mediocrejoker··on Ask HN: Resources for introverted devs to learn workplace politics?
Maybe you could write more than three words about your experience and what positive suggestions you have for OP (ie. not "here's what bad advice" and instead "here is some good advice")

Was soccer really the thing that helped you?

mediocrejoker··on Privacy not included: Holiday gift list for privacy and security
Who gets to decide what is a minor issue? I think Mozilla has had a couple of privacy missteps lately so perhaps they should not be casting stones.

Just to play devil's advocate, does Fitbit Versa share your information with third parties for any reason, expected or otherwise?
mediocrejoker··on MacBook Air 2018 Teardown
Until a team with resources comparable to the OS X team puts in the effort to polish some Ubuntu derivative and make it work flawlessly with one or a few particular hardware configurations, Apple will still have an advantage that many are willing to pay a premium for.
mediocrejoker··on Apple walks Ars through the iPad Pro’s A12X system on a chip
Kind of ironic that, had Apple not hired Anand away from running Anandtech, they would probably still be the most respected tech outlet.
mediocrejoker··on Show HN: A platform for women to crowd-source advice in confidence
How does this differ from something like eg. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskWomen/
mediocrejoker··on Apple Used to Be an Inventor. Now It’s Mainly a Landlord
I know you're being sarcastic but the range on my AirPods is greater than 30ft, down the hall and two rooms over.

Do you and your wife live underground, in an active coal mine? If not you must admit that your experience is atypical for that computer.
mediocrejoker··on IBM acquires Red Hat
Not trying to nit pick but I am among the group who did not realize there is a distinction between sysV init and RC files.

Is it possible to use one without the other?

mediocrejoker··on FT8 – Tipping Point for Ham Radio?
Thanks that makes it more understandable.
mediocrejoker··on FT8 – Tipping Point for Ham Radio?
What is FT8 and why is it controversial with hams?
mediocrejoker··on Walking Through the Official Document on China' Social Credit System
It would be great if somebody could translate this article, since the commentary doesn’t make a lot of sense if you can’t read the source material.
mediocrejoker··on Cannabis is legal in Canada: What you need to know
Except in this case the consumption could have happened years prior, as opposed to being actively intoxicated.

edit: not saying I agree with Dubai's policies.

mediocrejoker··on Globally, Almost Four Out of Ten Music Consumers Are Pirates
I wonder if another reason to prefer FLAC to MP3 is if you ever want to convert the MP3s to another lossy format (perhaps multiple times), is there a loss of quality associated with converting one lossy format to another multiple times?

It's nice to have a lossless format because you can always get lossy from it, but you can't do the opposite.

mediocrejoker··on New Evidence of Hacked Supermicro Hardware Found in U.S. Telecom
How would the government get in contact with the engineers who discovered the hack without going through their managers, the CISO, etc. ?
mediocrejoker··on New Evidence of Hacked Supermicro Hardware Found in U.S. Telecom
Where is the 6-terminal claim from?
mediocrejoker··on One of Bloomberg’s sources told them Chinese spy chip story “didn’t make sense”
Did you mean to reply to the 9to5mac article about the Bloomberg hardware expert Joe Fitzpatrick concerns about the Supermicro story? If so I do not understand your comment
mediocrejoker··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
Privacy and security, while related, are not the same thing.
mediocrejoker··on Voice control engine that runs fully in the browser using WebAssembly
Serious question, how is that working so far?

I’d love to have Alexa/Google hone functionality but I’m not comfortable having a device made by those companies always listening in my home.

Really looking forward to when a product using Mozilla’s tech is available.

mediocrejoker··on Microsoft suspends Windows 10 update, citing data loss reports
This is how some versions of android work. If a new update partition fails to boot, it falls back to the old one automatically.
mediocrejoker··on The iPhone XS and XS Max Review: Unveiling the Silicon Secrets
Do you really want anyone with a helmet to be able to unlock it?
mediocrejoker··on Bloomberg’s chip story reveals murky world of national security reporting
I can't see how Amazon could cooperate with the FBI investigation without informing the FBI-veteran CISO
mediocrejoker··on Making sense of the alleged Supermicro motherboard attack
Are you basing this off the photo in the Bloomberg article that shows a small (0402?) SMT package with three terminals?

I wonder if that's an actual photo of the chip in question.

mediocrejoker··on The iPhone XS and XS Max Review: Unveiling the Silicon Secrets
Just speculating but surely it must have something to do with the entire stack being designed under one roof, no? Having the kernel devs be able to walk across the campus and ask the hardware guys what a register is for must speed up development immensely.
mediocrejoker··on The Big Hack: How China Used a Tiny Chip to Infiltrate Amazon and Apple
At least in the case of Amazon, the denial is published under the name of the CISO, Steve Schmidt, who previously worked for the FBI for a decade.

Not saying he's not lying but it definitely raises the stakes.

mediocrejoker··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a junior software developer?
Don't be afraid to ask questions or admit that you don't know the answer to something.

Asking questions like "How does this work" can be the fastest way to learn.

mediocrejoker··on Announcing flicker-free boot for Fedora 29
I agree with another comment that said they want the pretty picture when it works and the text dump only when something has gone wrong. The best of both worlds.
mediocrejoker··on AttackDefense is giving free access to their online cybersecurity lab
It says "Email: (only valid company, government and educational institute addresses will be allowed for Beta access)"

Is this open to the general public?

mediocrejoker··on iOS 12 released
Can you elaborate on what you mean by "e2e was found to be flawed"? Is the paper available online?
mediocrejoker··on Nextspace – NeXTSTEP-like desktop environment for Linux
I think it stems from a logic fallacy that goes something like this:

If a GUI makes a program easier to use, then by using it, I am indicating that I am less technical.

It's not usually stated explicitly, but it's a pervasive attitude. IMHO, even highly technical users can benefit and be more productive from well thought out interface design. It's not like (most) grandmothers are suddenly going to use Visual Studio because it's got a GUI.
