joe5150··on Why DNA damage from smoking and UV rays cause cancer in some but not others
Different person here, but I've been using various Supergoop products for years and think they're all excellent. Their "Unseen Sunscreen" dries completely matte but is kind of pricey per ounce. I mostly use it on my face. "Play" is cheaper (especially if you get the 18oz pump bottle) and still a lot less greasy than most drug store sunscreens. I use it every day.
joe5150··on Show HN: How far do I have to go to run into 100k people?
Anywhere that far north seems to be skewed by lack of data from Canada. For example, I clicked NE of Seattle (on Bothell specifically) and got a 1200 mi ray that passes right through Winnipeg (pop. 700,000).

Orchid's off-putting launch video: https://x.com/orchid_hq/status/2082149144710336976

It's strange to me to position your product as enabling its users to care less about people and be more alienated from their loved ones.

OP acknowledges this was "made to get attention": https://x.com/Lucknite/status/2082551101308735864

joe5150··on Show HN: How far do I have to go to run into 100k people?
I'm having a hard time finding any place that produces a ray longer than about 900 miles. I found a spot in NW South Dakota whose shortest rays are nearly 300 miles.
joe5150··on Jelly UI: Soft-body physics for native HTML form controls
Some of the "slides" have more content than fits vertically in the viewport, and trying to scroll to the bottom to see it without getting bounced to the next slide or back to the top is very touchy and tedious.
joe5150··on Reimagining the mouse pointer for the AI era
Talking to your computer can only ever work for people in atomized work-from-home silos, surely. I can't really imagine living in a world where everybody is just muttering commands to the computer all the time.
joe5150··on Googlebook
You can value not pumping out disposable garbage even if the (current) economic regime appears to encourage and reward it.
joe5150··on Judge blocks Pentagon effort to 'punish' Anthropic with supply chain risk label
They actually don't need to sanction Anthropic as a "supply risk" in order to not contract with them, and doing so is obviously an insane overreach.
joe5150··on Judge blocks Pentagon effort to 'punish' Anthropic with supply chain risk label
The military can work with someone else's product or use a bit of their trillion-dollar budget to come up with their own.
joe5150··on My astrophotography in the movie Project Hail Mary
This is pure sophistry. Your complaints about the movie's tone and dialogue are strictly and specifically problems of your own taste, not filmmaking quality. The movie is (objectively!) well made with respect to "craft, skill, storytelling structure and emotional impact".
joe5150··on My Astrophotography in the Movie Project Hail Mary
A movie which doesn't satisfy your specific tastes and expectations in science fiction hasn't "failed".
joe5150··on Framework Computer Now Sponsoring LVFS / Fwupd Development
I don't think this drivel helps explains anything that's not stated in very plain English in DHH's blog.
joe5150··on CBP is monitoring US drivers and detaining those with suspicious travel patterns
Flock has a series of bizarre, obviously LLM-generated blog posts trying to convince the public that they are working "toward a future where compliance and community trust walk hand in hand"....

joe5150··on Two billion email addresses were exposed
It's honestly very hard to even care at that scale.
joe5150··on Firefox profiles: Private, focused spaces for all the ways you browse
Does the Containerise extension do what you want? I've used it in the past for wildcard subdomains but not for ports.

joe5150··on Getting syntax highlighting wrong
I don't get this either. My code doesn't have "base text"...everything is something! I can see that not being the case for something like HTML, but not for most programming languages.
joe5150··on Lina Khan points to Figma IPO as vindication of M&A scrutiny
More like the 80s but true. Also maybe worth remembering that Thiel was outed by Gawker. He didn't come out as gay of his own volition and perhaps never would have.
joe5150··on The new skill in AI is not prompting, it's context engineering
It helps that the rebrand may lead some people to believe that there are actually new and better inputs into the system rather than just more elaborate sandcastles built in someone else's sandbox.
joe5150··on The new skill in AI is not prompting, it's context engineering
Surely Jim is also using an agent. Jim can't be worth having a quick sync with if he's not using his own agent! So then why are these two agents emailing each other back and forth using bizarre, terse office jargon?
joe5150··on The new skill in AI is not prompting, it's context engineering
Jim's agent replies, "Thursday AM touchbase sounds good, let's circle back after." Both agents meet for a blue sky strategy session while Jim's body floats serenely in a nutrient slurry.
joe5150··on The new skill in AI is not prompting, it's context engineering
You might as well use your natural intelligence instead of the artificial stuff at that point.
joe5150··on How University Students Use Claude
Being able to do basic math in your head is valuable just in terms of basic practicality (quickly calculating a tip or splitting a bill, doubling a recipe, reasoning about a budget...), but this is a poor analogy anyway because 3x2 is still 3x2 regardless of how you get there whereas creative work produced by software is worthless.
joe5150··on How University Students Use Claude
> Google Search made intuition and deep understanding and encyclopedic knowledge MORE important, not less.

Not to mention discernment and info literacy when you do need to go to the web to search for things. AI content slop has put everybody who built these skills on the back foot again, of course.

joe5150··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
Resentful of what? Directed at whom? There are lots of options that cost less and many are shorter than four years.
joe5150··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
What does "gorging themselves on endowments" even mean? If they did that, they wouldn't be very endowed in quick order.
joe5150··on I maintain a 17 year old ThinkPad
Agreed particularly with respect to the top cover (though it has improved).
joe5150··on Search could be so much better. And I don't mean chatbots with web access
I think google several years ago had gotten very good at matching on related concepts, but it just fell off a cliff after that.
joe5150··on Mark: AI Bookmark for Physical Readers
I'm not familiar with Readwise but it appears they only store highlights? Publishers probably don't like that but don't care enough to do anything about it, whereas "uploading copies of books to the services to do AI stuff with them" is the subject of many ongoing lawsuits right now, so they'll be very interested if this takes off.
