mvelie··on Cisco is abandoning the LoRaWAN space, and there's no lifeboat for IoT customers
We've used LoRaWAN and never used the Cisco equipment, we've always used software/hardware from https://www.machineq.com
mvelie··on Apple Removes Game Boy Emulator iGBA from App Store Due to Copyright Violations
Reading the article this appears to be more a rip off of GBA4iOS and being removed for that more so than apple not allowing the genre of emulators.

mvelie··on Bluetooth signals can be used to identify and track smartphones
Apple has added recently at least for the BTLE implementation an address randomization much like they did for wifi, details of which can be found here: https://support.apple.com/guide/security/bluetooth-security-...
mvelie··on Apple to bin apps that go three years without updates
It's not just that the software has gone years without updates, but also if there have been no or very few downloads. Reading the actual update from Apple: https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=gi6npkmf it states specifically "minimal download threshold — meaning the app has not been downloaded at all or extremely few times during a rolling 12 month period "
mvelie··on Akamai Edge DNS was down
Akamai believes they have it fixed. We've seen our traffic return to normal. https://twitter.com/Akamai/status/1418251400660889603
mvelie··on Ask HN: I've been promoted to Architect. What do I need to learn/do to excel?
For your #1 point our team has had great success using PlantUML for our diagrams. They can be easily output for slides or wiki pages, but it's all written in code so we can keep them in our git repo for tracking.
mvelie··on 0.30000000000000004
Swift also has decimal (so does objective-c) which handles this properly. See https://lists.swift.org/pipermail/swift-users/Week-of-Mon-20... to see how swift's implementation of decimal differs from obj-c.
mvelie··on Ask HN: What are unusual perks of a job?
Working at a theme park doing technology work, it allows for free access to the theme park (significant other included) and other theme parks in the area. Deep discounts are provided on merchandise and hotels in the area.
mvelie··on Ask HN: Can you get to AWS?
Looks to be because of: https://twitter.com/Axcelx/status/616058414746202113
mvelie··on Apple Increases Maximum App Size from 2GB to 4GB
Developers can also do images in resolution independent ways for certain types of image assets used in the apps, like icons. You wouldn't be able to do these for photos, but it would help.

Also for our app, when it first loads we detect your screen size and then download assets that match for that screen size only when needed.

mvelie··on Why iOS 8 Represents a New Kind of Challenge for Developers
This is the same as the jump from iOS 6 to iOS 7, except that was more UI code. It was difficult to support both and keep the correct look and feel between the apps without a lot of extra work, even more if you weren't using auto layout. The basic controls changed a lot and the change with the status bar still affects apps today.
mvelie··on Coinbase user emails and full names leaked
While that could be true, this list also includes the names; which would not be possible from what you're describing.
mvelie··on TestFlight Owner Burstly Acquired By Apple
It could also be that apple wanted the other part of Burstly which did advertising, to help support their iAd platform.
mvelie··on Chromecast now open to developers with the Google Cast SDK
I agree this might be nice for certain apps, say the Youtube app, where the whole purpose of the app is to show video to the user.

I write a bunch of apps right now that have the ability to show video has one of the many functions of the app. Having to put an icon like this on every screen would take up a lot of screen real estate and I think confuse a lot of our users.

mvelie··on Chromecast now open to developers with the Google Cast SDK
The sdk looks nice, but there's certain requirements, like putting the chromecast icon on EVERY screen off the app that is a little bit of a turnoff.
mvelie··on Show HN: Finally a legit way to search for broadband providers by zip.
I had a similar issue, typed in my zip code (32773) and it listed Summit Broadband with a 100mbps fiber connection. Looked at their site, they're close by (a couple cities over), but not in my area. Couldn't find anywhere to report the issue.
mvelie··on Transporter for Mac – easy access to your app’s metadata on iTunes Connect
Looks like this could be useful, if the app supported multiple apple id's it would make managing multiple accounts a lot easier than using the website.
mvelie··on Path fined $800,000 by FTC
Simple answer: Don't get information from kids under 13 unless you have parents permission. You must also have a privacy policy.

Complex answer: How you determine if the person is under 13 and how you get the parents permission can be done a lot of different ways. Some of the most popular is doing a test charge against a credit card number, assuming kids won't have those.

mvelie··on A user is trying to steal from us and I don't mind
I disagree, if I order something from a site and it says it'll ship and I don't get it, I would probably call, which would probably get everything fixed.

Since my card would never have been charged I don't think there's any fraud or legal actions that could occur.

mvelie··on OS X - Adjust the volume in 1/4 increments
There's an app called Boom that allows you to make the volume of things louder on OS X. Believe it's available on the app store.
mvelie··on Adobe giving away the whole of Creative Suite 2 for free
3 hours in and the link doesn't work.
mvelie··on Amazon EC2 currently down. Affecting Heroku, Reddit, Others
Amazon doesn't run their site off the same set of EC2 servers and systems that everyone else does. They just used their experience to build it.
mvelie··on Tweetbot for Mac is available in the App Store
Because of the token limit, I'm sure they don't want to offer a demo because that could cost them a token they might never get back.
mvelie··on A Letter from Tim Cook on Maps
There's a "report issue" button if you hit the bottom right corner of the map. It allows you to drop pins where issues are and gives free text fields to enter information.
mvelie··on Mac OS X 10.8.1 is out.
With multimonitor setup the apps are allowed to use those extra monitors while in full screen. You're supposed to be able to drag pieces of the apps into them if the app supports it.
mvelie··on Ask HN: What Windows 8 Metro apps are you working on?
Look at Facebook, they took the same route with their apps. The reviews on the app store were horrible, and it now appears they will be making a native version of the app.
mvelie··on The only way to get hold of a human at Google
If you're not paying them you're not the customer.
mvelie··on Google blocking all FastSpring stores
It seems like maybe customer sites should use a different domain than corporate data in order to keep things like this from affecting clients.
mvelie··on ESPN Developer Center
I work for a company that does the sports websites for a lot of college clients, we provide tons of rss feeds with scores, schedules, news, and all kinds of other information all for free. ESPN is in this to help themselves from it, not to get the information out there and help fans.
