nullify88··on Microsoft's latest Windows 10 updates come with nasty printer bugs
> https://kb.ucla.edu/articles/hp-laserjet-1012-and-windows-10

As stated in a previous comment, you're installing drivers for another model of printer. So I find it unreasonable to believe there wont be problems down the line even if they appear to be working.

HP has a Universal Print Driver that will support your printer and be compatible with Windows 10 with out resorting to installing drivers meant for another printer. Not exactly a high prority test case for Microsoft.

nullify88··on Microsoft's latest Windows 10 updates come with nasty printer bugs
I believe the issue is that since the printer is so old, there is no driver available for Windows 10. Checking the HP site, the latest is for Vista from 2008, so dragons are to be expected when you run with drivers on an OS that isnt listed as being compatible with significant architectural changes.

I dont think its fair to blame the OS here and in this case you may get a better experience, and maybe security (removing those old HP background processes running with elevated privileges) using microsofts generic postscript printer drivers.

> Preseeding is a beautifully built technology but it isn’t very relevant today

I think preseeding is still relevant with the advent of container / immutable operating systems such as CoreOS, and perhaps Nix too. The technology has changed and overlaps with configuration management tooling, but only handles a small part of a servers lifecycle giving room for a proper cm tool.

nullify88··on NextDNS Is Out of Beta
> Another thing I didn't like, which I mean makes sense, but in order to label a device you need to run their client.

I hope I understood you correctly. A feature recently introduced (Or perhaps I just recently noticed) is the ability to label devices without using their clients, you can do this by prefixing your unique DNS endpoint with the label and terminating it with a hyphen.

Eg, Phone-xxxxx.dns.nextdns.io

Sublime Text 4 is in beta and active development. AFAIK the latest build is 4074 released 28th April 2020.

I guess that is the default experience with no tweaks? Any success with TLP?
nullify88··on New York Times phasing out all 3rd-party advertising data
Strange. I'd expect you to be hitting at least 40-50fps on 1080 High settings in R6 Siege with those specs. Minimum system requirements for R6 Siege is an i3. Maybe because its a laptop you are either hitting thermal limits or you have significantly less VRAM than the desktop counterpart.
nullify88··on SubEthaEdit 5 – native open-source text editor with live collaboration feature
With all the work from home going on, I recently discovered Visual Studio Code Live Share which has been pretty awesome for pair programming and pair debugging. It even has built in text and voice chat. Terminals can be read only or read/write by people sharing, I can browse their workspace and folders and it knows to attribute the author of a commit to a remote editor.

We were initially very excited about it and while we don't use it as much as we did, to me its essential for doing remote collaboration / pair stuff.

nullify88··on Maza – Like Pi-hole but local and using your operating system
> NextDNS is also further away, meaning there will be much more latency for all your DNS queries. It is usually best to run your own resolver, or have a local DNS server in your network.

But your local PI resolver would likely have to pass on your request to an upstream DNS server if it isn't cached. Although its negligible, this extra hop would add latency. This is assuming the result isn't in the OS or browser DNS cache.

nullify88··on Maza – Like Pi-hole but local and using your operating system
For both Windows and Linux, you'll need to run Stubby (https://dnsprivacy.org/wiki/display/DP/DNS+Privacy+Daemon+-+...) or some other similar proxy which runs a local DNS server and proxies requests over TLS or alternative.

Android 9 and later natively supports "Private DNS" which is DNS over TLS.

All work fine with NextDNS and I have multiple profiles for each hardware I use it on. Eg, I use more block lists on my phone than my other devices.

The Netflix app has additional benefits such as higher bitrate audio and multichannel 5.1 sound.

Also supports downloads and offline viewing.

nullify88··on Ebola Is Now a Disease We Can Treat
I've recently changed a habit of mine where I amass a huge list of bookmarks or files that I'll "read later". I've owned a Kindle for a while now and recently had the idea that I can use the sendtokindle extension to send and store my articles for offline reading. I find it's easier to read the content and my Kindle is usually with me for times I want to read unlike my laptop with all the weight and distractions that come with it.

nullify88··on Google Announces .new Domain Availability
Due to HSTS (It maybe preloaded in your browser), the browser internally redirects http://gist.new to https://gist.new. And then receives a 301 from the web server (which is cacheable) to redirect you to your final destination.

Edit: It is (https://hstspreload.org/?domain=gist.new)

nullify88··on PHP-FPM remote code execution bug exploited in the wild
I would suggest having a try_files in the .php location. Because it just takes someone sending a request to index.php for Nginx to process the request in a potentially vulnerable location block that doesn't have try_files.

You perhaps might not be vulnerable if you use an internal directive inside your .php location block.

nullify88··on Linux Kernel Fastboot [pdf]
I run Fedora on a Thinkpad X1C Gen 3. tlp[1] has been, by far, the best tool in optimising my power usage. powertop for some monitoring, as these days it recommends some less than ideal tunables, especially with regards to SATA power management ("med_power_with_dipm" vs "min_power" [2][3]).

Some modules also have blacklists that prevent certain power saving modes from being enabled. This is true for the snd-hda-intel module to prevent a well known popping sound. Since disabling the blacklist, I haven't encountered the issue however YMMV. Similarly to enable ASPM on the PCIE bus, I've had to force it via a kernel parameter.

With regards to the GPU, I noticed my Intel GPU can scale its frequency between 300mhz and 950mhz but the default minimum was set to 350mhz. Other such tweaks such as enabling frame buffer compression [4], can save you a few more watts.

While the Linux defaults does its best to be suitable across different hardware configurations, you'll have to meddle with many parameters to get it customised to your configuration, and that could bring some instability with it so exercise some caution.

Oh, and also be mindful of the apps you run. The Great Suspender for Chrome can save you some watts, cpu and memory by suspending tabs that are not in use. And switching to a light desktop such as Sway or i3 can also do wonders.

As I type this, my battery is reporting a draw of 3.1 watts, 30% battery remaining with 4:40 of operating time at the current workload.

nullify88··on What’s Next in Making Encrypted DNS-over-HTTPS the Default
Here's a whitepaper that did some benchmarks and a detailed analysis on it. Was posted on hn a few days ago. https://arxiv.org/abs/1907.08089

They test various network conditions with some results showing DoH and DoT loading webpages faster than udp dns (due to tcp timing out faster than udp on lossy connections )

This is unfortunate. I have symlinks in dropbox to sync certain application config and dot files on Linux. I guess I'll have to use a proper dot file solution or another tool.
nullify88··on GCP to introduce an additional charge for publicly addressed VM instances
Previously, Windows instances required a public IP address in order to connect to and retrieve a license from Googles KMS server. Looks like that has changed recently, and this news had me worried we'd have to pay extra for our Windows instances. So at least now I can save a few pennies and IP addresses.

nullify88··on How Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun punished the computers of the day [video]
Another RTS-FPS hybrid that comes to mind is Battlezone 1&2. It catered to a very niche audience back in the day (1998) which may have doomed it, but I remember playing a demo of it and being blown away by it. I play it every now and and again and I believe still has some active players online.

Wrt BZ2 a remastered version is available on GoG / steam. A few of the original developers have kept the game patched and compatible with todays hardware / software.

nullify88··on Electron 6.0
As ripcord is only free during the beta period, I don't think you'll find many "end users" who would want to pay for it. The vast majority of Discord users being Gamers with big disks and plenty of RAM. nullify88··on CERN migrates to open-source technologies
I came across a white paper years ago (2012/2013 ish) on how they used Icinga (An early but rapidly growing Nagios fork) and mod-gearman to monitor their ATLAS computing farm. At the time, as a newly appointed sysadmin, I was looking in to possible solutions that could scale well myself and their usage was very inspiring. Eventually deploying something similar where I'm still working now.

nullify88··on DoNotPay's new service auto-cancels free trials
Would you be in a country that Revolut operates in? Not exactly the same, but you can get "Virtual Cards" that is different from the physical card attached to your account. You can change this "Virtual Card" after each purchase so the card number changes. Your name is still attached to the card number but if you dispose after use, attempting any additional transaction on it will fail. This will catch these free trial out and other fraudulent activity caused by sharing card details with shady online businesses.
nullify88··on Mailchimp to Sendy: Cutting Email Costs
It sounds like a great idea for a potential feature request for Sendy and software like it.

SES uses SNS for bounces, complaints etc. So _really_ you need a http(s) endpoint that receives these notifications and can act on them in a way that you'd like. (Unsubscribing from a mailing list, analytics, etc).

nullify88··on Spotify shuts down direct music uploading for independent artists
It's unfortunate that the influence is becoming more and more apparent. Stories like this make me wonder what's to become of Spotify in the future. https://www.billboard.com/articles/business/8517869/when-you...

I've always thought Spotify could be the Steam of music: To bring artists and listeners together, but I now believe Bandcamps done more in that regard and Spotify might end up being a data harvesting tool for the labels.
