elsonrodriguez··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
Holy shit.
elsonrodriguez··on Bankruptcy judge rejects sale of Infowars to The Onion
Alex has not been abandoned. Tucker Carlson is a frequent guest on his show, and they toured together recently.

More to the point he has Roger Stone and Steve Bannon on the show constantly, who in turn have direct access to Trump.

Alex is firmly within the mainstream of the right wing.

elsonrodriguez··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
Picked up a used Bolt as well. Certified used with 7 years left on the battery warranty for about $15k.

Anyone who actually wants a cheap EV can buy a cheap EV.

There's just too many people that think they need a 3 row EV SUV with 500 miles of range, and that it should be under $35k.

Also the goal posts keep getting moved. Used to be people would say EVs will never take off until they hit $35k. Now that there are new EVs that can be had for that price, the new problem is that EVs will never take off unless they're $25k.

Meanwhile just about every EV sales graph shows an upward trajectory regardless of these "requirements".

JD Vance has proposed that people with children should get more voting power. That sort of pressure would disenfranchise women who elect to not have children, or unduly pressure women to have children.

Vance’s backer, Peter Thiel, has also previously implied that women being able to vote has weakened democracy.

It’s 2024 in America, and this is a joke indeed.

elsonrodriguez··on The Onion buys Infowars
Browsing their site I found an article that is making light of the suppression of women voters by using sexist tropes.

> Hundreds of thousands of women across America were left standing utterly clueless as to what to do at a voting booth after their husbands failed to tell them who to vote for.

> Voting at several polling stations ground to a halt after all of the booths became occupied by bewildered women. "This is a disaster," said poll worker John Bingham. "We've had thirty women taking up every booth for the past three hours, just staring like deer in headlights. We offered to bring them lunch while they made their choice, but they couldn't decide on a restaurant."

> At publishing time, voting stations had been forced to designate one voting booth for men only to allow voting to continue.

Given the history of women's right to vote, current laws causing women to needlessly die, and that many women today are undoubtedly being coerced by spouses to vote a certain way, calling this simply tone deaf would be extremely charitable. It is only truly funny if you have "women, am I right" as one of your shibboleths. Without that, it is clear misogyny.

All this to say I don't think a site promoting sexist views is a good alternative for a site that has made a master-class punchline out of trying to take a terrorist bigot off the air.

elsonrodriguez··on AI stole my job and my work, and the boss didn't know – or care
If you have tried to use a search engine to look anything up in the last few years you have seen AI generated articles that aimlessly meander for paragraphs without providing an actual answer to your question.

Those answers were previously (occasionally)contained within succinct articles written by someone who did some research or was an SME.

Maybe it was the case that content farms were degrading the ability for information to be found on the internet, but AI has basically dropped a nuke on search results.

It is a wasteland and nothing is alive there.

elsonrodriguez··on Self-driving Waymos secure final clearance for expansion beyond S.F
This might lead to a beneficial feedback loop for some traffic laws.
elsonrodriguez··on Stellarium Web Online Star Map
I’m sure even in the fictional worlds of Star Trek and Expanse there’s still someone in their back yard with a telescope, despite the skies being filled with not just satellites, but the constant traffic of space ships and the oppressive presence of megastructures.

elsonrodriguez··on Super Heavy has splashed down in The Gulf of Mexico
The Mars Direct plan is featured heavily in the book "The Case For Mars".

It's over 400 pages and contains some of the details you seem to be curious about.

elsonrodriguez··on Super Heavy has splashed down in The Gulf of Mexico
You can read up on Mars Direct for more info.

The gist of it is that the Saturn V has enough delta v to get to Mars, on the count of Mars having an atmosphere, which can be used for aerobraking.

Given the capability of reaching Mars with a Saturn V, the rest of the plan revolved around using Apollo hardware, with some modification, for both transport and habitats(re-use of empty stages featured prominently).

Ultimately even if we had hit some roadblock with martian soil or what have you, in an alternate timeline we could have at least sent uncrewed test flights to Mars and back.

elsonrodriguez··on Super Heavy has splashed down in The Gulf of Mexico
We will probably perform a human mission and return samples before a robot goes and picks up the Perseverance samples.

We’ve been mars-capable since Apollo. It’s a matter of will, which is a political function of cost, which is falling rapidly.

elsonrodriguez··on BYD unveils new hybrid tech as battle with gasoline rivals heats up
Electric motors and battery tech are definitely core competencies for Toyota.
elsonrodriguez··on The Lunacy of Artemis
If our world-wide herculean efforts towards building a self driving robotic car have yielded mediocre results, I have low expectations for a robotic field geologist built on a NASA budget.

Also note that even with the limitations, the humans surveyed more ground. Remove the limitation by making the rover a mobile habitat and now the humans can have an even more expansive and productive mission.

Ultimately we're going to colonize space, why take 50x the time to gather the science needed for that goal, when worst-case we can spend 50x the budget and just put humans there to incidentally also gather knowledge on how to live in space.

elsonrodriguez··on The Lunacy of Artemis
That is a further endorsement of human exploration.
elsonrodriguez··on The Lunacy of Artemis
We covered more ground in a lunar rover in a week than any of our mars rovers covered in a year.

elsonrodriguez··on Crypto Mixer Samourai Wallet's Co-Founders Arrested for Money Laundering
In the case of Wexit, Tamara Lich was a founder, and she buddied up with Pat King for the fundraiser, who is a self avowed white supremacist, like he's literally on twitter saying white people have the "strongest" bloodline.

If someone who is involved with multiple "Canada for Canadians" movements joins forces with a known racist, I would take the odds and bet good money that person is a racist.

elsonrodriguez··on Crypto Mixer Samourai Wallet's Co-Founders Arrested for Money Laundering
Ah, so there was a procedural issue in prosecuting the group with a cache of guns that wants to carve out a white nation out of Canada and the US. My mistake.

This doesn’t change the point that from the perspective of the Canadian government, they were facing 2 racist separatist groups at a time, and one of the groups was raising a LOT of cash while leading an occupation of the capital.

This is a valid scenario for seizing funds, though maybe the fact that groups like Diagalon and Wexit are a “meme” should be considered more closely.

elsonrodriguez··on Crypto Mixer Samourai Wallet's Co-Founders Arrested for Money Laundering
Bit of a tangent, but the fundraiser that the Canadian government froze was initially organized by a Canadian secessionist and a white nationalist, and during that protest (and possibly unrelated) weapons were seized at a border crossing from members of diagalon, a white nationalist group that wants to carve out parts of Canada and USA to make a “white” nation.

Unlike your other examples, that one is an example of using crypto for nefarious reasons.

I like the historical context, but there are extremely analogous comparisons for EVs, as electricity is widely available.
elsonrodriguez··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
A bus achieves what with some morality the profit other manufacturers seek via in-car purchases. GM, Rivian, and Tesla don’t want CarPlay for that reason.

A bus network would provide recurring revenue for the actual thing a vehicle is for, instead of DLC headlight patterns.

elsonrodriguez··on FAA says 737 MAX operator discovered loose bolts in rudder system in December
It is still an airframe that does not have the same redundancies required of new air frames.

It exists specifically to bypass those new requirements.

All else being equal, it will never be as safe as something designed to meet modern standards.

elsonrodriguez··on Spotted water hemlock: the most toxic plant in North America (2017)
This is the only way. It is a tautology, but a plant is only safe to eat if you know it is safe to eat and can identify it correctly.
elsonrodriguez··on Spotted water hemlock: the most toxic plant in North America (2017)
On the subject of smell, there are some people that can distinguish wild carrot from poison hemlock by smell alone.

In a controlled educational setting a sample of both was pass around a crowd of about 25 people at different times, and the instructor asked if anybody detected a strong smell in either sample.

I found the smell of poison hemlock terrible, a kind of chemical souring sensation in the back of the nose, as did one or two others in the group.

The instructor highlighted that the ratio of people sensitive was typically the same in every group, then moved on to another topic.

This might be true for water hemlock as well, but I'm not going out of my way to find out.

I still identify wild carrot visually, but always do a sniff test as a final check.

Who would fund solar power when it was so expensive and so inefficient?

Someone funded it, and subsidized it, and now solar panels are cheap and plentiful.

And that someone now owns the global market for solar panels.
