mttjj··on Show HN: The Poetry Corner – A React Native app to read public domain poems
Looks nice, congrats on the launch. Two things that aren’t clear to me from the App Store page (I haven’t downloaded the app):

1. Why is account creation necessary? Why can’t I just store/sync my bookmarked poems with iCloud?

2. What the subscription is or does. The most recent change notes say that a Pro plan with ‘additional features’ was added but doesn’t elaborate beyond that.

mttjj··on Ask HN: Lesser-known sites for ebooks and audiobooks, as DRM-free as possible
https://libro.fm has been my go-to for audiobooks in the past. Bonus that it supports your local bookstore too.
mttjj··on How I clean my glasses
Pretty sure this is an automated word removal action by the HN submission form. There've been threads about the words that are filtered out by default. It comes down to trying to make titles less clickbait-y. Though I do agree that "How" does provide some important context in this case.
mttjj··on Ask HN: What phone(s) do you use?
iPhone 13 mini
mttjj··on Mendon, Missouri
Might be on Netflix in other countries, but it’s on AppleTV+ in the US.

(Also, if the live production is touring near you- go see it. I saw it live a few years ago and it was awesome!)

mttjj··on iPhone Costs by Region
> Brazil are paying big bucks

This is not a uniquely Apple problem. Blame this on the very high import duties on products imported into the country. There have been a few companies that have just left the region altogether as a result. Nintendo, for instance, completely stopped selling products in Brazil in 2015. They only just last year or the year before started selling the Nintendo Switch there. Still at a comparatively higher price.

mttjj··on Lost USB with 460k city residents’ personal data found
And I could name a half-dozen US government -.gov - websites that are downright terrible with respect to usability and security practices. Since when does Nintendo represent all of Japan?
mttjj··on Ask HN: Does anybody still use bookmarking services?
This is Mac only and I have no affiliation other than I like this developer but your request reminded me that he just launched this app: https://andadinosaur.com/launch-history-book
mttjj··on WTF Nextdoor? Over 130 clicks to disable email and push notifications?
Fastmail has first-class support for exactly what you want. Settings > Users & Aliases > + New Alias > "Show advanced preferences". There's a checkbox that says "Disable - Reject (bounce) all mail sent to this address (disable the alias) Disable a specific address when you have a wildcard (catch-all) alias."
mttjj··on WTF Nextdoor? Over 130 clicks to disable email and push notifications?
Do you prefer not to use a catchall alias[1] to prevent someone from just sending mail to garbage12345@yourdomain or for some other reason? I also use unique addresses for every website account I have but with the catchall, I don’t need to spend the 20 seconds to create the alias. It’s just automatically there. I can’t think of any issues I’ve had by using the wildcard alias.

mttjj··on Show HN: Tuc – When cut doesn’t cut it
I get that ‘tuc’ is just ‘cut’ backwards but I was kind of hoping it also stood for ‘the ultimate cutter’ or something like that. :)

In either case, very cool. Thanks for sharing. I’ll be using this for sure!

mttjj··on Apple and Google’s mobile browser ‘stranglehold’ may face UK investigation
Regarding YouTube ads on iPad: App called ‘Vinegar - Tube Cleaner’. Incredible. Best few bucks I’ve ever spent. It replaces the native YouTube player with the standard iOS video player which means you can also do system-wide picture-in-picture from the YouTube website. And I’ve not seen a YouTube ad in videos since I installed the extension.
mttjj··on Ask HN: Is Wordle still part of your daily routine?
Nah. I stopped playing after the web app that I saved on my iPhone’s Home Screen stopped working shortly after the NYT takeover. Actually, I think it still ‘worked’ but it changed to not be as minimalistic as the original Wordle web app and it lost my progress so I just dropped it. No hard feelings, I had fun with the game while it lasted.
mttjj··on How to stop junk mail
Call the post office. They will typically ask you to put your last name on the inside of your box and then they will tell the carrier to only deliver mail with your name (or ‘Current Resident’ obviously). If you’re lucky, your carrier is nice and respects that immediately. If you’re not lucky, you may have to call the post office every day for a month and complain like I did until they get the point. Eventually that kind of mail stopped.

I’m not sure what they do with all that mail that’s not addressed to me but I don’t really care. The point is I don’t have to see it.

This, along with the other tips in these comments (such as calling customer support lines and requesting removals) means I’m down to literally about one piece of junk mail per month these days.

mttjj··on GitHub Actions Is Down
Appears to be resolved now. Here’s the archived incident page: https://www.githubstatus.com/incidents/8xxms3q3qzgp
mttjj··on Apple’s Self Service Repair now available
As stated on Apple’s Self-Service support page (https://support.apple.com/self-service-repair): “The online store is operated by a third-party provider authorized by Apple to sell genuine Apple parts and tools.”

Seems similar to Apple’s trade-in program. The trade-in website is operated by a third-party and (in my experience) notoriously ‘un-Apple’.

mttjj··on Welcome to 'Le Monde' in English
That’s different than what’s posted in their FAQ for canceling. The FAQ suggests that it’s a simple button in the account settings.

mttjj··on Zooming into the Sun with Solar Orbiter
Easy to miss: Earth to scale in the top right of the photo.

And to think there are stars in our galaxy that would dwarf our Sun to the same degree! Pale Blue Dot indeed...

mttjj··on Ask HN: Software That Insults You?
I used it for about 30 minutes years and years ago and didn’t really like it but Carrot Weather for iOS fits this bill. I believe it insults the user and generally uses snarky language. That’s pretty much its whole schtick, so it’s not really a hidden feature or easter egg. I don’t even know if it provides any more accurate weather information than other apps; I think people use it mostly for its ‘character’.

Again, not really my thing but it’s featured on the App Store a lot and has won numerous awards.

mttjj··on The James Webb Space Telescope is working as well as astronomers dreamed
I’ve only been following this deployment as a casual observer (mostly from the NPR stories like this one) but I’m really excited to see what the future holds for this thing. It almost seems like it’s been too good to be true (great launch, flawless deployment of the mirrors, even reports that the lifespan of the device may be nearly double original estimates because of minimal fuel consumption) but I don’t think it is. Everything I see says this is the real deal!

Does anyone have a good site that I can bookmark (or RSS subscribe) that will post updates of discoveries and all the photos it’s taking as they come in?

(On a tangential note: the software engineer in me is insanely jealous that something this complex has gone so smoothly. Must be better at writing unit tests than I am or something… yeah, that’s probably it.)

mttjj··on Ask Apple to compensate for a screen protector used on a new but faulty iPhone?
No. Apple didn’t force you to put a screen protector on your phone. That was voluntary on your part.

If Apple’s responsible for this then how far does it go? Should Apple then also give you some sort of compensation for the fuel you expended driving back to the Apple Store that you otherwise wouldn’t have had to if your phone was not defective? What about the general wear and tear on your vehicle for the extra trip? (Or if you don’t drive then the cost of the bus/subway pass for the trip.) Or perhaps they should compensate you for your time. Maybe you had to take off work a bit early. Or you gave up something else to go to the Apple Store to return the device.

You claim it’s ‘not uncommon’ to receive a defective phone these days (I’d like to see some proof to back that up but that’s not the point here) so why not wait to put a screen protector on until you know you have a non-defective phone?

You’d probably have better luck just sending a polite email to the screen protector manufacturer and explain the situation. As the other commenter said, these things are cheap. I’d be willing to bet that the manufacturer would be willing to send you a discount or even just a whole new protector for the sake of brand goodwill.

mttjj··on Ask HN: How to help an engineering team come to a consensus on best practices?
This is the right answer. And I’ll go one step further: Discuss it, dictate it, then automate it. (Sorry, couldn’t find another alliterative word.) My point being: whenever possible roll these best practices into build tools (auto formatters, style checkers, static analysis, etc) and then fail builds if they violate these standards. That way it’s impossible for engineers to get them wrong.

There are definitely things that can’t _yet_ be automated like this but do as much as you can.

We still encourage discourse on our standards if engineers have opinions about them but you’ll never get widespread adoption without some sort of enforcement.

mttjj··on Ask HN: Registrar Horror Stories?
No, I’ve never had to contact support. But I see they have a phone number. As much as I dislike taking on the phone, I feel like having phone support is still actually a good sign. Most of the time when I send emails to companies for support it’s a 2-3 day turnaround time and they ask the same questions over and over. Sometimes I just want to talk to someone on the phone and get my problem solved quickly.
mttjj··on Ask HN: Service to find minimal set of streaming providers?
This was my thought too (about the API part). From my experience, the TV app on Apple devices has a pretty good search and it shows you all the services a show or movie is available on- even the ones you aren’t subscribed to. For example, if I search ‘Modern Family’, it tells me I can buy seasons 1-11 on iTunes, watch seasons 1-11 on Hulu, watch seasons 1-11 on Peacock, watch season 1 on the ABC app, season 7 on the NBC app, and for some reason also watch specifically season 7 on 6 other apps (Bravo, Syfy, USA, among others).

I really doubt Apple has a public endpoint for these searches and data but I also have never really looked. The point is they’ve done the scraping; they have the data. If someone can leverage it and do the curation, I can see a really useful product.

mttjj··on Ask HN: What the easiest and cheapest way for me to set up email?
Another vote for Fastmail. You literally just set up an alias of *@yourdomain.xyz and any ‘arbitrary’ address will auto routed to your inbox (amazon@yourdomain.xyz, google@yourdomain.xyz, yourmom@yourdomain.xyz, etc). All of those will immediately become valid addresses without having to explicitly set those aliases. I think this is exactly what you want?
mttjj··on Twitter makes it harder to choose the old reverse-chronological feed
Tweetbot if you’re on iOS. I’ve used it for probably close to a decade and nothing compares IMO. Always chronological timeline, no ads whatsoever, filters, mutes, etc. It’s just great. They recently moved to a subscription model (I know, I know) but it’s only like $5/year and way worth it. In the past, major versions were usually a $10-$20 upgrade price. Ever since they moved to this model the rate of updates and new features has really ramped up, too.
mttjj··on Ask HN: Registrar Horror Stories?
Do you want horror stories or do you want recommendations for registrars? Your title and post content are conflicting.

In either case, I don’t have any horror stories. But I can recommend Hover. To be fair, I really don’t do anything beyond the basics with my registrar. I have 3 domains. One points to a GitHub pages destination. The second simply redirects to the first. And the third is configured as my email domain on Fastmail. But in the 5+ years I’ve been using Hover for those domains, I’ve never had any issues. And renewals are always made known way in advance with many reminders.

mttjj··on Apple Event March 8, 2022
The iPhone 14 mini doesn’t exist so I’m not sure how it can be “going away”. As for the 13 mini, where’s your source that says it’s being discontinued as opposed to the ‘mini’ line just simply not continuing after the 13’s lifespan?
mttjj··on Ask HN: Mail app, respond from custom alias address
Unfortunately not possible on either macOS Mail nor iOS/iPadOS Mail. It’s been a frustration for me for years. Therefore, I use Mail as an email reader and then switch over to Fastmail when I need to reply to something.

Admittedly, I despise email so this switching of apps isn’t too bothersome for me (I rarely ever have to compose email) but it still would be nice if Apple enhanced Mail with this feature.
