prakhar897··on Another cluster of potentially malicious Chrome extensions
I made a chrome extension that has about 3000 users and adding about 100 users weekly. One Day someone reached out to me offering to pay 0.20$/user for it. The extension required manual data input from time to time so I was happy to get my hands off it.

I was confused as after buying the guy seemingly did nothing with the extension. Now I'm realizing that it has become a part of the malware community. I was also using ESCompiler to bundle files which was naturally obfuscating it a lot.

The point is that these people acquire extensions when they have a growth trajectory, then sit back and let the cash roll in. Kinda like VCs. That's why they have such a huge collection of popular extensions.

Also, To get "Featured" on chrome, you just have to fill a paltry form about accessibility etc and wait for a few weeks. "Featured" does not mean the application is safe in any way. I'd say it's the contrary since the scammers know exactly how to get the tag to look more trustworthy.

prakhar897··on Rooms.xyz
The learn this by observing other players.
prakhar897··on Rooms.xyz
Well polished, but this is literally "Habbo Hotel".

There were a number of issues which lead to Habbo's downfall:

1. Anarcho Capitalism: Habbo Hotel turned into a pure monopoly when children learnt about capitalism on field. This video explains this in detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE6jxjKPNZQ

2. Politically Incorrect Stuff: Lots of non conforming stuff happened. some of which actually made it to mainstream news. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp2EZbbuMa0

3. Scams: Kids are the easiest demography to scam. It also teaches them at an early age how to scam people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiDPTiFHfcs

Although right now this product is a bit different than Habbo, but how do the founders plan to address these? Especially the political one since anyone can make anything right now.

Edit: Sorry I edited the comment after realizing its Habbo.

prakhar897··on Ask HN: Feedback for Feedback? (May 2023)
I'm working on a chrome extension which writes Hyper-Personalized Messages for LinkedIn Prospects using ChatGPT.

You can find the demo link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGMBSAHQgos

and try out the product here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/coldmessagegpt-gpt...

Happy to know your thoughts on this!!

prakhar897··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
> "We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI"

and neither does Coca Cola and Cadbury. Yet biggest monopolies are found in these places. Because the competitors will not be differentiated enough for users to switch from the incumbent.

But G-AI is still nascent and there's lots of improvements to be had. I suspect better tech is a moat but ofcourse Google is oblivious to it.

prakhar897··on Ask HN: I built before I sold, Am I Doomed?
Thanks!! I'll contact all existing trial users for an interview.
prakhar897··on Ask HN: I built before I sold, Am I Doomed?
1. I've put it on subreddits but haven't got the traction I wanted. I think the product might not be solving the correct problem. Hence, I didn't try to cold message people with it.

2. The price point is 5$/month which really not feasible to contact customers individually. If I do 100 cold outreaches a day, 10 try the product and one converts, it's 5$/day salary.

prakhar897··on Amazon investigates after high-value orders were switched for cheaper products
I ordered AC from amazon and received an older version. The whole ordeal was interesting, to say the least. I've written about it here: https://pgpt.substack.com/p/how-amazon-deceives-its-customer...

The main point is that these companies can waste hours or even days of your time while automating everything on their end. Hence, they are incentivized to make profitable "accidents" and hope you're not stubborn.

prakhar897··on How to make good small games
When I'm working on a game, I create an incredibly simple version and iterate from there. By simple, I mean just a box on a ground would be considered a first version. Next version, added movement. Next version, added lake etc......

I also make sure it's default live so I can get continuos external feedback as well.

prakhar897··on New Arkansas bill to keep minors off social media exempts most social platforms
Nice, Another MOAT added to social media platforms.

Big platforms like Facebook can spend a lot of money complying with the "law" whereas the startups disrupting it will die.

Scale. paying 100$ for 1 pic vs paying 10$ subscription for 100 pics.
prakhar897··on Ever-expanding animation of the life of the 796th floor of a space station
This is insane. What techniques are you using to animate it? A lot of people will pay for an AI which animates still 8-bit MJ generated pics.
prakhar897··on Ideas That Changed My Life
Here's one written by ChatGPT. https://sharegpt.com/c/cjnFahj

2 in the top 5 matches the handwritten article.

prakhar897··on Ideas That Changed My Life
Sorry for being rude.

The above article sounds like written by GPT. Also, the author's tweets look like this:

"If you really wanna learn about somebody, skip the 60 minute interview and have them drive you through New York City for 15 minutes."

And then this person calls himself "The Writing Guy" on his twitter bio and unironically sells a writing course.

prakhar897··on British government mocked for advertising head of cyber role with £57K salary
Maybe the govt doesn't want to externally fill this role, and instead give it to their buddy. Hence they are trying to make it as unappealing as possible.
prakhar897··on The age of average
Am I dumb or is this article pseudoscience?

The AirBNB example is horrible. I've worked on ranking side of a very similar hotel aggregator app. Certain pics are boosted because users click on them more, the AirBNB hosts then see this and make their house more conforming to the top pictures. A few cycles of this and you've got complete homogeneity. Same with Instagram Models, Youtube thumbnails, Book covers etc.

I want to point out a key difference. It's not that people like a specific thing, it's more that a kafkaesque algorithm boosts specific traits. People realize this and start to mimic those traits.

The infrastructure arguments falls flat because creativity requires money which most buildings have scarcity of. So they mostly follow the cookie cutter model.

prakhar897··on GitHub slashes engineering team in India
My friend makes 80LPA = 98k$ as SDE2. Multiple former teammates makes around 70LPA = 85k$.
prakhar897··on GitHub slashes engineering team in India
UK salaries are 75k$ for SDE1, 165k$ for SDE2. Roughly 2x Indian compensation. EU region also has strong labor laws.
prakhar897··on GitHub slashes engineering team in India
For the people arguing that Indian Techies are expensive, Here are the pay bands for Amazon in India vs USA.

       USA India
SDE1 160k | 30k

SDE2 252k - 325k | 65k - 100k

SDE3 400k - 600k | 150k - 200k

Also, Labor laws in India are non-existant where you can work your employee to death. Amazon also pays top of the market in India and you can get decent workers for much less. Hence, you can get 10x the output by investing the same capital in India instead of USA.

Another point is the labor of India being poor quality. These come because people contract WITCH companies which pay not even pennies to its employees. Expecting people to create top notch work while paying 4k$ per year is just not feasible even in India. (McD worker in US makes 13k$ per year).

prakhar897··on GitHub slashes engineering team in India
Not really.

Amazon pays 160k$ to freshers in US. It pays 25L aka 30k$ in India. SDE2 band in India is 65k$ to 100k$. SDE3 Gets 150k$ to 200k$.

Add to that the lax regulations of labor laws in India and Amazon paying top of the market, they get a skilled and an experienced worker in India for the same price as a 21 yr old US college grad.

India is still extremely cheap compared to the west.

prakhar897··on Anti-recruiter prompt injection attack in LinkedIn profile
Funny enough, I'm working on the opposite side of this. A chrome extension which creates personalized messages to send to people. You can check it out here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/smileywriter-gpt-w...

I think recruiters will win this one since everyone can't be bothered to put anti-prompts in their profiles.

prakhar897··on Who becomes an entrepreneur? Insights from research studies

prakhar897··on Responsible AI Challenge
Does disrupting the current systems count as "Responsible AI".

If yes, this product write personalized messages based on user's profiles. There's no way decipher handwritten message from the machine written one without getting lots of False positives. In short, this product kills inboxes.

Here's a Demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raIc2dQSq0k

How do you decide if this constitutes for "Responsible AI" or not? I think we are headed for some harsh discussions in the future.

prakhar897··on Coinbase suspending USDC:USD conversions over the weekend
I think Stablecoins systems are more resilient than traditional banks in bank runs.

In Case of a traditional Bank Run (SVB), pulling the money out is the overwhelmingly best thing to do due to game theory logic. This means once a bank run starts, there's no stopping it.

But in Stablecoins, the coin "depegs", this gives people a reason to actually buy and support the coin if they think insolvency won't happen.

prakhar897··on If you're so good, why aren't you making 600k at BigTech?
The Europeans might not move but they can starting working remotely. Similarly, Chinese and Indians will start working remote US positions rather than moving to Europe.
prakhar897··on French workers protest plan to increase retirement age
The people should themselves be managing their retirement corpus. Some would become rich, some would be poor but in the end they won't take money off the taxpayers.

Instead they gave their money to governments who immediately consumed, mismanaged, gave it to themselves and while kicking the can down the road with cheap loans.

Now, current governments are left with old people with no money demanding benefits and young people getting taxed into poverty.
