foodstances··on VMware Fusion 13 – native support for Apple Silicon Macs
qemu, but it will be slow because the kernel/processor can't do the heavy lifting.

foodstances··on IRC Server as Tor Hidden Service on OpenBSD
That is mostly solved with ChanServ and NickServ services. Channels can't be taken over with DDoSes because ChanServ protects them and attackers can't get your real IP because NickServ provides host masking.

foodstances··on Show HN: MyNotifier – Simple Notifications
Meaning your app has its own background service that has to be running with a constant connection to receive notifications from your own servers? How are you doing that on iOS?
foodstances··on Tell HN: Amazon shopping is racing to the bottom of quality
Perhaps a product idea is to make a front-end to Amazon that is able to better filter the results, to bring forward slightly higher priced items that are higher quality, and do a better job of filtering out spam than Amazon (something that filters out those six-letter all-capital-letter Chinese company names).

Income would be generated by making all of the links to the actual products Amazon affiliate links, but just make the frontend look exactly like Amazon's search with better results.

foodstances··on Rights Amplification in Master-Keyed Mechanical Locks (2003) [pdf]
Every time I see an F1 race and see all of the crypto.com ads, I can't help but picture Matt Blaze spending millions of dollars to advertise his blog.
foodstances··on Take more screenshots
It's part of ImageMagick.
foodstances··on Show HN: Whatcha – social network for digital media
Installed it from the App Store, went through the signup process, saw that it requires a phone number, tried to register without one, couldn't, and then uninstalled it, all in about 30 seconds.

I cannot even guess why a social network about movies and TV shows requires my phone number, but you surely aren't getting it.

foodstances··on FCC Closes Robocall Loophole
What's the use case for purchasing a new landline in 2022?
foodstances··on A religious sect landed Google in a lawsuit
It feels like they have no actual direction but they think if they just hire enough smart people (and prevent those smart people from working at competitors) they'll figure something out along the way. It's why they have a near constant stream of product/service failures (https://killedbygoogle.com/).
foodstances··on Challenge: Pixel perfect design
On some MacBooks, the default screen resolution is not a perfect 2x, but something like 1.75x. This means macOS is drawing its framebuffer in 2x, then scaling it down to 1.75x to fit the actual screen resolution which blurs things.

The new MacBook Pro for example uses perfect 2x scaling, but the MacBook Air has a smaller resolution screen and is not 2x.

foodstances··on Even more pi in the sky: Calculating 100T digits of pi on Google Cloud
Reading that, it's hard not to see the parallels to Darren Aronofsky's movie Pi. Building a supercomputer in an apartment to find patterns in Pi that have some higher meaning, the computer constantly breaking, etc.

foodstances··on Ask HN: I miss Usenet. Are there any modern equivalents?
Nextdoor requires address verification and your real name on posts, and you are only talking to people within your block/neighborhood. There are still constant arguments and bad behavior on it. People are just not afraid to be assholes online or in person anymore...
foodstances··on Running Intel Binaries in Linux VMs with Rosetta
You're asking about something that was just released in a beta version of an OS announced a couple hours ago.
foodstances··on Show HN: Muse 2.0 with local-first sync
Users: I'm not paying for a subscription!

Those same users in a year: Where's the support for all these new features in the OS release just announced? Why haven't there been any free updates to this app I paid you 5 dollars for a year ago? This app sucks, I'm switching to something else. 1 star.

foodstances··on The new and upgraded Framework Laptop
They upgraded the hinges at some point during manufacturing to address the screen falling down during light movement:

https://frame.work/products/display-hinge-kit?v=FRANFB0001

I believe this upgraded lid assembly is to address the screen wobbling during typing. It's a very thin lid and has a lot of flex, so the tighter hinge just transfers the force into the lid, causing it to wobble. Hopefully this will be eliminated with this upgraded lid.

foodstances··on I'm all-in on server-side SQLite
Sure, but Apache, MIT, and GPL licenses don't require payment to the author either. That's why it's up to the company to decide to offer compensation without being required to, and why I'm curious which companies actually do it.

It's like when RedHat when public and offered pre-IPO stock to open source developers.

foodstances··on I'm all-in on server-side SQLite
That's great to hear, thank you!
foodstances··on I'm all-in on server-side SQLite
Just curious, is there any financial compensation/support going to Richard Hipp with all of this money changing hands?

When I see these startups making a business that is so heavily based on open-source software (like Tailscale on top of Wireguard), I have to wonder what these companies do to actually support the author(s) of the software that so much of their company is based on.
