hanley··on Top Ten Time Series DBs
Have you used it? I've been looking at this for a couple months and am waiting for Amazon RDS support. Curious to hear about people's experiences with this.
hanley··on Node v8.8.0
Is version 8 still planned to enter active LTS on 10/31? Or does this release mark the beginning of LTS?
hanley··on How We Bootstrapped Our SaaS Startup to Ramen Profitability
This drives me nuts. I don't understand why it's so commonly missed.
hanley··on Dear Amazon, We Picked Your New Headquarters for You
People in the Boulder area approved a sales tax increase to start paying for this back in 2004. At that time it was sold as something that would be built in 10 years, that estimation later changed. Part of the problem is that the plan is to follow an existing railroad right-of-way, so they are financially at the mercy of the company who owns the existing rail system.
hanley··on Ask HN: What audio resources can improve my technical skills during my commute?
I made this mistake and I'm 1/4 of the way into the book. Can't tell yet how big of a mistake it was.
hanley··on Vue.js vs. React
I'm not very familiar with React, but Vue does have lifecycle hooks that work well: https://vuejs.org/v2/guide/instance.html#Instance-Lifecycle-...
hanley··on Alex Honnold Scales El Capitan Without Ropes, and the Climbing World Reels
You are correct about the difference between freeclimbing and free soloing. Honnold had nothing to save him if he fell. Caldwell and Jorgeson had a rope and gear and a belayer to catch them if they fell, but they climbed their whole route without pulling on gear to help them climb.

They climbed different routes. The Dawn Wall route had not previously been free climbed, it had only been aid climbed before (meaning climbers pulled on gear to help get through the most difficult sections). Honnold climbed a route called Freerider which is easier than the Dawn Wall but still very very very difficult.

hanley··on The first woman to finish the Boston Marathon in 1967 has run it again at age 70
I'm confused about the single day release. Will it also be available afterward for streaming?
hanley··on Ask HN: Mailing lists that HN readers ought to know about?

hanley··on Opinionated Comparison of React, Angular2, and Aurelia
As a Vue beginner, I had the best luck asking questions on https://gitter.im/vuejs/vue and often got responses in minutes.
hanley··on Chrome/macOS users in The Netherlands cannot visit google.com or google.nl
This is happening for me in the US East Coast and disabling QUIC fixed the issue.
hanley··on GitHub changes topbar to dark theme
It looks like they are adding options to choose from different styles. I don't see the link yet in my account settings but this screenshot makes me think it's coming to everyone. https://twitter.com/jublonet/status/830131346798424064
hanley··on Node v7.5.0 Released
There is an overlap. Both V4 and V6 are currently LTS until April.
hanley··on Final – A credit card built for the 21st century
Stripe handles this nicely. [1] As a merchant, it's handy. As a consumer, it's a bit spooky.

hanley··on Dark Patterns are designed to confuse and enroll
The Green Chef cancellation isn't easy either. You have to email them and request a cancellation link.

FWIW, I got terrible food poisoning from one of Green Chef's meals. Always make sure the food is still cold when you receive it, I thought it was "cold enough" but I was wrong.

hanley··on Google Fonts Redesigned
I regularly have to email SaaS companies and tell them the service I just signed up doesn't work correctly in Firefox.
hanley··on How an Ad Campaign Made Lesbians Fall in Love with Subaru
Not all AWD is the same, some manufacturers have better AWD systems than others.
hanley··on Amazon Reviews: How We Spot the Fakes
He recently fried a Chromebook with one of those bad cables. Can't find the source right now but it was posted here on Hacker News.
hanley··on Turning a climbing wall into a video game
Sounds like it isn't going to be open sourced. Someone else made a clone and put it on github, see here https://www.reddit.com/r/climbing/comments/3p2soa/bouldering...
hanley··on Meteor Galaxy, a cloud platform for Meteor applications
Bummer here as well. And thanks for the tip about not including a database. I'm surprised they didn't mention that in the article! Seems misleading. Since the original free deploy does include the database and they didn't mention it not being included in the article I simply assumed it was included in Galaxy.
hanley··on Dropbox has open-sourced Zulip
HipChat supports XMPP [0], and you can host it yourself.

Not sure about the guy that "doesn't do chat", he might be out of luck. Time to adapt.

hanley··on Rent-Stabilized Housing Is Disappearing Fast in NYC
> After hearing through a FOIL request that it would cost the city $50,000 to deliver the building-by-building data (which implies that the city itself does have the data readily available), John, and some peers at BetaNYC, went about scraping the tax bills for NYC buildings to get the rent stabilization information out of PDFs.

> In this new era of open data, you should not need to know how to write a PDF scraper to find a reasonably priced place to live, or discover where you are about to lose one.

I'm having a hard time imagining how it would cost $50,000 to export data.

hanley··on Snoop Dogg for CEO of Twitter
> And he works well with others, teaming up with Katy Perry to sell one of the best tracks of all time, “California Gurls.”

Interesting song choice considering all of the songs he has worked on with other artists. And saying one of the best tracks of all time is probably a stretch there. This author just sounds like he has a crush on Snoop.

hanley··on Depression's Upside (2010)
Check out https://www.headspace.com/ They have guided meditation that I really like. At least give the 10 free days a shot and see what you think, nothing to lose!
hanley··on Spotify raises $526M at a $8.5B valuation
I've built a large list of artists that I follow in Spotify (so that I get notifications when they release new music), and an even larger list of albums saved to my library so that I can easily browse through music that I like. It seems like it would be a bit of a pain to switch to another provider, but I imagine it would still only take me an hour or two to setup all my follows and saves in another app.

I'm eager to try out Apple Music once it comes to Android.

hanley··on Meteor Raises $20M
At the moment Meteor only has free development hosting, they haven't launched their production hosting yet so the pricing hasn't been announced either.
hanley··on Why I’m breaking up with Google Chrome
The 'c' key is not intuitive at all. If anything, it should be the Escape key.

I instinctively tried to scroll down past the ad, then noticed the article was bobbing on the right. I left without reading it. I shouldn't have to do a special action just to get to your content. Scrolling is intuitive, moving the mouse to the right side of the screen and waiting for an animation to move the content into view is not intuitive or user-friendly. I'm sure your advertisers love this though. I'd never heard of your site before today, you just lost a potential new reader because of this style of advertising.

hanley··on Hacker News Frontpage with a 150 point threshold
After using hckr news for so long I can't go back to the regular HN page. I find the styling and filtering to be much more effective for consuming HN's content.
hanley··on Unfunny April Fool's Joke from the Magic Lantern Developers
It's interesting that the author mentions only one of the the error codes (0x000000aa) but not 0xdeadbeef, which was an obvious giveaway to me that this isn't a real error.
hanley··on Apple WWDC 2015
> everyone sat/stood in long lines using various devices and no one talked anymore

This is my experience with most conferences now unfortunately. Even when I try to talk to people who are waiting in line they will talk a little and then go right back into their phones.
