joe5150··on Mark: AI Bookmark for Physical Readers
Yeah, they're also going to get sued out of existence by publishers if they try this.

joe5150··on Mark: AI Bookmark for Physical Readers
I can't overstate how important it is that a real bookmark stores itself by simply tucking it somewhere else in the book while I'm reading. A titanium dongle with a battery in it can't beat that for UX....
joe5150··on Mastercard DNS error went unnoticed for years
This is increasingly not a thing. I haven't had to do this in a very long time and my primary credit cards don't even have it in the apps/website anymore.
joe5150··on The rise and fall of the English sentence (2017)
The relative clause "which is the worst form of unlucky" is embedded, among other complexities here. Obviously this doesn't make the text less readable, so I don't think nesting per se is the problem.
joe5150··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
You can double up on a lot in high school (AP, IB, dual enrollment) or CLEP out of a good number of GenEd classes, but not everybody has the access and support they need to pull that off. There's potential value in going to college (as in _being in college_) that isn't strictly measured in credit hours as well.

joe5150··on You don't have to pay the Microsoft 365 price increase
Do you mean "more appropriate for" businesses? Because 365 is definitely targeted at individuals, nation states, and everything in between.

Microsoft's home page is advertising Microsoft 365 "For 1 person" literally as I type this!

joe5150··on uBlock Origin GPL code being stolen by team behind honey browser extension
I'm curious why Amazon doesn't show you in some obvious way what affiliate code your purchase is linked to, if any. I'm imagining something like the way they used to display your Amazon Smile charity if you used that option.

Perhaps they've guessed that it would shock some people to learn how often they inadvertently use affiliate links and they would be discouraged from shopping or find some way to disable the codes.

joe5150··on Inside the university AI cheating crisis
So it either only caught a single cheater among some unknown number, or only a single student cheated? Neither case seems to justify the expense and hassle of subjecting everybody to this process, not to mention everything else wrong with TurnItIn.
joe5150··on Treating bullying as everyone's problem reduces incidence in primary schools
This is an incredibly popular opinion! Unless the "unpopular" part is that this is somehow fine or justifiable.
joe5150··on Review: The fastest of the M4 MacBook Pros might be the least interesting one
I'm on Fedora and it took essentially no time for me to apply FW's recommended battery life configs[1]. (I think on Fedora they just recommend default settings.) I don't feel the need to play around with anything at all; I get more than adequate battery life and no drain while suspended.

It's not exactly comparable to my MBP, but neither is the cost! The FW cost me about $1,100 all-in and the MBP was $2,900 (both 32GB/1TB).

joe5150··on Exploding Head Syndrome: What We Know About This Mysterious Disorder
If you have a chance to see Memoria by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, you definitely should. Tilda Swinton plays a woman with this condition.

joe5150··on The Internet Archive has lost its appeal in Hachette vs. Internet Archive
It's absurd that the most consequential part of this entire ruling is treated as a literal footnote and given no more due consideration.
joe5150··on MIT leaders describe the experience of not renewing Elsevier contract
Do you imagine the suits in Amsterdam are actually responsible for the quality of any given Elsevier journal? Most of the genuinely prestigious titles they publish were acquisitions. It is as clear an example of rent seeking as anyone can come up with.
joe5150··on The Blue Collar Jobs of Philip Glass
"Big bucks" is the last thing I'm talking about. I'm not talking about symphony subscribers and other blue hairs in a concert hall. I'm talking about an audience of creative peers.
joe5150··on The Blue Collar Jobs of Philip Glass
Okay, and supposing an artist doesn't want to be a hobo or a hermit?
joe5150··on The Blue Collar Jobs of Philip Glass
Why not indeed? If there is an orchestra's worth of musicians available and an audience there with the taste and curiosity necessary to support avant garde performing arts, anything can happen. It's easier now than ever to put a band together in your college town or even record and release music without ever leaving your bedroom, but beyond that scale you still need a critical mass of creative collaborators all in one place to pull it off.
joe5150··on The Blue Collar Jobs of Philip Glass
If Philip Glass had had to live in "rural nowhere" in order to afford to make music, we would have never heard of Philip Glass. vatys isn't asking if you can make any living this way, because of course you can. The specific conditions that allowed Philip Glass to work part time jobs and still live in the same city as people like Steve Reich and institutions like The Kitchen don't exist anymore.
joe5150··on Ask HN: Got my first iPhone. What should I know?
For me (writing in mixed English and Spanish) it's never necessary to actually change the keyboard unless I just want the ñ key available. I wrote half of this with the English keyboard and half with the Spanish keyboard and it didn't make any difference with respect to autocorrect. If I want to use Spanish text in the middle of my sentence por ejemplo así, it just works. It autocorrects "asi" to "así" without switching to the Spanish keyboard.

It could be a function of time spent writing bilingual text. If I add a new keyboard (I tried Hungarian as well) and it didn't work for that. Or it may only work with exactly two languages? It's not a documented feature as far as I know, so it's hard to say what the conditions and parameters are.

For good measure I also tried reseting my keyboard dictionary just in case what I'm describing is just the effect of intermingling my autocorrect dictionary with so much Spanish over the years that it can code switch now, but nothing changed.

joe5150··on Ask HN: Got my first iPhone. What should I know?
That's generally exactly how it works for me. I don't think I've done anything special with my configuration apart from enabling two different language keyboards.
joe5150··on Ask HN: Got my first iPhone. What should I know?
I never have to switch languages just to type a word or two in another language into the keyboard. Switching keyboards is very fast from the button on the keyboard, but switching isn't even really necessary to type in multiple Latin alphabet languages. For me it even autocorrects and spellchecks correctly with mixed English-non English text regardless of the enabled keyboard. What do better solutions look like?
joe5150··on You can opt out of airport face scans
that's good to know but disappointing to learn!
joe5150··on You can opt out of airport face scans
I agree that's a poor analogy. Nonetheless, millimeter wave scanners don't use ionizing radiation.
joe5150··on You can opt out of airport face scans
Not to suggest that you shouldn't opt out for any reason you want, but the mm wave scanner doesn't use x-rays. I don't think the x-ray scanners were ever widely deployed and none of them are in use anymore. You're exposed to so much radiation just sitting in an aircraft at 35,000 feet that anything beamed at you during security screening would have to be of very little consequence.
joe5150··on Why is it so hard to share links on LinkedIn?
I'm sure it varies a lot by type of job, but in my field it is not the first or even fifth place I would look for a new job. There's a lot of noise and postings can often be stale or in some cases are missing details, maybe because they were scraped from other job boards. If you have a large network, you may hear about upcoming jobs directly from colleagues' posts, but I think the general job search features on LinkedIn are pretty useless.

That said, I did learn some time ago that you can use various search operators (Boolean, parentheses, and quotes) which make it a little easier to actually get relevant job search results.

joe5150··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
I believe the OP was using figurative language. The point seems to be that _something_ is hampering their engineering department and they shouldn't be lobbying the government to have their software so deeply embedded into so many systems until they fix that.
joe5150··on No more boot loader: Please use the kernel instead
Not in my experience. For my typical dual boot situation where Grub is installed as the bootloader, I have to update the Grub settings like so to allow Windows updates to go smoothly:

  GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
  GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true
joe5150··on Author Clock: a novel way to tell time
Reproducing a quotation from a book is likely always fair use in the US. A database of quotes is also probably not copyrightable in the first place though of course the software is.
joe5150··on Things the guys who stole my phone have texted me to try to get me to unlock it
It seems willfully obtuse to read "understand the impulse" as "excuse the behavior" in this context.
joe5150··on No one buys books
Sure, I never said they weren't.
