outime··on Does anyone else finds AWS and other Amazon services overly complicated?
No, I use the SDK or the CLI tools available for everyone.
outime··on It looks like I’m moving to Mastodon
It's the typical anti-<whatever> hate waves that happen in HN. Outside of this bubble, people don't really lose sleep over it.

Signal is a very good example because WhatsApp is getting more popular as the days go by as opposed to what one could possibly infer from the waves of posts that appeared not long ago here about it.

It's just so important to separate this otherwise insignificant group of minds vs the many other several millions that aren't here and don't share the views - or perhaps (some) do but then it comes down to the network effect once again which has always been a present issue in every alternative among other factors. This time won't be different I'm afraid.

outime··on Ask HN: How to Stop Caring (Professionally)?
Given that I know anything about you, have you considered if the job is the only important thing that may be going in your life? If most of the time in your day goes around work then the mind can easily obsess. Doing different activities will help a lot to disconnect and hopefully doesn’t make you go to the other extreme (not caring at all) but at least only care during working hours in a fun way if possible.
outime··on Show HN: Get conversational practice in over 20 languages by talking to an AI
Pretty cool. Special thanks for offering Finnish.
outime··on Tell HN: My Hacker News app (HACK) is sort of broken this afternoon
I have no idea about iOS restrictions but wouldn’t it be easier to build an API that does the parsing for the app and if something breaks in the process, you get notified and fix it ASAP instead of having to push an update and wait for it to get approved? Hosting would be free or super cheap if you use Cloudflare Workers or similar places.
outime··on ‘I’d rather eat an actual burger’: plant-based meat’s sizzle fizzled in the US
I humbly suggest to change your communication efforts towards your cause. It'll only cause rejection if you keep using pretentious statements.
outime··on ‘I’d rather eat an actual burger’: plant-based meat’s sizzle fizzled in the US
I was going to post a similar comment to yours. I'm not vegetarian/vegan but I've been very keen on testing alternatives to meat and dairy and I completely agree with your statement:

>Part of the problem is that deliberately positioning the fake meat products as, well, "fake meat" will forever create unreasonable expectations by way of comparisons.

Look, I have eaten some patties which were made of very tasty vegetarian/vegan combinations (lentils, beans, carrots, etc) and I do enjoy these a lot. Now if you call them a replacement for meat patties it's just not gonna work out. Even the ones that really try hard to imitate meat just don't cut it in my opinion (plus all the processing and ingredients they use to imitate meat is worrying to me). Are they bad? No they aren't, they're delicious and I can take them anyday as long as they're somewhat healthy and nutritious but please don't call them "fake meat", they're not and they must not be marketed that way because it'll make people reject them, which is probably part of the failure we're seeing now.

outime··on Ask HN: It's always the people isn't it?
Not really but of course being surrounded by good people you can learn from can make me stay despite other things not being optimal.
outime··on Ask HN: Inherited the worst code and tech team I have ever seen. How to fix it?
The challenge is quite interesting IMHO but the fact that the budget is tight and the team is a tiny mess of junior people with "resistance to change" makes me see the burnout would be around the corner.
outime··on Tell HN: Make your company have a contact page
I literally found the ticket system in seconds by googling "meetup contact" (second result for me). Not sure what this post is about to be honest.
outime··on My life got quite a lot better when I went back to an old school Nokia
What about receiving an automated SMS or phone call when an incident is created? That's anyway how I usually do it even though I'm using a smartphone.
outime··on Show HN: MyNotifier – Simple Notifications
Also the second screenshot shows "Invalid Date" in the notification popup.
outime··on Doyouneedkubernetes.com
K8s gets as much hate as SPAs if no more - already mentioned few days ago [1] - to the point that a dumb webpage with no arguments whatsoever reaches the frontpage. It'd be great if we could stick to good discussion and avoid such hyperbolic flamebaits.

outime··on Ask HN: How do I stop being used?
This happened to me when I was a teenager because I was interested in computer stuff from an early age and so people would see me as a free resource until I decided to charge them except to my very close family and actual best couple friends (who always wanted to pay me and I had to end up accepting couple beers in exchange anyway).

It all comes down to learning how to say no (in other words, setting boundaries) and only sacrifice your time for the people who deserve it. You don’t owe anything to most and if they stop talking to you because you didn’t want to work for free for them then they aren’t worth keeping around IMHO.

There’s nothing wrong about shedding people if they’re only giving you trouble even if you’ve known them for years so don’t be afraid to do so.

outime··on Scaleway price 'harmonization' (mostly increases)
I recommend LowEndTalk & LowEndBox to find cheaper providers if one wants to have some VPS to play around.
outime··on State is hard: why SPAs will persist
You're not alone. SPAs have their place, they're not alternatives to fully SSR pages - they're simply different. There are other examples of such visceral reactions here, for example K8s.

I personally don't bother discussing these things anymore here as a big portion of the HN crowd just dislikes it and there isn't much left to reason about despite having countless examples of nice implementations around the world.

outime··on Ubuntu 22.04's new OOM kiler closes Firefox while in use
The 90s web that loaded an ActiveX which would automatically screw up your whole computer? Popups with ads that move around and cannot be closed? BSOD after entering the wrong website? Half of the browser window filled with toolbars? It seems that rose-colored glasses are very present here.
outime··on Joseph Stiglitz: 'We should shut down the cryptocurrencies'
I'm afraid that's exactly how it's gonna turn out.
outime··on Ask HN: Which discontinued app or tool would you still like to use today?
There’s a Windows game called Argentum Online which is still actively developed in VB 6.0 under various forks. So at least that isn’t dead dead.
outime··on Minikube quickly sets up a local Kubernetes cluster on macOS, Linux, and Windows
Yep, kind is IMHO the way to go for most of the use cases. Really fast to set up new clusters and low resource consumption due to its nature.
outime··on Psychedelics and mental illness
Not OP but if I read between lines it might mean that it is way cheaper to give people some soma than addressing the actual root problems certain societies have.
outime··on Ask HN: Do not rent and live in basements
This could be good advice for people who are cheap but otherwise I can imagine most of the people living in basements do so because they don't have money to live elsewhere.
outime··on Ask HN: Best Gmail Alternative?
>I keep seeing threads on HN about

Gmail alternatives. I’m not sure if anybody else noticed this but every week or every other week there’s the same thread about alternatives. Sure I can flag it but I don’t get it, the suggestions are always exactly the same, no difference whatsoever. Is it so that people just don’t like to use the search function?

outime··on Tell HN: Reddit accounts cancellation/suspension caused by VPN usage
I got banned from around 15 popular subreddits (which I didn't read or participate anyway) for posting a comment in r/conspiracy which wasn't even related to the vax. There are thousands of cases like yours and mine and worst of all: it was fully automated. You literally posted anything into certain subreddits and you get autobanned in communities that aren't even related by any metric.

I didn't bother appealing since I don't care about those but it felt really dumb and perhaps a clear sign of Reddit's end times.

outime··on Ask HN: Alternate Email hosting to G Suite
From all the places I'm surprised Fastmail gets so much praise in HN. I'm sure it's a nice paid service but it's based in Australia which is notorious for being a disaster for those who care for privacy. There are countless posts in Hacker News about this (just search Australia + privacy) and here's one [1] that's specifically addressing Fastmail and its situation over there.

I'm not against Fastmail specifically but I'd definitely consider services based in countries which do better privacy-wise.

outime··on The Great Resignation? More Like the Great Renegotiation
>Constant articles and such with very little data. Very frustrating as a reader.

Very personal opinion ahead (and not tailored to this specific topic): that's most journalism for you. They're not here to "inform the citizen" as a noble mission. Most of the things the press publishes are greatly exaggerated and dramatic to evoke different emotions to the reader which are closely tied to an agenda. The fix is IMHO easy: stop consuming such media once you find such disparities instead of reading again and again about the same and other topics, because they'll most likely lie/exaggerate in everything else and at the end, you'll be happier and better informed by not filling your memory with bs.

Edit: typo with->which

outime··on Ask HN: Staying fit whilst working from home?
While I agree that you don't need to consume or overengineer these things, I admit that doing these things on a different place and somehow committing some money to it kind of forces people to keep doing it whereas doing it at home may make it boring (for some people) and you stop altogether.
outime··on No Place to Hide – U.K. campaign against end-to-encryption encryption
I don't believe the UK government for this matter is naive. They know very well what and why they are doing this and it's the same strategy used in different parts of the world. It's not new and there's no need to come up with anything new because it works so well and you can justify trading privacy (or even more important things) for security this way no matter how little sense this makes.

I do think that it's naive to think that one of the most important countries in the world with a rather effective intelligence service and a lot of smart people everywhere in the state is naive. I really don't think the UK government believes that if they remove encryption from popular chat apps the tiny percentage of population that might use it for evil purposes will be caught instead of, you know, moving to a different mechanism.

outime··on Show HN: Tact – A simple chat app for iOS, iPadOS and macOS
I’m sure this is going to sound too negative but I just can’t see how a paid chat app that only works on Apple devices is going to work out. Those two things alone are showstoppers for most of the people. And as others have said, iMessages already exists and offers the same and IMHO does it well (and free).
outime··on Vivaldi: Violating CoC on forum may close your email account
I suppose it's the same as using your Google account and leaving a bannable comment (or just one that automation considers like such) in YouTube, Google Maps or the old Google+ - you'll lose access to your email account as well. It just highlights how important it is to have essential stuff like email separated from bundles like Google, Vivaldi or any other company that can finish your virtual existence all of the sudden.
