> ReiserFS Officially Declared Obsolete

It was, at one time, the fastest linux filesystem.

I'm surprised it lasted this long or at the very least changed the name by now.

I think letting it rot on features was pretty much the easiest course to eventually remove it without anyone accidentally ending up in the middle of a Streisand effect while defending a renaming.

I really liked ReiserFS way back when but there are plenty of other FSes to choose from or choose to improve so there's little reason to deal with that baggage.

In the early 2000s I was so excited about Reiser4.

It was such a great filesystem at the time.

There is somewhere out there a synopsis of linux filesystems from quite a while ago that describes reiserfs as no longer being actively developed as its creator is "pursuing other interests".

Was he released from jail?

Still in prison:

edit: not scheduled for another parole hearing until August 2027

Reiser5 exists, it was announced a couple years ago. It's not dead, his partner Edward has been continuing filesystem research at IBM

Was there anything special about ReiserFS specifically vs other filesystems? I recall it had issues dealing with ReiserFS filesystem images.

The only filesystem to truly murder your data!

I recall someone added a 'murderers your wife' column on the Wikipedia filesystem comparison table at one stage.
