phantom784··on FCC launches inquiry to increase minimum broadband speed [pdf]
Or at least require that uncapped tiers be available.
phantom784··on How Soap Works: The Science Behind Handwashing
Isopropyl alcohol works well for cleaning pine sap.
phantom784··on Cratering motor fuel sales in Norway show the death spiral that can end oil
If oil is only being used in a product that won't eventually be burned and produce CO2, then that's a big win.
phantom784··on Billing Engines Don't Solve Pricing Problems
I've worked on pricing. There's a lot of complexity, even with a fairly simple product. Our product was a monthly subscription with 4 different tiers. Complications included:

  - Annual plans that include a discount vs paying month to month.
  - Introductory pricing (and how long that lasts)
  - Promo codes
  - Dealing with multiple currencies
  - Pricing on iOS, where you have to pick on of their "pricing tiers"
phantom784··on Ask HN: Googlers, Will Google Disable Accounts for Using Adblockers on YouTube?
That's exactly what they've been showing. "Disable your ad blocker or get premium" in essence.
phantom784··on Where does my computer get the time from?
Watching the actual talk is much better: https://ripe86.ripe.net/archives/video/1126/
phantom784··on What every software developer must know about Unicode in 2023
I guess it's a question as to how many varieties of spelling you want to make available as "translations" in software (e.g. color vs colour, tire vs tyre).

There's plenty of regional variants just within the US, but "en_us" covers the whole country.

phantom784··on Qatar Airways flying near-empty planes in Australia to exploit legal loophole
The ghost flight already loses money. It exists to enable the flight to Melbourne to exist - it is essentially an additional cost to run that flight.

The increased cost would be passed on to the ticket prices of the Melbourne flight. The ghost flight would only be eliminated if the increased prices lower demand enough that the Melbourne flight (including the cost of running the ghost flight after it) becomes unprofitable.

phantom784··on Qatar Airways flying near-empty planes in Australia to exploit legal loophole
I'm not sure how that would help here. The costs of tickets would go up proportionally, but the incentives to run the ghost flights would still be there.
phantom784··on Qatar Airways flying near-empty planes in Australia to exploit legal loophole
The airlines should be allowed to pay a fee equivalent to the cost of running the flight (or slightly less), rather than having to actually fly an empty plane.
phantom784··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
I'd suspect it kills TCP connections once a threshold of data has been transferred, and the threshold is enough to let text through but not enough for attachments.
phantom784··on Is an All-Meat Diet What Nature Intended?
Plus, some parts of plants do "want" to be eaten - namely fruits, as a strategy to spread seeds.
phantom784··on Ask HN: YouTube keeps suggesting vids I marked “not interested”. What can I do?
If you happened to watch/click on a video that you don't want recommendations for, go into your history and delete them, and then you'll stop getting recommendations for similar videos.
phantom784··on FTC judge decides Intuit’s ‘free’ TurboTax ads misled consumers
What forms do they charge for? I've only seen them charge for state taxes.
phantom784··on Fanatics Is Building a Weird Monopoly over Sports Trading Cards
I still have my 90s Pokemon cards. Haven't found any that are really worth anything.
phantom784··on The worst API ever made (2014)
When teaching myself as a kid, I quickly realized that win32 was way over my head. However, web stuff seemed easy enough, so I started teaching myself web development instead. This was in the early 2000s, before everything started moving to web applications. It certainly managed to pay off!

I never did learn win32...

phantom784··on Data brokers selling license plate location and analytics data
Privacy could be a use case for those e ink license plates that have started showing up in California.

Instead of the "real" number, change the plate every 5 minutes using some sort of OTP algorithm. Makes it impossible for anyone with a camera to put together a location database, but the car is still identifiable by law enforcement if necessary.

phantom784··on Boston mayor announces residential conversion program for office buildings
In a high rise, are the windows really helping with egress? I'd think access to multiple stairwells is what'd be key for safety.
phantom784··on We spent $20k on Google Play pre-registration ads
This sort of ad just doesn't seem useful for this type of app.

I'd think most people would want a meal planning app that they can use right away, so they'd just download a different app when they see yours isn't available yet.

I wonder how many of those "pre-registrations" thought they could install it right away, saw they couldn't and then just found something else.

phantom784··on Ask HN: Stubhub buying their own tickets under fake names?
It could make sense if someone lists the tickets for less than their market value - perhaps they're trying to be nice and are reselling at face value, or just need the tickets to sell quickly.

In this case, StubHub could buy them and re-sell them to arbitrage the seller's price and the true market value.

phantom784··on Carmakers don’t need ‘EV divisions,’ the whole company should go electric now
What if you live in an apartment complex that doesn't provide charging? Or if you have to park on the street?
phantom784··on AI weights are not open “source”
I think there could be an argument that it's copyrightable but not a derivative work.

If I read a few books about a subject as research, and then I write an article about the subject, it's my own copyright. The fact that I did research doesn't make it derivative of those books (correct me if I'm wrong, IANAL).

Perhaps a model created from copyrighted material be treated in the same way?

phantom784··on Submarine missing near Titanic used a $30 Logitech gamepad for steering
Looks like it's licensed to "BBC Select" in the US. https://www.bbcselect.com/watch/take-me-to-titanic/
phantom784··on Things I wish I’d known before fulltime RVing (2017)
Do you not go to national parks and other similar places where you wouldn't be able to get an Uber?
phantom784··on As the West surges toward EVs, here’s where the unwanted gas guzzlers go
Doesn't work if you want to keep the tax revenue in the state whose roads you used. Gas tax mostly does this (albeit imperfectly).
phantom784··on The Bay Area German bar that brought down Apple’s famed iPhone security
Used to go there all the time - had no idea it was the bar where the iPhone prototype was lost (which happened long before I moved to the Bay).
phantom784··on Update on Sharing
If you're using Netflix through a browser, they wouldn't have access to the SSID.
phantom784··on Solving Intermittent Cable Modem Issues
My internet works luckily, but recently noticed that whoever installed the coax in the house we're renting just cut through one of the crawlspace vents, leaving a giant hole for mice/etc to get in through. Real quality work there...
phantom784··on “Considered Harmful” Essays Considered Harmful (2002)
"break" and "continue" are both effectively a "goto", and they're pretty commonly used.
phantom784··on Last Call to Migrate Mojang Accounts
I bought Minecraft back in 2010. Haven't played in ages, but figured I'd merge the accounts, and give it another go. After I merged, it now says I don't own the game and have to buy it again.

Edit: Logged in again and now it's working. Go figure
