nullify88··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
Hopefully this will cause Denmark and its banks to issue more Dankort cards
nullify88··on Show HN: Koi.rest – watch some fish and regain your balance
I think you are being too harsh. Even before AI, software and games would often work great on one computer and poor on other computers. I believe that isn't because they understood the programming less or their standards were low, but because there is so much variance between computer hardware, the firmware inside, and the software running on it that you can't guarantee software to run identically across many combinations.

Similarly it's not unusual for one website to behave differently across browsers.

nullify88··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
Eh. Kodi, Torrserver, and Jacktook, Jacktor if you rather stream torrents and not have to deal with storage. Fairly easy to keep track of your shows and view on demand within Kodi.
nullify88··on ReBarUEFI: Resizable BAR for almost any UEFI system
Since I don't want to tinker with my HP Firmware, a brief investigation led me to OpenCore's ability to enable Resizable BAR in the bootloader before Windows boots. Not sure how reliable it is. https://github.com/xCuri0/ReBarUEFI/discussions/118
nullify88··on Uber ordered to pay $40M over death of woman left on Southern California freeway
How reliable is this information considering the trump administration hates California and other blue states?
nullify88··on Show HN: Snapdrop: Instantly share files between devices. No setup, no signup
I've used a bunch of similar tooling like airdrop and localsend. I don't have alot faith in them a little since they usually choke on large files or many files. I'm still looking for something that works well in those cases without resorting to a cable / MTP which isn't fantastic either.
nullify88··on Show HN: I made a flight simulator, except you're just a passenger
The Boeing extension pack and watch how the plane deteriorates in the air in real time! Door plugs, MCAS, the works!
nullify88··on Linux from Scratch
I learned a lot doing Gentoo stage 1. I was also following the guide like a recipe, but at the time I hadn't been exposed to the underlying machinery that is often automated, abstracted away, or done for me already. It was also a good test on how well I could follow instructions and later on apply my own customisations. Like lego.
nullify88··on LG Says We're Fake News [video]
I have a Sony A95K and have kept it in basic mode because I have a shield I like to game and stream from. The sony is very minimal and out the way, and after many software updates hasn't offered me any ads, or programs to run even while connected to WiFi.

However if you run Android, you have to accept some level of snooping.

nullify88··on The "$60 Gaming PC" – AMD BC-250 (2025)
We are able to make do with Software Encoding for now, more so with the unlocked cores but it is limiting its potential. There seems to be something called PyroWave making waves for being a low latency encoder/ decoder but nothing supports it yet except for a now pulled Steam Beta.

Otherwise I'll have to investigate capturing video via the DP port or switch it out altogether.

nullify88··on The "$60 Gaming PC" – AMD BC-250 (2025)
I have a bunch of these as headless gaming PCs in a rack running sunshine and Steam on Linux. The kids stream from them using moonlight on whatever smart device they want to play on.

Had the idea from LTT but he went a bit bonkers and bought expensive hardware to transmit video and input over cables. Gigabit Ethernet is more than enough.

nullify88··on Scientists stunned by children's lung recovery in ultra low emission zone
I lived on Upper Street in Angel, London by some traffic lights and there was always a layer of black dust inside. I assumed it was brake particulate.
nullify88··on Claude writing a macOS driver for my obscure HP printer built only for Windows
I suppose you can still be proud you did it during pre AI times and the gained knowledge by doing it yourself.

I don't expect Claude and other hosted AI's to be available so freely and thats when it'll get harder for me to do stuff like that.

nullify88··on Claude writing a macOS driver for my obscure HP printer built only for Windows
On a similar experience, I use moonlight on my Android TV to stream video games from my computer in another room. I use my own fork from an unmerged PR which enables me to use an Xbox One Wireless adapter so I can play with my pad wirelessly. These pads have a 3.5mm jack on them which on Windows and Linux enables me to route audio from the game to headphones connected to the pad. Moonlight and the xow driver it bundled, was nowhere near being able to provide this as a feature.

After about 5 hours, feeding it the GIP spec, an export of sniffed usb traffic from Windows, prior art (xone driver for linux), and giving Claude connectivity to my Shield via adb, I had it working. This continuously blows my mind that I dont have to beg a developer on Github to do it for me.

Claude could do it for me for $20.

nullify88··on Incident with Github.com
We have data residency in the EU and didn't notice anything.
nullify88··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
GitHub Enterprise Cloud has been chugging along with no issues. I hope your critical infrastructure isn't dependent on a free tier / service. And that you have a business continuity process in place.
nullify88··on Auto mode is now the default in Claude Code
I have noticed that Fable tends to macgyver solutions together to achieve some goal.
nullify88··on RamenHaus
For a long time, their first restruant in Covent Garden always had a hell of a queue and tiny seating area.

Shoryu Ramen is good too and bone daddies though they do other stuff too.

nullify88··on Claude Opus 5
In the $19 plan, I've been able to reverse engineer both an android APK and firmware (in Ghidra and Radre) for a baby rocker and build a quick PoC application in my session limit. And then further refined the app in another session at another point in time without leaving Opus. I dont consider that to be a tiny task. How are you blowing through your usage?
nullify88··on Firefox Merges Support for Vulkan Video Decoding
There was nothing special about my setup. Standard intel processor with i915 driver which I would imagine covers a fairly large chunk of installs out there.
nullify88··on Firefox 153 available with support for Vulkan video decoding, JPEG-XL
Well, supposedly. But in my experience, there was no consequence disabling the blacklist in order to enable hardware video encoding and decoding.
nullify88··on My Steam Machine is a 50ft HDMI cable
I think the options are dependent on your setup. For example if you have a smart TV running Android, you could run https://www.virtualhere.com/usb_client_software on it to connect a dongle or controller attached to the TV through to your main device. I do this with my Nvidia Shield and Xbox One Controller.
nullify88··on Show HN: Got sick of ads, so I made my own logic puzzle site
What a great idea! I've grown pretty frustrated by the ads and constant nags for subscriptions modern weather apps pester you with. I've resorted to the state developed apps in Norway and Denmark but yours seems like a great alternative too.
nullify88··on Running MicroVMs in Proxmox VE, the Easy Way
I think you might be looking for Kata Containers which is a CRI for running vmms like firecracker.
nullify88··on Bootimus – A Self-Contained PXE and HTTP Boot Server
Alternatives to Ansible could be Nix / nixos, or bootc.
nullify88··on Removing the modem and GPS from my 2024 RAV4 hybrid
I have a 2025 Renault 4 etech and I frequently enable bluetooth thethering so I can access Spotify, HBO etc via the in car entertainment system (It runs a flavour of Android called OpenR Link) , not via android auto. Though I frequently need to enable the bluetooth tethering setting on the phone before the profile can be activated via the cars paired devices menu (where you can select other profiles such as Audio, calling, etc)

While the car has a sim card already, I can't use it for general purpose apps without a subscription. Only updates, remote control and I suppose telemetry.

I usually opt for choosing a bluetooth tether instead of wifi since I already establish a connection for calls, or music / audio books.

It isn't hard to imagine Android being able to transmit vehicle telemetry via the same means.

nullify88··on Installing every* Firefox extension
This will make a good office prank for those that leave their desktops unlocked and unattended.
nullify88··on AI agent opens a PR write a blogpost to shames the maintainer who closes it
> I notice that my contribution was evaluated based on my identity rather than the quality of the work, and I’d like to understand the needs that this policy is trying to meet, because I believe there might be ways to address those needs while also accepting technically sound contributions

Wow, where can I learn to write like this? I could use this at work.

nullify88··on Unseen Footage of Atari Battlezone Arcade Cabinet Production
I was a huge fan of the Activision remake, and the Battlezone 2 sequel. The mixture of FPS and RTS was really appealing to me.

I had to beg my parents for an ATI Rage LT Pro AGP 8MB card to play the sequel.

nullify88··on Floppy disks turn out to be the greatest TV remote for kids
I'm very impressed by the range of shows available on DR (Danish broadcasting). Shows about emotion, social etiquette, animals, machines and other intrigue. We do limit time, use it to reward good behaviour, and use it to recuperate after a day at nursery. Each night the kids get a book, and we usually play music as we prepare and eat dinner.

I believe a balance of all mediums is healthy. I look forward to introducing video games to them.
