rale00··on Tesla is looking to redesign its door handles following trapped-passenger report
Alloy wheels are pretty light, and the weight mostly affects acceleration.

At speed, most of your power is going to fight drag, so aerodynamics make a much bigger difference in efficiency.

rale00··on Exercise, metabolism, and weight: New research from The Biggest Loser (2022)
If only we could find some way to harness the power of these thermodynamics-violating pizzas.
rale00··on Fairbuds: In-ear with replaceable batteries
You wouldn't be implementing anything in software. The hardware would have decoding built in, so it's really just a question of choosing a bluetooth audio soc with the codecs you want and paying the licensing fees.
rale00··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
> if kia makes a cheap car with crappy locks either don't buy it

Immobilizers were a standard feature on cars for decades. If you went to buy a car, no one was putting immobilizer on the list of features, and they certainly wouldn't let you try breaking the ignition lock on a test drive.

If they had advertised that their vehicles were insecure, then sure, it's on the buyer, but they didn't.

rale00··on Why is my LG Washing Machine using 3.6GB of data/day?
If you decide to do that, make sure you use something rated to handle that kind of load. The cheaper ones really aren't meant for more than switching on and off some lights.
rale00··on Why is my LG Washing Machine using 3.6GB of data/day?
I can't imagine there's much value in LG knowing how often I wash my clothes.

On the other hand, it's nice to get a notification when the cycle is done if I'm on the other side of the house. Refrigerator sending a notification to my phone if the door isn't closed could come in handy some day too.

rale00··on The anatomy of a smart bulb
Philips makes some bulbs that change color temperature to get warmer the more you dim them. Not as flexible as a smart bulb, but it gets you most of the way there.
rale00··on Taurine deficiency as a driver of aging
You don't directly convert dosage across species like that. The dosage they tested on monkeys was 250mg/kg, and the human equivalent would be less than that.
rale00··on A peek inside Japan's largest “Dagashi” store
The real estate bubble in the 80s probably still has a lot to do with it. It took 2 decades for real estate prices to start to recover at all.
rale00··on Health officials delayed report linking fluoride to brain harm
Wait till you find out whats in mouthwash...
rale00··on YouTube removed dislike counts, so this guy made Rotten Tomatoes for YouTube
Groups of trolls banding together to down-vote people they dislike is as old as down-vote buttons. Surely you've heard of brigading?
rale00··on I bought a CO2 monitor and it broke me
Sounds like the meter was broken or at least wasn't properly calibrated. CO2 level should drop off quickly with a window open.
rale00··on Activision’s faulty anti-cheat software
In real life, if you go to a sporting event or a show, and start harassing the other patrons and causing a disruption, you can expect to be kicked out without a refund.

Refunding people who deserve to be banned would only encourage them to create new accounts and continue causing problems.

rale00··on Are Modern Bicycles the End of DIY Maintenance?
Bleeding hydraulic disc brakes is a pretty daunting task, involving specialized tools, messy and possibly corrosive fluid, and just a lot of work. If they weren't essentially required for running wider tires/rims, I would avoid them entirely.

Electronic shifting on the other hand is super easy, especially now that you can go full wireless. Definitely easier than say, setting up and adjusting a mechanical front derailleur.

rale00··on Shimano Forces Hammerhead to Remove All Di2 Related Functionality From Karoo
Looks like internet archive has a copy of the linked github page. Seems like it has everything needed, including the network key, to get things working. If you want to risk a legal fight with Shimano, that is.
rale00··on Investing in lighting did great things for my mental and physical health
I set up an automation to slowly open my curtains when I want to wake up. It's a much nicer way to wake up than an alarm.
rale00··on Android 13 virtualization lets Pixel 6 run Windows 11, Linux distributions
> Tablets with cellular connectivity are if anything less well supported than before.

Not my experience. I'm sure it depends a bit on your carrier, but on T-Mobile it was easy to order a data sim for a tablet from their website. Setting up a smart watch was even easier with eSIM, it just sets up everything for you when you pair with your phone.

rale00··on Tepco slow to respond to growing crisis at Fukushima plant
The original article this was translated from is here: https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASPDG3FGWPD6ULBJ019.html?iref...

The inflammatory language, in particular the parts you quoted, seem to have been added for the English translation.

rale00··on A USB Fan Controller that now works under Linux
I guess it depends on what fans you're running, but 1 A should be enough for at least 3 of the most commonly used ones. Noctua lists max input current for all their fans, and even the high speed industrial ones are only 0.18 A.
rale00··on Engineers are developing new ways to convert greenhouse gases to fuel
Methane is fairly short-lived in the atmosphere, at only 12 years, so it probably wouldn't be particularly effective at terraforming mars. Perfluorocarbons or sulfur hexafluoride can stick around for thousands of years, so they would probably be a better place to start.
rale00··on How the Media Can Help Prevent Mass Shootings
Maybe the solution is to go after the advertisers. If there was backlash from the public towards companies whose products were advertised next to programs that sensationalized murder, those companies would cut funding in a hurry. The media would reform itself in a hurry in that case.
rale00··on WebKit Tracking Prevention Policy
> Didn't people make money off internet advertising before the modern surveillance-marketing complex? What happened to it?

Non-contextual advertising still exists, but it's perceived as less effective, so there's a lot less money in it. I don't know if that perception is correct, but I do remember back when a common complaint from people was that the ads they saw weren't relevant to them.

It's also not just targeted advertising that will be affected. Without any sort of user tracking, it will be even harder to prevent fraud. No one wants to spend money showing ads to bots.

> Also I assume / hope that iOS ads aren't tracking people either; third-party cookies simply have no equivalent in the iOS app sandbox design.

You might want to look into the Apple Advertising Identifier.

rale00··on WebKit Tracking Prevention Policy
So what is going to happen when Apple succeeds in making it impossible to make any money off advertisements shown to iOS users on the web?

I'm currently imagining a future where publishers start to just redirect iOS traffic to install their app, where they can actually make money. Good news for the walled garden, I guess?

rale00··on A 17k sport car made in France
You can get a new Mitsubishi Mirage for under $10k, if you really wanted to. Just like this car, it also comes with a 1.2L 3-cylinder engine, and is also not at all a sports car.
