I love this, and my lottery dream consists of funding a scalable, interactive, tag-based version that allows layering of different topics. As a schoolteacher, the woolly mammoths/pyramids moments are great for my 12/13 year old students. Revolutions, wars, social movements, the arts, sports, science, etc could all be toggled, with links to Wikipedia or potentially other sources for each entry. Potentially crowd-sourced with moderation. I also dream of having a classroom tool version that students could build.

Yep, I couldn't even finish this flag-waving trash. I'm curious to see how others on HN read it. In various corners of the internet I'm getting familiar vibes of post-911 rally-round-the-flag sentiments. Except that as you say, it's not as explicit. Rather than PMCs simply there to enable a thin veil of plausible deniability for the government, the strategy is one more layer removed from outright national interest and more values based. Having said all that, this article is a sharp turn back to bald-faced American exceptionalism.

It's not a speech on how "humans are terrible". He's putting things into perspective, echoing similar thoughts to some of the astronauts that have seen Earth from above - that we need to work together to preserve our fragile (in terms of human survival) planet. The view of the astronauts is similar to the view of Sagan - a sudden realisation of how small we are. Not because some rocks and space are bigger, but because we're so similar and so close to each other in the vastness of space.

You're ragging on it being emotive as if that's a bad thing, completely and utterly missing the point of what he is saying.

Edit: it's not so much that you're missing the point of what he is saying, but I think you're severely underestimating the power of emotion in argument. I see it constantly on tech-oriented discussion sites.

I know loads of older people without kids. Would their lives have had more meaning and fulfillment if they had them? Maybe, probably. But they are happy and content, living lives of meaning. As for your hobbies comment...seriously?

I use the same group of apps plus the calendar. What do you use for that? I'm finding it great with a couple of niggles. Not opposed to jumping, even there's some friction.

Exposure (excuse the pun) is incredibly difficult for photographers. A platform like instagram removes a barrier (a self-run website).

The popularity of instagram helps with the number of eyeballs.

I'll admit I was baiting you a bit there - I apologise. I was running out the door and didn't want to forget.

The thing about "what has happened" is that it actually leaves a lot of room for bad faith reporting. You can never include everything. What isn't reported is just as important as what is, whether it's whole stories, certain viewpoints, context, anything.

What criticisms did mainstream news outlets level at George W. Bush that you felt were attacks? At what point in the lead-up to lies-based invasion do you feel it's ok to say "Bush and Cheney just might be lying here, folks."?

Perhaps "creation" was too strong a word. So no, it wasn't so much being imposed as it was a natural (albeit unfortunate) consequence of technology, which you point out, and post-war sentiment, which you also point out! I agree with you, I'm just saying it wasn't a good thing. When there's so few voices, there's only so much they can say.

I'm not sure what you mean in your penultimate paragraph. "identities and divisions eroding" is only partly true, surely. You could certainly argue the opposite is true - see the women's lib and civil rights movements for examples of people fighting back against conformity.
