The sea, if it teaches nothing else, does at least compel a submission to the inevitable; which resembles patience.

jpm_sd··on Ask HN: How do you organize your electronic components?
You don't have to keep everything. Decide which parts are too cheap and easily replaceable to bother with, and throw them out.

Pre made resistor and capacitor kits are a nice way to keep a selection on hand that's pre-organized for you.

Lots of people are suggesting 3D printed bins but I'd recommend something anti-static, for example:

jpm_sd··on The Remarkable Life of Ibelin
I didn't find it bleak at all. Brought tears to my eyes though.

I'm glad your condition is less severe, or better managed, than his. Keep living your best life!

jpm_sd··on Civilization VII recommends 16 cores and 32GB RAM for 4K gameplay
Yeah but look at these graphics. The term "cinematic" is overused but wow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc3_EO6Bj2M

I put hundreds of hours into the original Civilzation and Civ2 but I haven't played in years. This might actually draw me back in.

jpm_sd··on Why does man print "gimme gimme gimme" at 00:30? (2017)
I like the way you phrased this. Maybe someday academics will refer to Bullock's net the same way we talk about Occam's razor, or Maxwell's demon, today.
jpm_sd··on Manna – Two Views of Humanity's Future (2003)
(2003)

This is 20yr old and wasn't that good in the first place. Star Trek and Iain Banks did it better IMHO

jpm_sd··on Octopuses seen hunting together with fish
I can't wait for OctoPunch, the turn-based combat video game! You play as the octopus, of course, and build your party from a selection of fishy characters, each with their own personality and special hunting skills.

jpm_sd··on A lonely man in his 30s found welcome and community at spin class
I go for long solo bike rides pretty frequently, have done some group rides from time to time. I've met a few genuinely friendly people and a lot of passive-aggressive gear snobs.

jpm_sd··on Origami-Inspired Phased Arrays Are Reshaping the Future of Antennas
This is extremely academic. Reinventing flex circuits on a 3D printer??

AFAICT they built exactly one "unit cell" and there's no way that SPI interconnect scales to an array

jpm_sd··on One Laptop per Child
As has been widely publicized, this project was a total[0] failure[1]. Can anyone from the "developing world" <eyeroll emoji> comment on what has succeeded in its place? Mobile phones? Chromebooks?

Here in Massachusetts, USA we're on the One Chromebook Per Child plan. Seems to mostly work OK.

jpm_sd··on Ethernet History Deepdive – Why Do We Have Different Frame Types?
I think this is a terrible idea. Daisy chain multi drop is so last century. Switched point to point networks are so much better!

jpm_sd··on Share of total health spending, by percentile

Don't assume high spending necessarily means poor overall health. Two people in my household are on modern fancy drugs for autoimmune conditions (upadacitinib and etanercept). They work spectacularly well and cost our insurance company thousands of dollars a month. And the family members taking them are doing great!

jpm_sd··on Ask HN: What does RISC-V custom chips for under $100K mean?
I took a look at your blog[0]. You aren't going to need a custom CPU. You'll be much better off with something that's already in production, in the market, well-documented and well-tested. Also it sounds like you have a pretty steep learning curve ahead of you.

Yep, 2 months is "I've almost started"... Anyway, once people actually begin using it, the real work begins.
jpm_sd··on Sam Altman is not on YC's board. So why claim to be its chair?

jpm_sd··on Syzygy: An open standard for low cost, compact and high-performance peripherals
That's what microcontrollers are for. FPGAs are harder to program and use a lot more power. So the juice needs to be worth the squeeze!
jpm_sd··on Syzygy: An open standard for low cost, compact and high-performance peripherals
PCIe doesn't have to be over an edge connector. PMC and XMC standards use board-to-board stacking. You can also do PCIe over cabling.

What's the point of low speed single ended I/O into an FPGA module? Seems like a waste of effort.
