ds··on 1Password 8 has been formatting dates incorrectly for over a year
In the military, they force you to do dates as follows, which seems like the best idea to date.

01 JUN 2023

ds··on Stripe Launches PayPal Integration In Europe
Title should indicate that this is for EU only.

Stripe does not allow customers from the US to participate in this.

ds··on Banks with the highest risk of collapsing according to market data
You should also include marketcap / assets

If there are some banks out there valued at xxxx with only yyy in assets, thats good to know

ds··on For U.S. companies, the race for the new EV battery is on
I remember a few years ago reading a article that promised a liquid 'fuel' that would recharge batteries. The idea being that you would pull into a gas station and expel your uncharged liquid and refill with charged liquid.

The liquid stuff might be a pipe dream, but I think the goal should be for electric cars to have a 'instant' fill up option shortly. Having a network of such stations greatly aleviates issues of trying to squeeze every last watt hour out of every battery and lets range anxiety be less important. I dont really care as much if my car only gets 200 miles range if I can fill up in 2 minutes at any existing gas station.

Filling up of course can mean anything from the liquid fuel meme idea above to a fast battery-swap to some megawatt based 'super fast' charger. It really doesnt matter

ds··on American Airlines agrees to purchase Boom Supersonic Overture aircraft
Meaningless PR bullshit without knowing how much the down payment was.

Wouldnt be surprised if American put less than 1m down, which makes this nothing more than a slightly expensive PR campaign.

ds··on Framework Laptop Wins Two Design Awards
Framework laptop is certainly cool if you like to change out ports and want to repair your own laptop, but you are currently giving up quite a bit if you choose to get one:

* No AMD offerings, at all. The AMD 5900 processors have been available since EOY 2019 and dominate this 11 series processor on performance/battery life

* No dedicated GPU options, period.

* Even if you stay with intel, the processors are basically 2 revisions behind now.

* Form factor is quite a bit more bulky than its competitors, even considering the fact parts are removable.

* No guarantee of companies longevity for future bios updates / repair parts

* Price is quite a bit more expensive for what you get, compared to its competitors. For instance, This dell will be more powerful, slimmer and cost less ( https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-13-plus-lap...)

I love the reparability of the framework, but I just cant get around the drawbacks if you choose to go with them. Its not even a issue of money. You cant pay more to match features of other 'non repairable' laptops. You just have to accept a inferior product compared to other options.

ds··on I accidentally loaned all my money to the US government
Quick question for HN people: Is there a instrument like a I bond that doesnt have a 10k limit?
ds··on Listerine Mouthwash Royalties
It a 5.5% cap with nothing backing it. Il take any random real estate deal (which has tons of tax benefits) over this any day of the week, plenty of which exist at the same cap or higher and come with actual assets (land, building, etc..)

Dont get me wrong, Listerine is definitely as strong a brand as there is (I cant even name a competitor off the top of my head) so im not that worried about this going to zero, but that said I would still expect a cap of ~8-10% to have this make sense over other options backed by assets.

ds··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
Im familiar with energy markets. Im also familiar with the fact that any serious seller or buyer of energy locks in yearly pricing contracts and is unaffected by these swings. Any serious datacenter or industrial buyer is not relying on spot pricing. These energy markets also dont exist in every state.
ds··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
I would need to see the math, because nothing adds up to even 1/10th of their claimed revenue. Best case, they bought 10mwh on jan 5th and sold it at the perfect time on jan 11th. This would give them 2k in revenue in 6 days.

Wheres the rest? And what about if you cant nostradamus predict the best times to buy and sell?

ds··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
Can someone explain their revenue to me?

They claim 1m in revenue from their existing product which is: "1.75 megawatts (MW) of peak power output; a 2.2 MW charge rating; and 10+ megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage capacity"

How does that equal 1m in revenue? You have to pay to charge your air-battery during low-cost hours and then discharge it during high cost hours to make the difference in revenue.

The issue is, you can buy 2 megawatts of power 24/7 at average datacenter energy pricing (~5c/kwh) for $2400/day or 876k/year. Who is paying more than that for less energy and only at certain hours?

Is there some energy company somewhere that sells power during the day at like 50c/kwh and 1c/kwh at night???

ds··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
One thing thats really strange is duckduckgo is getting a boost of traffic from antivax people. Go on twitter and most every post is antivaxers/conspiracy people encouraging users to try DDG vs google because DDG doesn't suppress some random posts.

ds··on The state of external retina displays
If you care about HDR, ironically enough there are only 4 options for a decent monitor as well- And almost all of them are nearly impossible to buy new. Some of these monitors are also years old https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCcSK3R8HcM

ds··on “Click to subscribe, call to cancel” is illegal, FTC says
No. You cant do anything to someones credit unless you have their SSN. Damn good thing thats the case also, if you happen to be named Jane Doe or Bob Smith.
ds··on “Click to subscribe, call to cancel” is illegal, FTC says
You cant ding a credit rating unless you have a users SSN, which the NYT almost certainly does not.
ds··on China declares cryptocurrency deals ‘illegal’
Its not about that. If its not easy or possible to exchange BTC for goods or fiat, it becomes a novelty. You can never kill crypto, but you can certainly make it so that it becomes like beanie babies or tulips, where only a minority of people feel it has any value in the current day.

Bottom of the line is always going to be if you can exchange crypto for goods. If most people feel that the crypto is worthless, the value will plunge and the buyer pool will as well.

ds··on ProtonMail logged IP address of French activist after order by Swiss authorities
From their blog post:

"Under no circumstances can our encryption be bypassed, meaning emails, attachments, calendars, files, etc. cannot be compromised by legal orders."

I hate this type of grandstanding. If the swiss authorities make a legal order demanding that protonmail include a rogue JS file when a specific IP address requests their inbox, they will have to do it. It reminds me of XKCD #538, All this advanced tech to make it so everyone trusts their email is encrypted no-matter-what and it all falls apart with one subpoena.

Oh, and apparently (According to this blog post) they 'wouldnt be able to fight or appeal' that type of order either. This is basically how PRISM was implemented back in the day, The NSA mandated various providers comply with code changes.

ds··on Linux on the Framework Laptop
Id love to get one, but I need a dGPU. Any shot they will add one? Something low end like a 1650-Ti or a 3050 would be perfect

ds··on Ray Ozzie's latest venture is a cheap IoT board with flat rate connectivity
I know you guys likely want to focus on being the shovel vs the gold miner, but if you were to setup a ready-to-go tracking package, You would easily take over the entire market.

The amount that insurance companies pay for services to track leased-cars, Shipping carriers wanting to track high value items, etc.. Its a massive market- and all of them are paying 3-5$/month per tracker.

You should consider making a white labeled tracker 'company' you own in house. You could charge easily, 4-5x more than you do for the product. Its also the most obvious use case for your product. You would kill it.

ds··on Ray Ozzie's latest venture is a cheap IoT board with flat rate connectivity
In a modified configuration, this will completely eat the gps tracker market. The pricing is insane. Normally if you want to track something like a car, you have to get a little tracking device (Which to be fair can be had from alibaba for ~$15) and put a sim in it at a minimum of $10/month.

Getting a ping every 10 minutes with location is more than ample for most things. I suppose you could also give it a request to turn on minute-based updates as well if need be.

ds··on Amazon has ruined search and Google is in on it
Affiliate links arent the problem per-se. Shitty content is. Google is supposed to penalize sites like this with lousy, thin reviews and promote things like wirecutter and whatnot.

I much prefer affiliate links to the alternative: Unblockable ads and paywalls.

ds··on Google launches new vulnerability reward platform
There must be something I am missing, because I dont understand how underpaid most bug bounty programs are.

If I ran Googles program, I would immediately 10x all payments, unironically. Yes, that means paying 1 million bucks for something you previously paid 100k for. Drop in the bucket. You also get a ton more eyeballs on you, letting you patch everything ASAP.

But they dont do this. I dont know why. Security through obscurity? I suppose that works if you are myspace.com in 2021. Nobody likely gives a shit to try and hack it, but at the end of the day this is still google so that really doesn't apply.

The downside of not paying handsomely is people realize they can make more money selling to third party vendors, (which some do) then every once in a while you get a bad PR story showing that your stuff was hacked and exploited for months/years and it potentially knocks a few points off your stock price.

Money is really the end all be all. If you pay more than third party vendors, I can see almost no reason people would sell to them. At that point, your only adversary's are gov employees of nation states and the staff of companies dedicated to finding vulnerabilities.

ds··on Valve Steam Deck
Im not sure how apples to oranges it is, but a GTX 980 (Released in 2014) has 5 TFlops. Genuinely curious how powerful this might be for GPU intensive games. (Call of Duty, Rust, etc..)

Maybe this is equivalent to something like a MX-150 or GTX1050?

Should be totally fine for Valves games though (CSGO, TF2, Etc..)

ds··on New LinkedIn Data Leak Leaves 700M Users Exposed
Sucks, but heres why no google support:

From the redact.dev FAQ page:

Why don't you support anything made by Google or Apple? At this time, we are reliant on both Google and Apple to be listed in their respective app stores. As such, we have been advised that in order to remain in good standing we should not offer support for these services.

ds··on Show HN: Redact – Automated deletion for your content on social networks
I actually spoke with one of the people at HN and suggested they implement a feature which lets you disassociate a post or comment from the author. I think this is very similar to how reddit handles it when you delete an account. All the posts/comments stay in place, but the author name of each item changes from "Bobsmith33" to "deleted user" - Seems like a great compromise for HN. Good (and bad) content remains, but the association factor is removed.
ds··on Show HN: Redact – Automated deletion for your content on social networks
All that is in the FAQ- We are going to charge for upsells in the future mobile app
ds··on Show HN: Redact – Automated deletion for your content on social networks
We did, Im just not sure how to show our support for the EFF without it being misconstrued. A tiny link in the footer does very little to drive traffic to the EFF, which was the goal of the prominent position. Without donations EFF doesnt exist and thats bad news for all privacy startups.
