walk in Marseille [video]
Videos are not loading for me at all using Safari 7.0.3
rev087··on Night Walk in Marseille [video]
That seems to be the "loading indicator". I was confused for a second, then it just faded away. I don't think there's a browser API to actually know wether the user has headphones plugged in or not.
rev087··on Denial of Service Attacks
The problem is that github itself agregates value. Issues, Gist, not to mention that various package management systems use github as the repository.
rev087··on Habits of a Happy Node Hacker
I haven't used npm tasks yet, so take this with a grain of salt. Grunt has two main advantages: a rich plugin ecosystem, with easy-to-configure/use tasks for pretty much anything I can think of (preprocessing, concatenating, minifying, linting, live reloading etc.) and a standardized "language" to configure Grunt plugins (third party or your custom tasks).

Once you familiarize yourself with the Grunt way of setting up tasks, it becomes trivially simple to obtain and run plugins for your tasks.

rev087··on Planets³, an Open-World Voxel-Based rpg
A few years ago there was even a small "gold rush" for emoji domains.

rev087··on Why Stack Overflow in Portuguese?
It's interesting to think of the benefits a modern constructed language and script could bring, but a way to foster adoption would be a very difficult task. Esperanto has a lot of speakers world wide, but hardly in significant proportions.

Another interesting case is the Cherokee syllabary:

> Once Albert Gallatin saw a copy of Sequoyah's syllabary, he found the syllabary superior to the English alphabet. Even though the Cherokee student must learn 85 characters instead of 26, he can read immediately. The student could accomplish in a few weeks what students of English writing could learn in two years.

rev087··on Skype blog hacked
There is also a second post from the same - apparently compromised - author: http://blogs.skype.com/2014/01/01/dont-use-microsoft-emails-...
rev087··on Amazon Prime Air
If there ever will be one, someone needs to announce it first. And if the timing is commercially interesting for Amazon, that just reflect the fact that Amazon is a company with financial intereste, just like any other company.
rev087··on Why have SVG images not yet replaced PNG on the web?
I imagine that is mostly due to the lack of attention to the format. PDFs with vector graphics work very well both in my desktop computer and mobile phone. The iPhone can even preview Adobe Illustrator files very well. Granted, it could cache the renderization since the image is not dynamic as a webpage.
rev087··on AutoDesk Releases An Electronics Simulator Called 123D Circuits
One could argue that Autodesk's killer feature here is simulation; afaik, Fritzing doesn't have that feature.
rev087··on Spaceglasses: Hacking Reality with Javascript
I usually don't mind that much when the wrong terminology and naming is used, but this specific case was a disservice for me. I was very confused to see the syntaxe he used, yet calling it JavaScript; I thought they used a modified JS syntaxe, possibly pre-compiling it to the C# equivalent.
rev087··on "Journey to Justinia" – how I got my 5-year-old son to sit still for 5 hours
We did these too! But our little group of kids used two variants: the first was meant to be played by tracing your path with a pencil (so we could erase and reuse the map) through really narrow passages. The second was more interpretative; the players needed to use tools and the environment to progress (such as chopping down a tree and building a canoe to go through a river). We even had recurring characters from our real life experiences.

Our textbooks were full of mini maps like these around the edges.

rev087··on Bright Explosion on the Moon
To some this might come off as simple bragging, but I can relate to the sense of accomplishment (and appreciate the little insight into the tech stack).
