foodstances··on Names of Canada truck convoy donors leaked after reported hack
Because they were not one of those inconvenienced by the protests.
foodstances··on How Much Are You Willing to Pay for a Burrito?
“I had been getting my usual, a steak burrito, which had been maybe in the mid-$8 range,” said Mr. Marsh, who trades stock options at his home in Hinsdale, Ill. “Now it was more than $9.”

He walked out.

I guess times must be tough for those stock traders if they can't spare a dollar.

foodstances··on Computers as I used to love them
Startup idea: provide cloud backup service through Syncthing. End users install Syncthing and then add a remote host provided by your company that is bound to their account. That instance just keeps a copy of everything it receives on some cloud infrastructure. Slap a web interface and some modest data retention on it to recover files.
foodstances··on Show HN: A tool to send push notifications to your phone, written in Go
You could use Pushover for that, it works on iOS and Android - https://pushover.net

You can also send images captured from your camera in addition to just text notifications.

foodstances··on Tips on adding JSON output to your CLI app
libxo is integrated into FreeBSD and many of its core utilities, so structured output is supported out of the box there.

Of course not, it's reading the entire program from a floppy disk
foodstances··on BMW removing touchscreen from a bunch of models due to chip shortage
Does your Mazda not have the physical volume knob in the center console near the cupholder? The touchscreen and steering wheel controls are useless until ~30 seconds after starting the car, but the physical volume knob always works (at in the CX-5).

foodstances··on I built a $5k Raspberry Pi server (yes, it's ridiculous)
But why is view count the only metric you care about? How about getting fewer views but more engagement, with viewers that want to see the content but are turned off by the stupid thumbnails?
foodstances··on OpenBSD 7.0
They all feel different, I would encourage you to install each in a VM and play around and see which one you like the best.

foodstances··on Framework Laptop pre-orders are open, starting at $999
What was the point of signing up for pre-order emails and following your launch if it was going to be announced everywhere at the same time? Your website is down and it was impossible to complete a pre-order checkout because of all the errors.
foodstances··on Preparing for Pre-Orders! (Framework modular laptop)
Your ThinkPad from 10 years ago or a modern ThinkPad that has soldered on RAM and WiFi chip and an ever-decreasing profile that makes it harder to replace individual components?
foodstances··on Stamping the joy out of collectors
I've been involved in many car clubs and have never seen anyone think someone is "weird" for not knowing those things, they just assume the person isn't that interested in caring about those technical details (akin to being at a tech conference and there being programmers vs. users of a platform). As long as you have an interest in the cars and are sociable, other people are generally happy that you're there.
foodstances··on Zero click vulnerability in Apple’s macOS Mail
What's to stop someone from selling a vuln to Zerodium and then just reporting it to Apple shortly after? You get paid and Apple gets to fix it.
foodstances··on Show HN: A Chrome extension to see notifications for comments on your HN threads
It had notifications when YC was funding Notifo, but they went out of business.
foodstances··on Would Rust Secure Curl?
You know what would definitively prove whether it would? Just do it!

I'm so tired of these "rewrite in rust" articles that have no code behind them. Spend the time and write a replacement for curl, ship it, and people will start using it instead of curl. In some years time, you can write a paper showing how many vulns your replacement had vs. rust. curl continues to be written in C because it has someone actually doing the work to write and update it. A theoretical rust replacement does not exist because no one is doing the hard work of writing and maintaining it.

It's like LibreSSL vs OpenSSL. Did LibreSSL end up being more secure? At least we can find out instead of just guessing about whether removing crappy code from OpenSSL would be a good idea.

foodstances··on Pg-shortkey: YouTube-Like Short IDs as Postgres Primary Keys
Something to be considered when assigning random-letter IDs to public things: the random combination of letters can include offensive words in them. You should keep a ban list of words in your application and check your assigned ID against the list each time you get an ID.
foodstances··on IRL Glasses Block All the Screens Around You
I had that happen with my polarized sunglasses at a restaurant that had their menus displayed on big vertically-rotated screens behind the counters. I kept looking around for paper menus and didn't realize there was even anything displaying on the screens until I took my glasses off.
