lkiernan··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Home ovens are also just low quality ovens. Not a good analogy.

Air fryers should really be called individual ovens. They’re basically the same but more efficient

lkiernan··on The cold hard truth about electric vehicles in winter
If you put them in convenient places then ICE cars will also park there and not be connected.
lkiernan··on Web Graphics Done Right
I haven't dealt with this volume of images but Cloudinary will auto convert and serve the correct image format
lkiernan··on Ask HN: What is broken with job hiring processes?
Job-posters lie, job-seekers lie.
lkiernan··on Show HN: SponsorBlock – Skip sponsorship segments of YouTube videos
Seems to be an unpopular opinion but I'm on board with this. I pay for YouTube premium so that I don't have to watch ads (on TV/phone) and I feel railroaded whenever somebody stops their video to talk about a product that are paying them to do so.

I manually skip these always if I'm paying attention. I hope this shows in their analytics. I include "buy my tshirt" and "look I have another channel where I interview my 5 year old" in this.

lkiernan··on Do not tell your expected salary. Let a company make an offer first
You can talk about their range though. No hard feelings if they can't afford you.
lkiernan··on Show HN: I replaced Google Analytics with simple log-based analytics
How do I know what physical trackers are being used before entering a physical location? I use my eyes.

Business often count foot fall with IR or laser; it's generally on the door. How do I know that using a businesses with cameras claiming to only count traffic are not actually gathering a whole lot more information to use/sell/change their mind later?

I have no skin in this game but the original comment was more focused on "we've decided to bypass your adblocker because we feel that our interests outweigh yours"

lkiernan··on Ask HN: What happened to Pinboard?
You may not need this, but I replaced the Safari ext with https://github.com/spamwax/alfred-pinboard-rs

Requires Alfred, which I think is fairly common!

lkiernan··on Monzo, a U.K. challenger bank, raises £85M Series E
Depending on what you mean by "share costs", https://monzo.me/ is still a thing.

If it must be you topping up via card and you can't transfer traditionally, Starling stil have the ability and I prefer it/them overall.

lkiernan··on A Week on the Wrist: Apple Watch Series 4
Not to denounce the tech but if the song skips I can be fairly confident I was accurate. Dragging my finger blindly around seems likely to have adverse effects.
lkiernan··on The war between Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple
I'm overlooking the easy "It's easy for me so it's easy for everyone" because I'm interested what phone you use?
lkiernan··on David Cameron announces resignation
FWIW you don't, the level of debt some people have is staggering.
lkiernan··on The effects of living in a poor neighborhood
My initial reaction to your comment was along the lines of

> Do you consider how a black person might feel writing it? It seems somewhat necessary to bring up past persecutions.

I had likened this to swearing to highlight emotional intent. However I have no idea how that word affects some people. I'm just a white guy who is in no position to have an opinion on whether this is okay and was wrong to belittle it.

lkiernan··on The effects of living in a poor neighborhood
Because he said the N-word? Come on.

Words have power and these words are strong. And they should be, because the response is directed at complete ignorance.

This kind of reaction feels quite closed-minded, working on racism-as-a-checklist.

lkiernan··on Ask HN: Anyone making a living off of desktop applications?
GDP per capita in India is $1,498.87 though
lkiernan··on Why you shouldn't exercise to lose weight
Actually you'll lose muscle weight by cutting calories just fine
lkiernan··on Ask HN: Where are 150k to 200k salary job in Silicon Valley?
I think this is fairly relevant for any bartering you may do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xSe604627c
lkiernan··on Aaron Swartz died three years ago today
Could you have picked a better thread to make some irrelevant rant?

To address your only relevant question; I think he may have enjoyed interacting with the very smart people here. He also joined (merged?) the reddit team through ycom.

lkiernan··on Tell HN: I’d like to sponsor your passion project
This is a cool idea. You have my respect.

Are you offering any guarantees? Can anybody be worried about relying on this income only to be dropped like many NY resolutions in March?

Is your "value to the universe" linked to your own generosity, or the projects available?

lkiernan··on Show HN: CodeUpStart – Learn Python/Flask by Cloning Kickstarter
The site pages load for me, but not the linked-to page. Click the logo.
lkiernan··on Focus by Firefox, a Content Blocker for iOS
It feels excessive to call this misleading. The web browser team within Mozilla must be pretty well placed to be significant in creating an app for mobile web browser experiences.
lkiernan··on Elon Musk: Only a Carbon Tax Will Accelerate the World's Exit from Fossil Fuels
"CEO says he has your best interests at heart" is a fairly common line though.
lkiernan··on Large analysis finds that low-fat diets have low impact
Humans _were_ well adapted to protect their health. Now they're adapted to eat when it's available and conserve energy if possible.

If not on a "diet", are prone to overeating, weight gain and subsequent health problems.

And possibly died.

lkiernan··on YouTube Red, a $9.99 Site-Wide Ad-Free Subscription with Play Music
Wouldn't a Google search of this branding have done the trick?
lkiernan··on Posture for a Healthy Back
In case anybody cares, IMO it's a great book but not a great read!
lkiernan··on Posture for a Healthy Back
Note: Don't only work your back if you're asking as a beginner.

Deadlifts will work your entire core better than most other exercises. make sure you research correct form beforehand.

lkiernan··on Ask HN: Do companies accept self-taught programmers?
Top results suggest this is useless to the HN-centric environment

Success Coach, therapist, management

Admin, service tech

lkiernan··on Tell HN: Entrepreneurs, make sure you are getting guaranteed wins in life
Just in case this matters in the future: Lyle McDonald
lkiernan··on Four-day work week – Lessons learned
Retirees, students, the unemployed and the travelling businessmen/self employed that have the ability to fit a couple of hours into the middle of a workday. People that work in retail/service jobs that don't necessarily work a generic Monday-Friday. Night workers. People at companies with flexi-hours.

That said, I'd love to balance my work with the ability to not stand in queues for shops because I can only go at the same time as the majority of other people. I do much of my food shopping as close to midnight as possible and buy most other things online to avoid the crowds.

Passed a certain (lowish) threshold of income, I'd almost universally rather less hours than more money.

lkiernan··on I quit the tech industry
Can you not pay yourself in dividends?
