hanley··on TinyPod – Apple Watch case with scroll wheel
I'm hoping that Apple releases a new mini on a 3 year cadence. Maybe there wasn't enough demand to continue the line every year, but they'll bring it back occasionally?
hanley··on Building GitHub with Ruby on Rails
You don't have to use `let` in specs. I prefer setting instance variables inside a `before :each` block.
hanley··on How IKEA tricks you into buying more stuff
100% this. We have an L-shaped sofa from them that has lasted through 4 different apartments. One side of the L is longer, and we can easily change the orientation to fit the aspect of the apartment living room.
hanley··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
I think you meant he's a TV personality and his show is great for entertainment.
hanley··on How Satya Nadella turned Microsoft around
The Windows phone was loved because it had excellent Nokia hardware. The software was not loved and the app store was lacking.
hanley··on Ask HN: What are some available force multipliers that most people don't know?
Alternately, I found Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg to be more actionable and was able to stick a number of new habits using the recommendations from the book.
hanley··on Was corporate profit growth a bubble inflated by "financial engineering"?
> each citizen gets $1200 they're then taxed on

The $1200 that people are getting is tax-free.

hanley··on Clear Your Terminal in Style
I use profile triggers to change the color scheme of the shell when I SSH to a production server. The color I chose is different from my regular scheme so that it reminds me I am in production and things can break if I'm not careful.
hanley··on How to Design Mobile Apps for One-Hand Usage
Good point. As a single data point from a left-handed person: I primarily use my phone with my right hand.
hanley··on Apple Pay on pace to account for 10% of global card transactions
As someone who uses Stripe for a SaaS product, this is an amazing feature. It means not having to email/call the client just because they got a new card, and instead billing keeps going as if nothing changed.
hanley··on The Effect of Cold Showering on Health and Work (2016)
Not OP, but I finish every shower with 2-3 minutes of as cold as the faucet will go. I've been doing this every day for about a year. In the winter my water temp is in the mid-40 degrees F. I love this habit. It's always difficult, but I always feel great after doing it.
hanley··on Anonymous shell companies buying American real estate
I can't imagine anyone actually wanting to live in the Seaport, and certainly not for the price that those new units are being rented/sold for.
hanley··on What Happens to the Body on No Sleep
> Add focused breathing.

5 minutes of box breathing (4 seconds inhale, 4 hold, 4 exhale, 4 hold) has been very helpful at calming my mind and feeling more ready to fall asleep.

hanley··on People love working remotely
Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker is pushing a tax credit for employers who allow employees to work remotely as a strategy for reducing transportation congestion. I'm not sure I agree with the technique but it is an interesting idea to create financial incentives that encourage remote work.

hanley··on Niki Lauda has died
Since you liked Rush, you should check out the documentary Senna about the great F1 racer Ayrton Senna (widely considered the best F1 driver ever).
hanley··on Denver decriminalizes psychedelic mushrooms
How do you go about finding a trained guide? This is the part that has always confused me. In Michael Pollan's interviews on the subject he basically says he was lucky to have money and connections, and otherwise avoids answering that topic.
hanley··on Notion – All-in-one workspace for notes, tasks, wikis, and databases
Does anyone use this with their spouse / significant other? Seems like a great tool to have shared docs, lists, todos, etc. I'm thinking things like house and car maintenance, financial planning, shopping lists, and all the other things that I normally keep in a combination of Google Docs and Apple Notes.
hanley··on Colin O’Brady Completes Crossing of Antarctica with Final 32-Hour Push
> Then I saw how smooth the terrain was at least where the photo was taken.

If you look through Colin's earlier instagram posts [1] you'll see that the terrain was not smooth for much of his journey. The terrain is covered in sastrugi [2] and this year was marked with unexpected higher temperatures and snowfall which made the skiing very slow for Colin and all the other explorers out there. Explorers Web has a good collection of blog posts about the various expeditions that are happening this season [3].

hanley··on Colin O’Brady Completes Crossing of Antarctica with Final 32-Hour Push
It was actually much harder this year due to unexpected higher temperatures for this time of year, more snowfall, and whiteout conditions which all led to slower skiing. Many explorers failed to accomplish their goals this year due to poor conditions.

hanley··on Ask HN: Starting a career in security at 40?
Look for a local group such as Security BSides - go to the meetups, get to know other professionals, learn from them, and get involved with their events.
hanley··on U.S. Secret Service Warns ID Thieves Are Abusing USPS’s Mail Scanning Service
This is correct in my experience. The letter says you have to confirm with the code, but either without doing that you keep getting the emails with scanned images.
hanley··on My somewhat complete salary history as a software engineer
Do you mind sharing where in the North East? I dream of moving out of Boston but I don't see nearly as many jobs in the other New England towns / small cities.
hanley··on Octobox helps manage GitHub notifications
I'm confused about pricing. The main page doesn't mention any limitations, but I stumbled across https://octobox.io/pricing which implies $100/month for use with private repos.
hanley··on Ask HN: What was the best decision you made in your career?
How do they handle company benefits like 401k, health care, etc when you reduce your hours down from "full-time"?
hanley··on Sleep Scientist Warns Against Walking Through Life 'In an Underslept State'
The Sleep With Me podcast has been incredibly helpful for falling asleep during times when I'm stressed or otherwise can't sleep. It's the right amount of goofy and rambling that just lulls me to sleep.

hanley··on Is vitamin D really a cure-all, and how should we get our fix?
I've had success taking a combination of vitamins D3 and K2 in liquid dropper form. I noticed the benefits more than when I was just taking capsules of D3.

Interestingly, I've managed to avoid getting a seasonal cold this year unlike most of my coworkers and friends, and my guess is that the D3/K2 has helped with that because I haven't changed much else.

hanley··on Introducing the new SourceForge
Looks like a good list of features, except for the HTML5 Speedtest. Why was that needed?
hanley··on Parcel – A fast, zero configuration web application bundler
+1 for Vue support
hanley··on Vision Insurance Is Making Glasses More Expensive
I had a similar experience with Warby. Two attempts to get the prescription right, both sets of lenses were wrong. I don't have a strong prescription, nothing complicated.
hanley··on Numpy: Plan for dropping Python 2.7 support
Django has not dropped Python2 yet. Django 2.0 will drop Python2 but that has not yet been released, and Django 1.11 (with Python2) support will be supported in LTS for several years.
