hanley··on Show HN: Betatype - A freelance site where clients pay $3,500 for prototypes
Typo under 'Both sides get what they really want'.

> Programmers get get paid to implement a well-defined spec.

hanley··on Software of the Apollo guidance computer was hand-woven into rope core memory
> Some programmers nicknamed the finished product LOL memory, for Little Old Lady memory.

The original usage of the term LOL.

hanley··on Comcast response to Netflix
Looks like Comcast left their comment section open too, although you have to scroll past the 2 large paragraphs of legal matters to get to the comments.

I thought it was interesting that they have more legal content than actual content on the post.

hanley··on 100 Supercharger Stations
Tesla recently completed a cross country road trip using the Supercharger stations. They put up a bunch of blog posts and videos about it.

hanley··on A New Codecademy
It would be helpful if the blog post would say that explicitly. Or maybe I just missed it? I spent a while on the website trying to figure out how to access the new content because I felt the blog post implied the content was up already.
hanley··on A New Codecademy
Regarding your first bit of feedback, there is a Javascript track which focuses on the language itself and then there is a JQuery track which teaches DOM manipulation, events, animation.

hanley··on Mellow, the robotic sous-chef
I clicked the link imaging a moving robot that chopped/prepped food. It was the sous-chef part that made me think that. I don't think I would have interpreted robotic sous-vide cooker the same way. That being said, I definitely think 'smart sous-vide cooker' is a better description and more useful tag-line.
hanley··on Pied Piper
I've seen other networks do it for shows in the past. Most notably http://www.bettercallsaul.com/ was created a while ago in reference to Breaking Bad.

Edit: and http://www.savewalterwhite.com/

hanley··on Ask HN: Ex-Intuit Engineer Building Free Income Tax Software. Join as cofounder?
Maybe I missed the answer to this, but how are you doing this for free? Obviously your business needs to make money somehow.

As others have said you should definitely put a sign-up form on your site.

hanley··on Ask HN: Your favorite YouTube channels?
For Python people, http://pyvideo.org/ aggregates videos from conferences and meetups.
hanley··on Why can’t America get the sidewalk café right?
I've noticed more beer gardens popping up in the US along with the growth in microbreweries.
hanley··on U.S. Agent Lures Romanian Hackers in Subway Data Heist
I like the photo of the Secret Service Agents using Google Maps.
hanley··on Facebook launches Nearby Friends
I can imagine sitting at a bar with friends and getting notifications on my phone that they are nearby.
hanley··on Ask HN: If you worked with a grad from a code bootcamp, how effective were they?
This is spot on in my experience. I'm a recent grad with a BS in Computer Science and know several people who have graduated from different bootcamps. In comparing the kids I graduated college with to the ones who just did a bootcamp I see exactly what you described.
hanley··on Orders projected to begin shipping 4/21
I don't think they actually are that similar.

Ensure doesn't even get you close to the recommended amount of macronutrients, unless you're trying to lose weight. Ensure has 210-350 calories [0], yet high levels of micronutrients which means if you drink too many of them you risk taking in way too much of some vitamins and minerals.

Soylent is meant for healthy people who want to consume a normal amount of macro and micro nutrients each day.

hanley··on My low-paying, early-morning, exertion-requiring job
I could be mistaken, but I mapped the route and it looked like his job entails biking 1.6 miles. Big whoop.
hanley··on HHVM 3.0.0
Same with Eminem. He and Dre are obsessive in their work. "In 2006, Snoop Dogg told the website Dubcnn.com that Dr. Dre had made new artist Bishop Lamont re-record a single bar of vocals 107 times." [1]

hanley··on Google to reportedly kill Voice, integrate it into Hangouts
This is all that I use Google Voice for. I love having a transcribed voicemail emailed to me, for free. Are there any other options out there? I've noticed lately that the Google Voice app sucks - the UI is unintuitive and is painfully slow to refresh my messages. I'd be happy to switch if there is an alternative.
hanley··on Android coming to wearables
In what ways has it changed your life?
hanley··on Android coming to wearables
I really like the idea of being able to check the time (don't currently wear a watch) and text messages without having to pull out my phone. Not sure if that's worth $100+ though..
hanley··on Show HN: March Madness for Hackers
Any idea if you'll have this functionality up before the bracket deadline ends? I'd love to be able to build out some functions and test them on previous years before the contest officially starts.
hanley··on Why I use non-American English voices in my text to speech
Maybe it's because you're forgetting the last digit?
hanley··on Overstock.com Is Now Accepting Bitcoins
No one will be sending Bitcoins to Overstock.com. All of the Bitcoin payments will be processed through Coinbase.
hanley··on Best Android Smartphones Of 2013
Did you read the article? Moto G was listed as #3 in their ranking.
hanley··on Lessons learned from my failed startup after 2 years, 300 users and 0 revenue
I think you missed the reference. They were referring to a company from the TV show Parks & Recreation. See here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jX0ZF8f8G0A
hanley··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2013?
> You know that eating bananas is as bad for health than staying on a chair all day long, right? For example eating an enormous amount of bananas at once is extremely stressful on the body and my friends who do it all admit they are sick for one month afterwards.

Your friends are likely not fully prepared for the marathon. Saying something and then trying to prove it true with a hear-say based example of an extreme case is ridiculous. Please don't post comments like this on HN.

hanley··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2013?
For more running related books you should check out "Once a Runner" by John L. Parker Jr. [1], and "Eat and Run" by Scott Jurek [2].

hanley··on Fury at Facebook as login requests “Government ID”
Wow, the way that they display the Twitter quotes in the article is hideous! The icons are huge and distracting, and on top of that they don't seem to understand the basic idea that all close quotes need to match up with an open quote.

'Open Quote Icon'

'Close Quote Icon'

'Another Close Quote Icon'

hanley··on Show HN: Gmelius – No Ads and Better User Interface for Gmail
Also, a lot of the wording in the feature paragraphs is strange. I'm not sure if English is your second language or if you're just trying too hard to explain things. If it's the latter, just keep it simple. For example - "In Gmail, labels are placed at the very left of emails subjects. This has for main consequence to decrease the visibility of the content of your emails." The second sentence there reads like an output from Google Translate.
hanley··on Show HN: Simple analytics for restaurants. Feedback on launch page?
Your first paragraph makes an excellent point. No one is going to type all that in each day. And more importantly - you'd have to type in every ingredient and the quantity for each menu item in order to get the 'better inventory control' that the website suggests.
