infradig··on Isaac Asimov: The Last Question (1956)
No 1950s sci-fi story about super-advanced computers is complete without endless clicking relays and flashing bezels.
infradig··on Cosmic Paradox Reveals the Awful Consequence of an Observer-Free Universe
Sounds like a cosmic egg waiting to hatch.
infradig··on Eliminating contrails from flying could be cheap
Less than 1% globally, so you're right.
infradig··on BBC: UFO hit by hellfire, no impact on vehicle & flying away
Ah yes, the great cause celebre of our time. How dare anyone think of anything else.
infradig··on The Universe Within 12.5 Light Years
How is two objects not touching but feeling a force crazy? Isn't that what gravity does but everyone's ok with that
infradig··on Intelligent Agent Technology: Open Sesame! (1993)
In 1989 I wrote a little shell with an embedded neural net that watched what you did and after a while prompted you for a likely next command. Just a toy really but it worked. I used to be into such things back then.
infradig··on Depictions of the Milky Way found in ancient Egyptian imagery
The milky way and zodiac from the Bible 2000 years ago... Revelations 22: Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month.
infradig··on Francis Crick's "Central Dogma" was misunderstood
The proteins don't directly change the DNA via information transfer, that's not how natural selection works.
infradig··on Australian Parliament bans social media for under-16s
Australia was founded in 1901 as a federation of free states.
infradig··on Plants find light using gaps between their cells
So Leonard Cohen was right... “There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in”.
infradig··on Use Prolog to improve LLM's reasoning
It's not meant to be taken literally, it refers to any language of logic programming”. Apologies to Monty Python.
infradig··on The Great Vic Gravel Route: Crossing Victoria on Unsealed Roads (2022)
I'm in Australia and have driven on many gravel roads. It always means those small grey/gray stones that are spread on the road after grading, but not sealed. The article really does seem to be calling dirt roads gravel for some reason. I'm confused as a gravel road has a very specific meaning to me.
infradig··on Big Macs and the Cost of Living Crisis
The ABC loves this style, for some years now. I haven't encountered it elsewhere and I loathe it.
infradig··on The Stratocaster Turns 70
Why did so many great guitarists who made their mark using other guitars then settle into boring middle-aged mediocrity playing a Stratocaster? Never understood.
infradig··on Giving Life to Æthelstan
I so look forward to our monthly Anglo Saxon Kings and Queens of England article.
infradig··on A Few Notes on the Culture by Iain M Banks (1994)
State of the Art & Player of Games are the only two I actually enjoyed. The others I plodded through begrudgingly.
infradig··on The British elite is haunted by childhood demons
I recommend watching "If..." (1968) with Malcolm McDowell.
infradig··on I Accidentally Uncovered a Nationwide Scam Run by Fake Hosts on Airbnb (2019)
2019
infradig··on New theory on Satoshi Nakamoto
Not PhD students. Anything else.
infradig··on Brain waves appear to wash out waste during sleep in mice
I'd be careful with Prazosin. Awful few weeks of violent and suicidal thoughts before it mellowed out into an emotionally zombified plateau, then I quit it. Cured my PTSD though.
infradig··on New breakthrough brings matrix multiplication closer to ideal
I know nothing but read the article. These improvements are about analytic solutions and have no practical use. At least that's what it said.
infradig··on Zoomable, translated version of the 15th century Mappa Mundi
Wrong map.
infradig··on "Dune" and the delicate art of making fictional languages
I suppose you meant Old English. As a lay reader I managed to struggle through most of Chaucer's (Middle English) work and enjoyed it.
infradig··on You almost never see a clock at the mall
Welcome to the Gruen transfer.
infradig··on A parliament of owls and a murder of crows: How groups of birds got their names
A parliament of owls seems a confusion with Chaucers's Parlement of Foules (which derives from Persian poetry). Anyway as the article states it's a stare of owls.
infradig··on I used to not worry about climate change. Now I do [video]
Well that only makes it even more relevant.
infradig··on Ossian, the ‘Homer of the North’, the greatest literary hoax (2016)
They didn't compare Ossian to Homer. Read it again. They compared Ossian to Irish legends and then compared The Odyssey to The Illiad. Ossian was suspiciously close to the Irish where Odyssey and Iliad were quite different.
infradig··on The Dark Forest hypothesis is absurd
I always considered it a political metaphor really.
infradig··on Show HN: I made a tool to compare time zones
Sweet, I did a CLI version of this idea in 1987 for VMS, was working with people in Sydney, London & Chicago and this made it easy to communicate.
infradig··on Coastline paradox
The Wikipedia article states it's not really fractal.
