kaibee··on Chief executive of collapsed crypto fund Hyperverse does not appear to exist
Marketing is like cryptocurrency, it isn't inherently evil, but... only just.
kaibee··on 23andMe tells victims it's their fault that their data was breached
> see if there's enough time for this code or if I should wait for the next one, type the 6 digits into the site...

In my experience on most services (not sure about paypal specifically) there's a grace period where a code that just 'expired' is still valid for another ~10-30 seconds? So... at least you can skip that part.

kaibee··on Chief justice centers Supreme Court annual report on AI's dangers
No, I don't think acting ability should factor into sentencing decisions.
kaibee··on The I Hate AI License
> Besides, rather than vacuuming up exisiting data future resources might be better spent on creating bespoke datasets with user consent and content licensing baked in from the start.

Not mutually exclusive.

kaibee··on Japan Goes All In: Copyright Doesn't Apply to AI Training
At that direct level yeah probably, and I do think copyright is dumb and should be if not abolished, limited to 20 years or whatever. That said, imagine training a network from scratch entirely on Disney's catelog. Even if that model is then prompted to generate new characters, it seems weird to say that Disney's copyright wasn't infringed.
kaibee··on Japan Goes All In: Copyright Doesn't Apply to AI Training
> "zip up copyrighted images using a nn" is trek level technobabble.

Look up 'overfitting', neural-network based compression, etc. or that paper that used zip compression as a neural-network basically. Farthest thing possible from being 'technobabble' once you understand how inextricably linked compression and 'understanding' is.

kaibee··on Website search hurts my feelings
Newegg had (has? haven't used in a while) very good search categories for PC hardware.
kaibee··on US utility firms offer builders cash/trips to fit new homes with gas appliances
This might be a problem with your range. I bought a house recently with a new flipper-grade electric range and the first time I used the large burner on it, the amount of heat it put out completely eclipsed what the range in my previous apartment did. The only difference is that the new one has a glass top. On the high setting I can't even bring my hand within 6 inches of the burner once its up to temperature.
kaibee··on New York’s attorney general says SiriusXM’s cancellation process is illegal
They can/will send you to collections.
kaibee··on Weak-to-Strong Generalization
A safe language model is one that won't get you sued/on the news. Ethics has nothing to do with it.
kaibee··on Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use?
I'm less likely to commit to using something if I'm going to have to decide to pay for it sooner. I would try offering a month or two free and see how many people commit to using it and over what timeframe. You probably want people to be invested in the app, such that it becomes worth it for them to pay because it would be cogitatively expensive to switch. A week is definitely not enough time to build that kind of habit.
kaibee··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
EGS only loses money because they have to buy their customers by giving away free games, to try to dislodge Steam's position. The infrastructure costs of EGS cannot be that high.

kaibee··on Sequential modeling enables scalable learning for large vision models
So this is artificial general intelligence, right?
kaibee··on Booking.com users angry at firm's response to hacks
I haven't seen what the website(s) the scammers sent the users to looks like, but this is the kind of thing I could even see myself falling for, specifically because its a level of jank that would not be surprising from the industry.
kaibee··on Show HN: Dobb·E – towards home robots with an open-source platform
Actually, this is why it's such a great business opportunity, see you have to buy a 2nd robot that cleans 1st robot and then a 3rd robot to clean the 2nd and so on.

More seriously, Stretch actually looks pretty straight forward so I could imagine a combo-charging/dock/cleaning station where it can swap tools (ie, grab a vacuum, drop off mop, etc) and get cleaned by the cleaning station. Also once the robot is in a more finalized version, its not unthinkable to make one that is waterproof enough to go through a carwash type device.

> universe were just so that all of history would happen to lead to you typing that message, and me responding to it, solely by the physical interactions of particles.

You're kinda committing a conjunctive fallacy w/ some anthropic bias. The thing you're not seeing is the infinite similar multiverses that would look indistinguishable to you and you need to remember that the known universe is, very big and the rest of it could be infinite. I don't know how big that number is, but its a lot more complicated than 'this is the only way this could have happened'.

kaibee··on A Science of Life Without Free Will by Robert Sapolsky
Human history would certainly have been different if the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs hadn't free-will'd itself into an extinction event I guess.

> Right. And let's not forget that any such 100-line program would not be—in any meaningful sense—written by anybody,

Its perfectly meaningful. If I'm hiring a programmer I know that the mindstate of the one who did the physical action of typing that program is arranged such that they can write useful code for me. Whether that is the result of free will or a chain of causality leading back to the big bang doesn't matter.

The n'th digit of pi is also opaque to me without running a program.
kaibee··on A Science of Life Without Free Will by Robert Sapolsky
> If free will doesn't exist, we can't not punish people. By definition.

What? You can still change your mind/update beliefs after being presented with new evidence, in fact if you're being rational, you actually have no choice but to do so. I suppose in some sense, the most 'free will' action is to choose to ignore evidence that would change your beliefs.

kaibee··on A Science of Life Without Free Will by Robert Sapolsky
You're misunderstanding. You can hold that the killer isn't 'morally' responsible, ie: deserves to be tortured for their crime, but still imprison them indefinitely for the good of everyone else.
kaibee··on A Science of Life Without Free Will by Robert Sapolsky
The problem is that word games have real consequences. Word games can dehumanize groups and make it easier to justify atrocities. If free will exists, then retributive torture is easy to morally justify.

6D Chess is apparently realizing that AGI is not 100% certain and that having 10mm on the run up to AGI is better than not having 10mm on the run up to AGI.

> You right now exist on a planet with an epic amount of empty space: deserts, oceans, and a ton of 3D volume under the ocean surfaces.

All already owned and claimed by someone, backed by the force of violence.

I agree with you about space not being solution, but I don't think its as simple as you put it.

kaibee··on Chrome Users Beware: Manifest V3 Is Deceitful and Threatening (2021)
'users' is an extremely broad category. I don't think there's a one size fits all solution. There's probably some hundred million users who can, on average, make good decisions about extensions. There's also hundreds of millions of users who are children or are otherwise unable to make good decisions about extensions. Google, corporations in general, will force a 1 size fits all solution even when it doesn't, because it is cheaper/more profitable.
kaibee··on Is my toddler a stochastic parrot?
Well the undiscovered part is why it should feel like anything at all. And this is definitely relevant because consciousness clearly exists enough that we exert physical force about it, so its gotta be somewhere in physics. But where?
kaibee··on Casino-like apps have drained people of millions
Buying skins in a game is the same thing as buying fashionable/brand-name clothes. Gambling is different.
