fatfingerd··on Robots Are Already Killing People
> Get over yourself.

I consider ceasing to interpret my own survivor bias as skill instead of luck, getting over myself.

fatfingerd··on Florida man arrested after trying to cross Atlantic in hamster wheel vessel
In a very still environment, I would think steering would work by being off center, I can't imagine how he would go straight..
fatfingerd··on Robots Are Already Killing People
I think you should expect to die if you spend a lot of time on the road. Does it matter what bug the driver has that runs you down?
fatfingerd··on Robots Are Already Killing People
If humans were rational the human average would keep going up as anyone bellow average leaves it to robots, but instead it sounds like a lot of people with illusory superiority will keep hurting themselves..

fatfingerd··on Britain’s statisticians fix a blunder and find a bigger economy
Perhaps cumulatively, but in a particular moment? A infectious disease specialist may further raise GDP in this story, moments or years later.
fatfingerd··on Crowdfunding a defense for scientific research
I don't really know that her case against Harvard is that unreasonable. It's not like Harvard has never been caught prioritizing shielding its community over academic integrity, so why not this time?

But the leap to going after the independent researchers is just bizarre. Do we have an obligation to stop if an institution suddenly prioritizes integrity and we don't know why?

fatfingerd··on When tech says ‘no’
Call me a cynic, but I think a patent regurgitation machine will more likely have a successfully defended patent against the other AI makers than be shut down for the patent infringement it enables.
fatfingerd··on Home insurers cut natural disasters from policies as climate risks grow
I think few insurers can actually do any of that, let alone a new one when the question is larger calamities. They all have to buy from reinsurers which have a lower limit of what they would charge that may be considerably lower than what they are able to charge given how few reinsurers can play with large risks.

For the consumer insurer its more like looking at a commission and guessing whether it will go up again as other market participants decide what to do.

fatfingerd··on DSLs are a waste of time
The real issue here is a DSL without intention of enforcing limitations permanently.

A Regex, SQL, TLA, CSS and so on are all better DSLs than allowing a general purpose language because they are meant to restrict inputs of lower priority than other goals, where priorities are largely fixed.

A corporate DSL is meant to expand to whatever grandiose plans the company has for accepting impractical input from platinum customers.

fatfingerd··on ‘Colonialism’ Review: Empire Without Apology
https://hbr.org/2013/09/plantations-practiced-modern-managem...

Social Darwinism is a retroactive description of the colonial environment, not the religion that was used to tolerate it.

The religious model of racism is still very active today, I.e. see Louis Theroux visit with racists in South Africa.

There are race oriented people who want to divide things on race but are either inconsistent or their fears mean they understand that race does not limit capability and there are racist people who believe in inherent inferiority of races, the first tends toward social Darwinism the second to apply the justification "God gave us rule over the inherently more limited" to the "child" races. If you are standing in for a hellfire God where is the line on torture? If you are responsible for order delegated by God and can find normal human failings then you can run the plantation to your profit.

fatfingerd··on ‘Colonialism’ Review: Empire Without Apology
I think you have given Darwin a time machine. I would accuse the Protestant movement of developing both the abusive book maker model and the sciences as we know them today, but the sciences came much later.
fatfingerd··on Postgres Task Queues: The Secret Weapon Killing Specialized Queue Services?
If you use some other system, you still end up needing to track all of tasks and their progression in the database then identify all the ways they may have gone off track and update their state..
fatfingerd··on ReiserFS Officially Declared Obsolete
I think letting it rot on features was pretty much the easiest course to eventually remove it without anyone accidentally ending up in the middle of a Streisand effect while defending a renaming.

I really liked ReiserFS way back when but there are plenty of other FSes to choose from or choose to improve so there's little reason to deal with that baggage.

fatfingerd··on Google alleges DOJ antitrust head of ‘deep-seated bias’
Given that council wants to win a prosecutor needs to be proven competent and yet lose 2/3rds of the time to be a neutral one?
fatfingerd··on Paris says au revoir to rental e-scooters
I don't think they are nearly as bad as cars from a waste perspective, even if they are short lived, it takes quite a few of them to make one car worth of (e)trash.

If they weren't allowed on sidewalks and parked in (repurposed) car spaces I'd be fine with them.

fatfingerd··on Robinhood to buy back Bankman-Fried’s stake for $605M from U.S. government
AFAICT he pledged them to BlockFi to try to stop a margin call, and they went bankrupt, so its just a question of which bankruptcy claims they are for.
fatfingerd··on Hollywood studios have lost the strikes. Now it’s time to negotiate surrender
AFA streaming, I think people were already unhappy with content and unsubscribing at an accelerated pace because of financial fears.

It seems to me like they are going to collectively lower standards of what they are offering, like Disney, and hope that this means some people will paradoxically buy all of their services to get enough good content, but that risks having a small market of people who buy everything and everyone else disengaging like in the premium cable TV days.

fatfingerd··on The Last of the Fungus
Lots of correlations should exist with your chemical, and I don't see them, so if it floats it's a witch.
fatfingerd··on The Last of the Fungus

fatfingerd··on Lidl recalls popular Paw Patrol snacks over inappropriate message
Given that they cant just turn it off, it sounds like someone forgot to renew the domain.
fatfingerd··on Microsoft is unbundling Teams from Office in Europe to address regulator concern
Sure, I love standard wheel sizes since it prevents me from having to throw away the chair. I also like the integration in android to share/print/BT transmit with whichever chat app I have installed, though obviously all these apps should be replaced with google talk plus circles for teams.
fatfingerd··on Housing Is a Labor Issue: Land owners are taking all the wage gains
You want to pay more for less reliable service and have it used against adequate housing to ensure the service continues to decline?

A renter from a co-op, etc doesn't have to do anything for lower rent, more rights, options, etc, than another renter in the same city.

fatfingerd··on Housing Is a Labor Issue: Land owners are taking all the wage gains
Yes, a nonprofit group running/developing a housing area and renting to its members is much nicer than having to own at least a condo and then dealing with a bunch of bank/lawyer/realtor nonsense every time you want to move.
fatfingerd··on Amazon CEO reportedly told remote employees: It’s probably not going to work out
I think the WARN ACT would most likely apply if they terminate too many workers at once at one expected workplace, whether or not they think they have cause.

It's interesting that the WARN ACT is not well written for WFH developments, but I don't know that that matters given that Amazon is considering people to have mandatory locations.

fatfingerd··on Foxconn puts its empty buildings in Wisconsin up for sale
Looks like just another great tax deal. Give me a few million and I'm not sure I'll temporarily hold real estate but I will hire a schmuck to count it.
fatfingerd··on Loose lips save sunken ships
Is new mining of similar materials environmentally friendly?
fatfingerd··on For many home-schoolers, parents are no longer doing the teaching
I think your article is less likely to have the investigation beginning with the post office and more likely to have affects of multiple regular people not being OK with something, and being present.

Such involved parents could never let anything happen arguments ignore how these things develop as less involved parents cargo cult. (You can't get much more blatant in a drop in actual involvement than the example in the article.)

These kinds of groups connecting themselves to actual home schooling will erode it by association.

fatfingerd··on Ubus (OpenWrt micro bus architecture)
It seems to have some similarities to RouterOS' IPC and of course they have a similar role and environment. I'm curious if anyone who has looked into both of them in detail has any thoughts?

fatfingerd··on For many home-schoolers, parents are no longer doing the teaching
Private schools achieve that and have more ability to do so than homeschooling teacher as a service does.

This model isn't new and had problems before.

fatfingerd··on Marijuana, hallucinogen use, binge drinking at historic highs in U.S. 35-50Y
With a lot of high potency weed consumption you are going to get various psychosis and such at higher rates, sure the public health ramifications are better than for alcohol..

But this thread is celebrating marijuana use and binge drinking at all time highs in a demographic as a natural ramification of ending prohibition?

Naturally, one should hope that there is an explanation that means overall use is a better public health situation after the prohibition. I.e. increased alcohol use is among generations traumatized by prohibition and younger generations will choose better for themselves.
